dito bei Image:1917178-Travel Picture-The Gambia.jpg image:2521398-Serrekunda-The Gambia.jpg
und bei Image:2521491-Local Customs-The Gambia.jpg Image:1915316-tailor in Banjul-The Gambia.jpg

--::Slomox:: >< 15:06, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

SVG maps

Hello. Thank you very much for uploading such wonderful SVG maps of African countries. Hope you will upload also such maps for countries of other continents. Very appreciated. Bis bald. - Darwinek 19:30, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks. But I am sorry, that's all I have. I found the geospatial data on the Uganda Bureau of Statistics website and created those maps of it. But they had only data on African countries. If I had data on other countries, creating maps would be no problem (it's just a bit formatting the data). So, if you know a source... --::Slomox:: >< 00:18, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

I am making flag-maps from your svg outlines, see [1] and [2] for example. I would like to create such flag-maps for the rest of the world + for some subnational divisions like the U.S. states. I do not know how such geospatial data should look like, but I found some websites which should have them: Australia and USA-1, USA-2, hope some data for Australian territories/states and the U.S. states can be found there. Please, take a look if you can find desired data there. Very appreciated. Thank you. - Darwinek 21:52, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

What I need are the coordinates of all the points which make up the outline of the country when connected. I had a look on the pages, but did not find the needed data. But it was only a quick look, cause I have not much time to thoroughly look at it. If you could provide a direct link to such data, I could make the maps. --::Slomox:: >< 00:50, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
For the US there are many SVG maps around on Commons. Should be no problem. And for Australia too. --::Slomox:: >< 01:00, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
Okay, I have created all the maps for Australia and its states. Please be aware, that the quality is less than for the African countries. The data in the source text of the SVG does not correspond to the coordinates (only relevant for re-use). For Northern Territory and New South Wales there were no maps of the Local Government Areas, so I had to take the data from Image:AUS_locator_map.svg. This two images are of lesser quality. --::Slomox:: >< 02:27, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks again. I will try to find precise data you demand, maybe I will also write e-mails to proper institutions. If such detailed data for Africa are available, then it could be surely obtained also for the rest of the world. Is there any exact technical name for the dataset you need? - Darwinek 22:50, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

I actually have to admit: I have no idea, whether there is a special technical name for it ;-) Please be aware: I am no expert in any way for anything geo-related. I actually do nothing else than using a text editor and the replace function to re-format the data so it can be rendered as SVG. There's not much knowledge or magic involved ;-) --::Slomox:: >< 19:13, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

OK. I've found something, data for the U.S., Canada and North America. Please take a look at it, hope it will work. All data are free, including Canadian ones.

Thank you very much. - Darwinek 20:09, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

Hello, I think you uploaded the original of this file. The author status isn't completed. Were you the author, and if so could you complete the field? I have made some derivative maps based on this, but can't upload them because the author of the original is not shown.Meddlin' Pedant 22:25, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

User:F l a n k e r is the author of the original Image:Regione Abruzzo.svg and User:Helix84 created maps for the other Italian regions based on Image:Regione Abruzzo.svg. I just completed the collection with the blank map. --::Slomox:: >< 00:45, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

--Dschwen (talk) 12:22, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

--Dschwen ( ) 17:26, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
Ok, lass mich mal nen Vorschlag machen.
--Dschwen (talk) 17:49, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

Please, see my note on MediaWiki talk:Signature#Talk link localisation (and my change of MediaWiki:Common.js). Thanks --Mormegil (talk) 20:41, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for notifying, but I am not the uploader. I have only checked, whether the licence on Flickr matched the licence on the image description page (and it did). I can not help in investigating the original author. I guess, even the Flickr user who made that image can not. Do you really think, there is any chance, that the painter of a mandala on a Bangkok temple wall (or wherever they place mandalas in Thailand, I have no idea...) will sue the Wikimedia foundation on copyright infringement? He most likely will be happy and proud that his piece of religious work will be shown to so many people in countries far, far away. Maybe this mandala is even PD-old, who knows? The question for the original author may be formally correct, but if we go for common sense, I very much doubt, that we should delete this image. --Slomox (talk) 19:59, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

Hello Slomox,

  • Do you have any idea why this picture was uploaded on Commons ? Is it uploaded randomly by the Flickrlicker robot, without purpose ?
  • If we have no idea what this picture actually depicts, does it pass COM:SCOPE ? In particular "Must be realistically useful for an educational purpose" ? Can a teacher teach pupills by saying "Well, this is from Bangkok, but don't ask me what it is" ? Teofilo (talk) 20:45, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
  • Commons:Licensing says "The following restrictions must not apply to the image or other media file: Use by Wikimedia only (...)" : this means that any kind of people may use the picture, including for commercial use. Would a bouddhist painter from Bangkok appreciate that his painting is used as a pattern on mugs or throw-away paper plates ? Teofilo (talk) 21:11, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
We don't know exactly what it is, but according to my personal assessment 99 % of all pictures uploaded to Commons have a description that is clearly improvable. We at least know, that it is a mandala from Bangkok. That's not much, but enough to be able to use it in some contexts in a meaningful way.
Well, I don't know much about the mentality of Eastern Asian Buddhist religious artists (I don't even know, whether this kind of art is regarded art in Thailand, maybe they regard it as craft without any special level of creativity, I don't know exactly), but if I try to put myself in the mindset of the creator, I wouldn't mind about throw-away paper plates. I don't think, that fits the Buddhist mentality. I guess, they are more like: weirdo westerners... But if they want to, let them do whatever they like. Perhaps I'm completely wrong, I don't know. But I'm positive, I'm not completely wrong ;-)
Well, the rules ask for the authors of 2D artworks in images being known, so if you want to carry forward the deletion process, there is few I can do about it. But my advice is: if it is unlikely that anybody will sue us ever and if the image is hosted on Commons since three years ... just leave the image untouched. It won't hurt anybody --Slomox (talk) 22:28, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

Please

Hello. I'm the author of Image:Chromium zhwiki.png. Could you help delete the first version of the image? I have updated it by uploading the second version. The first version is not used any more. Thank you in advance.--百楽兎 (talk) 04:24, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

There's no need to delete old versions. It's completely normal, that old, unused versions are kept in the version history. Old versions are only deleted if there are special reasons like privacy or copyright concerns. --Slomox (talk) 04:29, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
I got it. It indeed contains some privacy of mine. So please help delete for me. Thank you. --百楽兎 (talk) 04:33, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
Okay, now I see the difference. I have no idea, what the Chinese signs are saying ;-) but it seems to be okay. --Slomox (talk) 04:40, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
