Parish maps[edit]

Hi. I saw your two map files File:Carmarthenshire parishes.jpg and File:South wales parish map.jpg. You uploaded these as "own work" - you created them yourself from scratch, rather than scanning from some original source? -mattbuck (Talk) 16:21, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The surviving one I did and its notes have now been modified to make that clearer. The deleted map was a portion of an image from GENUKI Parish Maps - here is the link if you are interested - it was described in error, thought I was taking responsibility for any copyright issues by claiming it was my own work. I'm new ;) Sirjohnperrot (talk) 12:51, 14 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
File:My Perrott Family Data-52.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Portreeve of Laugharne Image Deletion Request[edit]

"Significant risk of copyright violation, uploader may not be the original photographer. Published elsewhere before upload here. The file name matches https://www.wikitree.com/photo/jpg/My_Perrott_Family_Data-52 where it is declared as 'Copyright free fair use', but unclear whether the Wikitree uploader is the photographer. Crop of an image at http://www.oocities.org/laugharne63/history.html. No camera metadata. Small file, possibly a scan. Has the appearance of an old photograph."

It is a scan of a photograph taken by a currently unknown family member (in 1989 according to a note on the reverse) and was uploaded onto my wife's wikitree profile when first created in 2018. Presumably the information there gave rise to your suspicions of a significant risk of copyright violation in the light of its earlier appearance on the GeoCities site, taken down in 2009. It would be helpful to establish if you know that the copyright notice by "Laurence Durbridge" (as updated from 2000 to today's date) applies to the images in his article. We've not come across this name before but he may have an association with our relative. Certainly the well written summary of the History of Laugharne, dating presumably from between 1994-2009, suggests a link to another individual, now deceased. If possible we'd like to get in touch with Laurence about his use of the photograph and other matters including the origin of the 1973 image of Laugharne Castle. After your researches, can you help us with this at all? Sirjohnperrot (talk) 11:00, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

my response on User talk:VerbcatcherSirjohnperrot (talk) 11:30, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, you should respond to the deletion request on the deletion request page. If you repeatedly upload copyright violations then you may be blocked from contributing; this is less likely if you are seen to engage with the process. Regards, Verbcatcher (talk) 12:34, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
With respect, I have engaged in good faith with the process and certainly haven't repeatedly uploaded images knowingly violating their copyright restrictions. Instead I have engaged positively with you throughout in order to better understand Wikipedia's requirements. . 13:13, 21 June 2020 (UTC)Sirjohnperrot (talk)
I wasn't meaning to threaten you but was trying to guide you through the processes here. An administrator will review the deletion request and may look no further than the nomination page. I'm not an administrator. Verbcatcher (talk) 13:51, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Island House, Laugharne postcard.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Please do me the courtesy of answering my request for you to identify this image properly - without referencing unspecific (though no doubt helpful to many) tutorials. To repeat - I am not aware of uploading the image you reference which does not exist in any of my wikipedia content currently online. The earlier reference from this page copied below is 4 years old and my error was corrected at the time:Parish maps[edit] but refers to a different image with the same title

Just coming across this discussion (I wasn’t aware of the reply; you can use {{Ping}} to let me know I need to respond).
The file I nominated for deletion was not the one on the Genuki page (i.e. the Kain/Oliver source). Those maps consist of old-style OS maps superimposed with red borders for the parish boundaries.
The image deleted was a crop from the Phillimore atlas, which consists of a smaller-scale map of parishes in black outline, with the names and dates of earliest surviving parish register superimposed. There is a red border around the coast which signifies (I think) the border of the St David’s diocese.
You may be able to access the Phillimore image here through this Ancestry sharing link.
Whether the image was of the Kain/Oliver source or the Phillimore source, they are both copyrighted so wouldn’t be admissible on Commons without explicit permission given by the copyright holders.
I don’t think this image was used on Wikipedia, but Wikimedia Commons hosts millions of images that have never been used on a Wikipedia page; they are separate (but linked) projects.
Hope this helps. Dogfennydd (talk) 18:33, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
