First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.
  • Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

@Tiven2240: there are two links in the source parameter of this file, first one is the page link on which the file is present, second one is the direct link to the file. The person has recently been retired (his farewell video) and the picture you see on the page link is of someone who replaced him. But the direct link to the file still works. There's no license at https://indianarmy.nic.in/writereaddata/Images/Content/1000040007/cdr_artrac.jpg. Please note that, as stated on the template you put on the file, you "must acknowledge the provider, source, and license of data by explicitly publishing the attribution statement, including the DOI (Digital Object Identifier), or the URL (Uniform Resource Locator), or the URI (Uniform Resource Identifier) of the data concerned." Why do you self review your uploads?

For example: File:Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman in a MiG-21 Trainer aircraft, at Air Force Station Pathankot, Punjab on September 02, 2019 (cropped).jpg. You aren’t even a reviewer. I suggest you remove the reviewed tag from each of your uploads as per Commons guidelines.— Vaibhavafro 💬 14:52, 6 October 2019 (UTC)

I don't review ALL my uploads (see that INAS 313 insignia, I haven't reviewed it), only the ones from Press Information Bureau, since they are no-brainer. And there's already a bot here (GazothBot, he's on a vacation these days) who has uploaded 100 thousand + images from pib. —Sarvatra (talk, contribs) 18:57, 6 October 2019 (UTC)

You must request speedy deletion of this file as government license does NOT cover military insignia (read the “exemptions”). However, you can upload it as fair-use image to Wikipedia directly for the article you want to use it in. See this as example.— Vaibhavafro 💬 16:00, 6 October 2019 (UTC)

I did read about the license exemptions. But all the images (with GODL-India license) at Category:Indian Navy aircraft squadrons emblems are already reviewed. So I went ahead and uploaded it. —Sarvatra (talk, contribs) 18:47, 6 October 2019 (UTC)

Can you please request it’s renaming under “original uploaded request” criterion to “Two HAL Tejas flying in formation”? That image is NOT from LIMA because:

1) LIMA is not a desert.

2) Tejas are not fully armed in LIMA.
