Arc Id's

hello thanks for completing the last task! the spreadsheet with the new ARC ID's is located here

  • most of these files currently on Commons are low-res, I've included a high res zip file partial url - don't know if converting from low-res to hi-res is a separate task or not
  • Please add ARC ID into title as in - File:this is the title (12345).jpg
  • need the source parameter similar to last task: Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library: H0010-2.
  • Like in the original NARA version of the template, the Arc ID # needs to be a link, however using the new language: This media is from the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum [hyperlink to Ford Website], a part of the National Archives and Records Administration [hyperlink to Archives.gov]. It can be accessed online through the Archival Research Catalog (ARC) at identifier xyz [hyperlink to ARC url].
  • Got invited to speak at at the 2013 Assoc. of Midwest Museum Conference (Unintended Consequences, or It Takes a Village to Create a Wikimedia Project) hope to get permission. Also hope to bring Villager #2 (WiR) along to talk, too. You, as Villager # 1, are invited as well (I'm Villager #0). If you see fireworks above Michigan, the email request has been opened. Bdcousineau (talk) 18:20, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
I'll do this this week. Though I've gotten a number of invites, I don't do conferences/w:unconferences/meetups related to the wiki...sorry. I intend to stay as just some guy on the 'net. Smallman12q (talk) 00:25, 9 March 2013 (UTC)
no worries! I'm looking for more ways to add value to my presence here, and it may actually be there, in the rl world. The Ford WiR model is doable on any campus - I have a date with a curator at UofM nxt week about this very idea. There's a database, too. Any interest in peonies? =) Bdcousineau (talk) 00:56, 9 March 2013 (UTC)
Sure. Why not.Smallman12q (talk) 12:56, 10 March 2013 (UTC)

hmmm... crap! I can't see that the template has changed on this group. Am I looking in the correct place? I do see that the hi-res image has been uploaded - thanks! Bdcousineau (talk) 16:25, 28 March 2013 (UTC)
It appears properly for some files such as File:Gerald Ford Papers- Final Issues for Decision, Army Corps of Engineers- Panama Canal Treaty Negotiations (5)(Gerald Ford Library)(6283043).pdf where it reads: "This media is from the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum, a part of the National Archives and Records Administration. It can be accessed online through the Archival Research Catalog (ARC) at identifier 6283043." I'll have to see what's wrong with the other ones tmrw. Smallman12q (talk) 02:43, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
It seems the ones using {{GFPLM-image-ARC}} are fine. You can see a list at Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:GFPLM-image-ARC. If that's not what you want, let me know. (I'll work out why others don't match up tmrw).Smallman12q (talk) 02:46, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
ok, great, thanks. It's the group of files that recently got ARC IDs assigned/that I uploaded that seem to be missing the full correct templating. The template is correct in everything Smallbot uploaded, and everything NARAbot uploaded. Perhaps there's something wonky in the "Upload Wizard" which is what I used. Today is Ford Working Group meeting, but if DPLA is everything I'm dreaming it is, it might be the last! The Smithsonian has also joined DPLA. Curious to know what the licensing will be. The Dev portal might be useful. Later, 'gator! Bdcousineau (talk) 10:50, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
Could you list a few of the files that don't work? They need to be using {{GFPLM-image-full}}. I've looked at the various links at DPLA technical aspects. The Metadata Application Profile, you linked to is helpful...though it doesn't specify how the "source resource" itself is defined. They're using w:Resource Description Framework[1] which is good. There is some basic api functionality, but it's still being ironed out. There is a mailing list [2] so I'll give that a shot. Ideally, I'd like a sample: here's a link to the NARA image source resource itself and here's it's accompanying metadata. Still have to manually update those files from that excel sheet.Smallman12q (talk) 22:42, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
Will have time on Sunday to "list a few of the files that don't work"; hope the slow response is ok. Are there tasks that can be offloaded this direction? The Ford Working Group is no longer stalling, and are strongly considering the Daily Diary upload. Whatever happens first, DPLA or Ford db's.
That link ("here's a link to the NARA image source resource itself and here's it's accompanying metadata") is what I imagine too - fingers crossed, right? Is there a way to use grant $$ here? does Smallbot need more power/whatever? It's never entered my mind to do this for $$ - it's more like this is the fun and right thing to do. Bdcousineau (talk) 23:59, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
That's certainly the FOSS approach. Costs for hosting smallbot are negligible...and its developer is mostly just waiting=P. Could you clarify " Are there tasks that can be offloaded this direction?"? Cheers.Smallman12q (talk) 01:34, 30 March 2013 (UTC)

I dunno, it was an offer to do whatever that might help in the "Still have to manually update those files from that excel sheet" from above. Waiting here too, is there any value in approaching the dev's at the DPLA and asking directly for a few sample data strands to see what the download might entail? There's about 30k NARA files to begin with - is this too many? to few? And really, perhaps I'm only fantasizing this - are you in? it turns out that Michael has been playing in the NARAdata for years, so he is. May be too lazy to work on "list a few of the files that don't work" - chapter narrative more urgent. Made a nice circle recently - read the Hacker Maifesto → to the Community Memory article →search for location → a block away last wkend (and prolly never again!) →snapped image →uploaded to Commons → into Community Memory article. As for today, why choose w:Peeps when there is an abundance of yummy chocolate around? Bdcousineau (talk) 13:36, 31 March 2013 (UTC)

I'm still in=) and yes a sample is always beneficial. Hope you had a good Easter (if you celebrate that sort of thing). And happy April Fools=D. You can see wiki's april fools on the front page at w:Main Page (it's a big ?). I'm 3/4 of the way through the The Boy Kings and its a surprisingly good read. As an English major, her technical nativity is evident, but the writing style is good and she offers a genuine reflection of her experiences at what was essentially a frat with engineers=P. I'll create an article this week. Since you're getting more involved, you may be interested The Digital Divide (which is a good primer) and The Truth According To Wikipedia by w:VPRO which summarizes the various views. Cheers.Smallman12q (talk) 23:59, 1 April 2013 (UTC)
