Diagram Cleanup[edit]

Thanks for your kind remarks about the map of the naval battle. What exactly needed cleaning up, and how do you do it? The actual drawing was done in FreeHand (v8); I only used Inkscape to convert it to SVG (via PDF). Odysseus1479 (talk) 20:10, 17 October 2010 (UTC)
- Ah, I just reimported it into Inkscape, checked that the text was paths, and then re-saved it as a Plain SVG. That strips out Inkscape-specific tags, making the file smaller and "W3C compliant". Doesn't change the image in the slightest - just the background code Serenthia 21:56, 17 October 2010 (UTC)
- OK, I’ll make sure to do that in future. I have sometimes noticed ‘live’ text misbehaving in renderings, so I’m already in the habit of converting it. Odysseus1479 (talk) 04:18, 18 October 2010 (UTC)

- Yes, I noticed that sometimes as I refreshed the Wikipedia-created PNG was created as necessary, and sometimes it wasn't. I was on a poor internet connection and so decided to leave this for 24hrs in case the image would update on servers, and review this evening. It appears that you've fixed it now anyway, so thanks!
- Regarding categorisation, I know there was some discussion on the Superseded Images talk page and probably many more discussions elsewhere. I understand that there are multiple opinions on the best way to tackle this - some feel that all images, regardless of duplicates, should be categorised according to content. Some that only the most relevant image of a set of duplicates should be categorised for its content, with the others categorised as being superseded. Others feel that the other versions should have 'superseded' sub-categories created in the content categories.
- I obviously don't want to go against agreed Wikimedia policy, but I've not been able to find a general consensus on this yet. My personal opinion is that if there is a two-way link between the original and derivative image, then only one need be categorised for their shared content. The most elegant solution would then be to have a sub-category within this content category for the original image, but I understand that this is hardly achievable with the vast number of used categories. I'm by no means 100% decided on this and very open to discussion! Serenthia 13:12, 3 November 2010 (UTC)
- There are some semi-specific sub-categories for superseded images (e.g. Category:Anti logos obsoleted by SVG replacement), but I'm not sure I see much value in putting images in Category:Superseded only, with no other categorization. If an image is low quality and practically worthless, then it should be nominated for deletion; otherwise it should have some semi-specific category of some kind, indicating in some way the content of the picture. In any case, categories should not removed until after the replacement images has been seen to be fully-functioning... AnonMoos (talk) 16:32, 3 November 2010 (UTC)

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2017 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the twelfth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2017) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top 2 from each sub-category.
In the final round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2017.
Round 2 will end on 22 July 2018, 23:59 UTC.

Conversions[edit]
Hi, you convert files to SVG, thank you. To make it clear: conversions are not retouchings ! Therefore the Template:Retouched is not a good choice. Also they are not derivations.
For conversions we have the Template:AutVec which tells 1) the user who made the raster image, 2) the user who converted it to SVG, 3) the name of the raster image.
You can see examples how it can be done, e.g. Basshunter Full Logo.svg, BBC Japan Box Ident.svg, Velite.svg and Amaranto con cavallo rampante.svg which are now much less complicated.
Moreover, it would be another good idea to let Image generation desribe SVG images, with the script it is quite easy. -- sarang♥사랑 11:31, 7 September 2022 (UTC)
