Caption contest VP[edit]

When you post about the caption contest on VP, I think you should include a thumbnail of the new image. That might grab people's attention more than the one line of text. Just a random though! BMacZero (talk) 20:01, 14 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Kern Test (PNG reference image).png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Autopatrol given[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. Jianhui67 talkcontribs 03:09, 12 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion nominations[edit]

Please stop nominating pictures for deletion until everything is settled. It is not obvious that the pictures needs to be deleted. If the WMF lawyers agree that the images should be deleted it will be better to do so for them all after that. For now you are just creating a lot of discussions in a lot of different places concerning the same issue. --Averater (talk) 10:18, 9 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I will not nominate any more image, but I'm not retracting the ones already nominated, unless you feel strongly otherwise, ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 10:20, 9 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I did make a comment (voting keep for now) on each so I don't think that any retractions are necessary. There might be a lot of deletions soon but lets not get ahead of anything just yet. --Averater (talk) 10:25, 9 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Technically, the nominations are "procedural", and I am prepared to conceede they may be seen as forcing an undecided issue. Personally I'm "disappointed" that an "artists-rights" body is behaving in the way it is. Perhaps Sewdish Wikimedians need to send a strong message (by approriate means) that trying to restrict FoP is going to actually hurt most artists as opposed to protecting a few of those more able to assert their rights? I will note Pirate Party was rather active in Sweden, and this is exactly the sort of issue they would campaign on. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 10:36, 9 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
There has been a lot of talk on the Swedish Wikipedia and offline regarding this and to delete all images is certainly one option that has been debated. But since the images would be allowable 70 years after the creator is dead the images could be recreated then if they are tagged appropriately the deletions should be made with some care. There is already such a system here for other copyrighted work of art that can be restored some day. The main recommendation I have heard so far is to keep calm until some professional lawyers have had time to look into this mess. There is also probably a few months until the court verdict actually is made and also some more chances to change the verdict (though those chances are very small). --Averater (talk) 15:52, 9 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
PS we are a lot of Wikipedians who agree with you on the disappointment of the situation. --Averater (talk) 15:55, 9 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
User:ShakespeareFan00/OS Maps has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this user page, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

A cup of coffee for you![edit]

Thanks for doing copyright patrol at Commons:Deletion requests/File:The Golden Hamster Manual.djvu. In this case, your identification of a problem led to me getting support that I needed when otherwise I would not have known what to do.

Thanks for doing patrol in general, and thanks for doing it with insight in my case. I am grateful. Blue Rasberry (talk) 15:13, 14 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Not certain why I find out in January ...[edit]

Not certain why I find out in January about a file that you nominated for deletion in November, and was deleted in that month. For goodness sake, if you are going to nominate files, please give direction that if the decision is delete, that the closing admin apply {{PD-US-1923-abroad-delete}} to the file if they are not going to move it themself. I truly have enough to do without having to regularly sort out these messes as no one apparently has the wits or the knowledge to know better, and the Coomons admins cannot see or care beyond the end of their deletion fingers.  — billinghurst sDrewth 10:21, 16 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Duly noted, Which was the work of concern you only became aware about recently? I ask because I'm sure I'd raised the issue of works with the status you mention at Wikisource Copyright Discussions jointly. However, you've mannaged to convince me that it's pointless trying to assume common sense with people at Commons at times. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 10:30, 16 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
What I find more suprising is that in relation to Twelve Men of Bengal, I explicitly indicated it could be localised to enWS in the deletion discussion. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 10:35, 16 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Road signs deletions[edit]

Hi. I can't understand your requiry of mass deletion of all British road signs... can you kindly explain in basical word your reason? Thanks. --Gigillo83 (talk) 11:58, 22 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Deletions[edit]

I strongly suggest you stop nominating files for deletion that quite obviously are covered by {{OGL}}. This is just creating a load of unnecessary work and some poor sod has to clear it all up at some stage. I suggest you also address the objections raised in the first few nominations because that will affect all subsequent ones. Rodhullandemu (talk) 12:00, 22 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

OGL doesn't explicitly state it covers the design rights. I strongly agree with you that these should in all sanity be {{OGL}}, but as stated these were nominated on a precautionary principle, until there was an outright official and explict confirmation. You are welcome to contact the Department for Transport directly to get that clarification/confirmation. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 12:03, 22 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
"Design right" applies to three-dimensional objects. It does not apply to 2D designs, which these road signs are. Try looking at section 213 of the CDPA 1988. Rodhullandemu (talk) 12:17, 22 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You should definitely mention that in the DR's, BTW ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 12:20, 22 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
And you didn't investigate what "design right" actually means before wasting everyone's time? Rodhullandemu (talk) 12:22, 22 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not going to respond to that, other than to thank you for clearing up an apparent misunderstanding. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 12:24, 22 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Please STOP with these, unless you seriously believe the files should be deleted. A desire to have the permission in triplicate doesn't mean the file is unacceptable. The precautionary principle doesn't mean we need OTRS for everything and we can apply a degree of common sense. We don't need OTRS for every photograph taken by a US government employee, to confirm that yes, that specific photo was taken as part of the person's official duties. While its possible that a photo taken during the Apollo 11 was a "personal" photo, we don't need to ask NASA to confirm that's not true. I think its only you who has significant doubt on these files. IMO typographical copyright is the most pertinent here, and that expires after 25 years; and when the font itself is PD there is no effective restriction.e --Nilfanion (talk) 12:26, 22 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I appreciate your deletion nominations are in good faith, but you appear to be nominating thousands of files for removal in what appears to be a unilateral action. I very much feel that there should be a central discussion somewhere appropriate - the deletion reasoning goes against established Commons policies, and it needs a wider conversation across the community. It's impossible for editors to respond on an individual basis for all your deletion requests. I'm not sure where to suggest, but do please go and have a conversation. Thanks. Noted, the concern has been expressed by others. I'm in the process of seeking clarifications with certain parties off wiki.ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 13:22, 22 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks - but on-wiki clarification would also be the way forward. Cnbrb (talk) 13:37, 22 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

A cup of tea for you![edit]

I've fulfilled your block request, though I didn't care for it much. I like to block socks and spammers, not good long-term contributors. I hope you'll decide to stick around. Your request shows that you care about Commons, and that counts for a lot to me and many others. I'm glad you're taking time to think about this decision rather than just retiring. You can request unblock at any time, and myself or another admin will do so right away. Take care. Daphne Lantier 18:53, 22 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Daphne Lantier: and having requested a wiki-break on my User page, certain other issues have arisen that need me to adequately respond elsewhere. So this is effectively a cancellation request on the previous request at my user page. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 19:01, 22 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I hope that means you wanted the block removed, 'cause that's what I've done. Daphne Lantier 19:04, 22 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Daphne Lantier: thanks... I'd also appreciate an uninvolved party contributing to the discussion noted above and here [[1]] ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 19:06, 22 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know anything about the subject, so I'll leave that one alone. There are thousands of blatant copyvios on Commons, and I would prefer to see those tagged for deletion. That's what I focus my time on. They never stop rolling in! Daphne Lantier 19:20, 22 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
