Asking (again) for topographic maps (using QGis)

Hello again, sorry that I couldn’t respond for so long ago because after that I was really unable to do anything about this part, but now I started again as I understood the steps you were referring to do on both QGis and Inkscape which were really helpful ;), but still I have a few things to ask:

1. My main problem about doing maps on QGis and exporting them into SVG is that on the Print Layout when I put the map as it was in the canvas viewer (the main QGis viewer) and export it into SVG unfortunately it doesn’t crop to the page, so when I open the exported file on Inkscape it actually takes the whole earth map from QGis and also make a very large file to work with. I tried only using the GSHHG data without anything else and it took about 200mb a file, which practically was the base map with Natural Earth bathymery.

Luckily, but I didn’t realised how, it did once crop the layout map to the page and the SVG file was around 50mb, so was pretty manageable to open it and edit on Inkscape. Also I want to say that I used the GMTED2010 layers as raster, not as vector yet, but following the colour scheme based on elevation to about 3500m, as you said and did in some of your recent maps which really helped me.

So I was asking how do you resolve this problem about cropping to the selected page on the Print Layout and exported to SVG to open into Inkscape without opening a very large file (as I had about to 200mb or 400mb and even more from this). That’s why I used them in raster, rather than vectorised and edit them in Inkscape.

2. I also was unable to do the vectorisation of the hillshade on Inkscape, after I started read again all you said, I tried the bitmap but still didn’t figure out how would work as it didn’t gave me any promising results, probably I didn’t use it correctly. Still very helpful that I understood from you how to do it, also with the video tutorial from YT that helped me how to make a hillshade and also how to make elevations for map out of tiff files on QGis.

On Inkscape, I used the hillshade as a raster grey transparent layer over the elevation layers which produce a pretty nice effect of an topo map.

So maybe if I try and understand your method of vectorisation and exporting into SVG probably (I hope) won’t result into such a large and unmanageable, useless file, but if you could tell, let me know.

And also GDAL works well on OSX.

Thanks for all the knowledge I received from you in the previous topic about GMTED files and again really sorry for not replying for so long, but that period of time I couldn’t do at all maps on Inkscape, neither using QGis, and not because of an error of any sort. I couldn’t practice and advance at anything at that time, but now I can do ;)

Hope to respond if you could help me sort out this, many thanks! R1155 — Preceding unsigned comment added by R1155 (talk • contribs) 11:21, 13 October 2021 (UTC)

The mistake

Good afternoon. Thank you for your work! I wanted to clarify that some mistake was made on this map, namely: the cities of Mush and Bitlis were under the control of the Russian Amria by the autumn of 1916. Examples of the front line can be seen here: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.--NikolayLukas (talk) 16:07, 3 March 2022 (UTC)

No problem. I think the issue was due to the fact that this map was based on an earlier version of the original. I have tried to update it and make some additional corrections to it.--Rowanwindwhistler (talk) 17:39, 3 March 2022 (UTC)

Muchas gracias.--FAR (talk) 22:43, 24 March 2022 (UTC)

yuu're made discussed map of Europe. discussed bacause Abjasia & Osetia, occupied bu russians presented, but Transdnistria (Придністров’я, Приднестровье, ПМР) — not. what the reason of this map? Albedo (talk) 19:11, 7 August 2022 (UTC)

That map is simply a translation of the original map, as you can see in the map page itself. As far as I can remember, there were no changes to the map itself, simply a translation. So, if you need any clarification on anything apart from the translation, please contact the authors of the original map.--Rowanwindwhistler (talk) 21:10, 7 August 2022 (UTC)

Saluti Jeanambr (talk) 12:48, 2 October 2022 (UTC)

Ahem, the mentioned URL actually has the map from Wikipedia, as you can clearly see from the text under the map itself "Map showing Kurdish majority areas within Turkey, Kurdish Institute of Paris Map, Goran Tek-en, CC 4.0", the same one I used to create my Spanish version. Curiously enough, the original map is not marked for "speedy deletion"... If you have hard proof (not baseless accusations) that the maps are indeed violating copyright, by all means proceed to delete them (all, not just this one). If not, please do not waste people's time.--Rowanwindwhistler (talk) 06:56, 16 April 2023 (UTC)
