Location?

[edit]

Hi Carl - could you add some details of where you took File:Red-winged Blackbird on Log in Wetland.jpg, please? It will help with adding the right categories, and make the photo more valuable. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 08:26, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Can this be done to the existing file here on this site, or would I have to upload a new version of the file to make changes? I'm just starting here and not yet familiar with what can and can't be done. If I can edit the existing file, please send me a link or some brief instructions on completing the process. Currently, Indiana and USA appear in the metadata. Do you want more detail there in the metadata, or do you want location information added to the title and/or caption? Thanks! Thanks, and apologies for the late reply! Yes, you can add it to the existing file, no need to re-upload; just click on the 'edit' tab at the top of the file page, and enter any details in the description summary; I've added 'Indiana' to the file now, you can add any further detail you want to. The metadata is "hidden" so it isn't easy to see (I'd missed it myself!). It's also possible to add a geotag, these are in the format {{Location|39.768553|-86.158024}}, where 39.768553 is the latitude, and -86.158024 the longitude (minus = western hemisphere; this location is for the center of Indianopolis). This enables the file to be mapped along with other geotagged files in the same category - you can see this if you go to e.g. Category:Agelaius phoeniceus and click on 'Map of all coordinates on OSM' at the top right of the page. Hope this helps! - MPF (talk) 11:56, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. I made a change to the description field. As you said, I'm not seeing the metadata; they hid it well. Thanks! Riding with Carl (talk) 18:21, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks! That's perfect. With future new files it is good practice to include the location in the filename too, but not essential. - MPF (talk) 08:15, 2 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
