galleries

You should have a go at sorting the QI Promoted images and see what has happened there recently. Commons:Quality_images/Recently promoted I enable javascript to use it and interestingly enough, whether my feelings about javascript and wiki are accurate or not, it was the author of that gallery maker that discouraged me from leaving it enabled.

Also, as I have been going through the plant categories, it would be very nice if a VI image exists for that category that it be pasted somehow with the navigation stuff I have been working with. -- carol (talk) 23:04, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

You made me curious, so I went there. Indeed a very nice and handy tool, but the QIs there were already sorted, so there was no work for me there ;-)
Could you direct me to a good place to read about the taxonav templates? My immediate thought is that I dislike taxonavigation templates as the infrmation that needs to be maintained in them seems to be completely redundant work to the taxo templates used at Wikispecies. Of course it is nice when they are there, but the Wikispecies, en taxonavigation will always be out of sync with the commons taxonavigation because you will be maintaining redundant information independently (uless a bot helps you to synchronize the different Wikimedia projects). Speaking of Wikispecies (an without having seen your taxonav template work), the only reasonable way to make taxonavigation templates IMO is by using the Wikispecies scheme (preferably with a nicer formatiing), where each template for a lower taxa transcludes the template for a higher taxa. In that manner you truly avoid redundant information. Still problematic with renames though, as the template name should really correlate one-to-one with the names used in the template implementation. The same goes for the list of vernacular names, these should really be templated to a {{VN}} template. -- Slaunger (talk) 23:19, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Hokusai

It's basically a high-quality restoration, but it does involve remaking the woodblock. Very highly trained engravers can reproduce such things exactly, and this was made as part of that tradition. It's kind of like the die for a coin being remade when the first wears out. Adam Cuerden (talk) 21:30, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

Gallery depreciation

Hi Slaunger. When I see so many galleries that are destroyed, it makes me sad. Although I find categories of primary structural importance, galleries have a primary presentation role. So I am wondering how to restore the perception of galleries and a message that even small galleries have to grow (and need time). I am not overkeen on contests-like actions, but maybe we can find and publish some fine examples such as William Lyon Mackenzie King visual chronology, Brugge, Köln ... (thanks for your nice comments on my rfa). --Foroa (talk) 09:37, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi Foroa,
Thank you for your message. I share your feeling of sadness concerning the depreciation of galleries. For me the most important aspect of media on Commons is that they are properly organized, which many interprete as always categorized. However, it is not a battle I want to channel my energy into. I feel it would be like Don Quijote fighting the wind mills. It would drain me, my enthusiasm for the project would cease. Instead I will try to follow the consensus reached by the majority of users, although I feel it is not the right path.
I see your RfA is going well, which pleases me.
Cheers, -- Slaunger (talk) 10:07, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

Commons Scope - Pdf and Djvu files

I have added some text dealing with these based on the discussion on the talk page. Users are by no means unanimous about which files should be allowed, and I have tried to follow the majority opinion. Thus, the suggestion is that if a Pdf or Djvu file is educationally useful even to a single other Wiki it should be kept. Would you like to comment before this page goes live? Please do so at the bottom of the talk page. Regards, --MichaelMaggs (talk) 22:00, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

I have just returned from vacation and have seen your question. I have replied on my talk page. --MichaelMaggs (talk) 21:46, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
