Oh good![edit]

Someone dealing with categories in England :) If I can help please do let me know. You may want to take a look at enabling HotCat (from preferences, Gadgets) - it can may dealing with categories a little quicker & checks for the existence of the category too.

It is a mine field in some ways - if you haven't looked at the top level cat yet you may wish to do so (I didn't but wish I had!). It is good to try and get consistency across counties etc. Thanks & regards --Herby talk thyme 16:10, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Rwendland.

Thanks for the compliment. Museums can be a pain to get a picture when they don't allow flash or a tripod! If you have any more you'd like me to see if I can improve then let me know. Regards, Ian Dunster (talk) 22:10, 16 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

Hello,

I have received explicit permission from IDF spokesperson website to upload this image and 2 to be used at Lebanon/Israel border clash. The email is as follows:

"Hey [my name],

You can use IDFspokesperson photos as long as you credit the source of the pictures. If you have any more questions related to media platforms online please email us here.

Thanks! Ron Fisher"

-- New Media Desk IDF Spokesperson's Unit

website link

Do I need to take a screenshot of the email or what?

thanks!

Hi DougD, I'm afraid you have to use the Commons:OTRS system to get a third party agreement by email. I've done this once, and it is a bit tedious. I got the third party to email the boiler-plate email in himself, having drafted it for him to forward on. You could put the image on en.wikipedia instead, then claim "fair-use", but someone might argue you could produce a similar map yourself. It would be nice if more govt organisations explicitly put things into the PD as the U.S. govt does (or Creative Commons).
NB Did you get enough time to see the reason why File:PalestinianMilitants1.jpg was deleted? It was deleted so quickly there was little time for anyone to see the rationale - now even I can no longer see the reason I gave, which is a bit frustrating! I should have kept a record. Rwendland (talk) 17:33, 5 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think the original author ripped the photo from reuters and passed it as his own. The flickr account said all his photos were CC and could be edited/whatever as long as he was given credit.

Could you explain how I put this on en.wikipedia specifically? I really don't understand how this all works. thanks for the fast response!DougD (talk) 22:18, 5 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The policy is en:Wikipedia:Non-free content, but having looked at it again I don't think it would allow this image, effectively a map. So you are stuck with Commons:OTRS I think. This has the advantage that articles in other languages could use it. Rwendland (talk) 22:34, 5 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Are you sure? The photo is property of IDF spokesperson and the editor said it could be used on wikipedia as long as the author is given credit. Here was the other picture I forgot to link: 1. I guess it could be cropped. Can I use this in the article? DougD (talk) 00:37, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The OTRS system is aimed at formally recording consent, so that should be the way to go. This kind of map is not flagged "Acceptable use" in en:Wikipedia:Non-free content - in fact maps that could be redrawn are down as "Unacceptable use". Sorry. Rwendland (talk) 01:39, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
All right but what about the other picture? The spokesperson said any picture off their site could be used as long as they were given permission. How does this ORTS system works? Can I use the other picture? DougD (talk) 01:52, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Rwendland,

Thanks very much for the correction of the description of that image. Looks like I somehow typed the wrong description in there by mistake. Much appreciated, Regards Green Lane (talk) 17:35, 11 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No probs. It's a good photo for the Skybolt article. Rwendland (talk) 22:50, 11 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry[edit]

Hi Rwendland, Sorry for mistakingly moving that picture! I will be more carefull next time :) Regards, Alf

No probs Alf. Gald somone was interested in that not-so-good photo! Rwendland (talk) 18:17, 15 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, due to technical issues with the image software here, text on transparent background in a GIF file results in a low-quality display when the file is resized. It would be better to eliminate the transparent background (change to a fully-opaque GIF) or change to PNG format. (Changing to true-vector SVG format would be best of all.) AnonMoos (talk) 22:02, 13 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I've converted it to PNG with the GIMP for now. I was using the gif as Excel generated it. I'd quite like to produce a SVG, but have little experience, and was in a hurry. Would gnuplot be a good choice for this kind of data to SVG? Rwendland (talk) 00:54, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Corbyn Liverpool 2, cropped.png, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!
