Kategorisierung

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Clidemia.hirta.leaves.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL-self}} to release it under the GFDL or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Huntsman spiders

[edit]

The map you drew on Huntsman spiders I believe is off. I've been finding them in my grandmother's house in Oklahoma very often, and a few times in my mother's house. I don't think they stay south of the U.S. I am unsure of what areas other than Oklahoma that they reside though. - Anonymous

yes, these maps are screamingly incorrect. for the most part, they are drawn 'by country'. if i get better info, i will replace them. i changed the sparassidae map to fit your information. thanks :) --Sarefo 01:43, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Removing categories

[edit]

Do you have a reason for doing this? — Omegatron 13:17, 28 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

yes: i collected all these images from the same series into a gallery page, and entered the categories into the gallery page. this way, the pictures stay together. cheers --Sarefo 17:32, 9 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Please don't do that. Categories are important for allowing people to find images. Please read Commons:Categories and Commons:First steps/Sorting. — Omegatron 18:39, 9 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree. species pictures should be categorized according to the taxonomy tree. tagging everything as Category:Araneae will clutter the category up and make it rather useless. please check out the category to see what i mean: there's the category tree on top, and then there are your pictures (and one black widow from somebody who added it after i cleaned it up). the reason is not that there are so few spider pics, but that that's not how the categorization is done at the moment. that's why i spent several hours categorizing the pictures to the best of my knowledge and at the moment very limited available time. in this specific case, the series of the unknown spiders, i found it easiest to put all of them into one (temporary) gallery page called Spider eating moths, and link this. this way, if somebody comes along and determines the species, we'll just move the whole bulk of the series to a page like this or this. this will ensure that people will find the pictures if they look for it. regarding the Category:Unknown spiders, the problem with categorizing every picture is that it will not be easily visible that all these pictures belong together, meaning that every single picture will be determined, and not the whole of it, meaning lots of unnecessary sorting out work. because i'm pretty sure of my point, i'll again delete the categories from the pictures soon; in doing so, i don't mean to work against, but with you, while at the same time ensuring that the consistency and maintainability of the spider picture categorization works best for all of us. let's not start a useless edit war. if you still disagree, please let me know in this thread. if we come to the consensus that your way to do it is the way, i'll re-add the categories myself. deal? cheers --Sarefo 19:18, 9 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The pictures are not all of the same spiders, and there is no reason they should be linked together other than the fact they were taken by me. If you dispute the categorization, bring it up on the Village Pump and see what others think; please don't start a useless edit war. — Omegatron 16:39, 17 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the above, if you happen to be this individual, you can assure the license availability by sending an email to permissions (a) wikimedia.org. Image Permissions

[edit]

Please don't take any offense by my request. Frequently, we receive invalid permissions from users who simply want to display whatever images they deem necessary. Often, these images are obtained without permissions.

As such, we require the ability to independantly verify the permissions. If you have received the permissions to use these images via email, released via GFDL or another free license, kindly forward the permissions email to permissions@wikipedia.org. If you have otherwise recieved permissions, kindly follow the directions outlined at Commons:Email templates to have the image owners provide the Wikimedia Foundation with permissions.

Thank you for your contributions. Cary "Bastique" Bass parler voir 16:46, 10 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That makes sense; what i don't understand is, if i forward the email, saying something like "sure, you can use all the species pics. cheers marshal" to permissions@wikipedia.org, how do you know that these pictures belong to the forwarded permission? cheers --Sarefo 22:37, 10 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It's an added incentive for good faith. My own feelings is that if an email is sent from an outside source that can be independantly verified, then our job is done. That way, if, in fact, it is done in bad faith, the weight of guilt is upon the user rather than the Wikimedia Foundation. It's not a perfect system but it certainly supports good faith uploads and greatly discourages people who are interested in ignoring our policies. Cary "Bastique" Bass parler voir 13:18, 11 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
ok, i've sent two mails from people that gave me permission. --Sarefo 06:23, 12 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Are you sure that this image should be tagged as {{cc-by-sa-2.5}}? There is a large digital watermark on it that says "Copyright Jeremy Miller". Also, the usage of watermarks is strongly discouraged according to policy. Thanks. Zzyzx11 07:00, 21 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Oarces reticulatus - Mimetidae (Jeremy Miller).jpg and Image:Thaidia sp. - Austrochilidae (Jeremy Miller).jpg, and some of the other image you have recently uploaded also have watermarks too. Zzyzx11 07:19, 21 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

yes, i did these watermarks. i also learned that watermarks are discouraged. here's how the story went: Jeremy Miller gave me these pictures for wikipedia a while ago, and i did not recognize he was licensing it non-commercial only. now, after a time, i had a discussion and it emerged that he was willing to publish them under a cc-license, but only when they are watermarked. it only occured to me hours later that this makes no sense, because the derivative section states that everybody can modify the pictures, ie. remove the watermark. now here's what i will do: i'll remove the pictures from the commons, and put them up in the english wiki, under a cc-by-nd-sa license, with the watermark, because this is the only way Mr. Miller will share the pictures. --Sarefo 12:47, 21 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"A license cannot feature both the Share Alike and No Derivative Works options" per Choosing a License - Creative Commons. If you are contemplating uploading to English Wikipedia under one of the following licenses (the last via http://creativecommons.org/license/results-one?license_code=by-nd), I will tell you that all four are incompatible with English Wikipedia because of the No Derivative Works option and subject to tagging with w:Template:Db-ccnoncom per w:Wikipedia:Image copyright tags/Deprecated#Non-free Creative Commons licenses:

daddy long legs

[edit]

Hi, you're right, but that category fits better than unknown species. Maybe the best solution is, if someone will create unknown arthropods subcategory, there is more images which not represent insects nor spiders. Regards, --10:15, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
