@Ched: Thanks. I'm one of the people who got much more into birding during the pandemic, and finally got a lens that could reach [some of] them so it's definitely been the year of the bird photo for me. I don't know if I would recommend jumping into the Olympus right now. Don't get me wrong, it's been good for my purposes, but Olympus recently sold their camera division to Japan Industrial Partners, and its future is as yet a little uncertain. Rumor has it they'll be focusing on high-end gear, which strikes me as a little odd because one of the reasons a lot of people got into the micro four-thirds format is that it costs a bit less. The only other company making MFT stuff is Panasonic. The main difference between them (last I checked) is that Panasonic puts their image stabilization in their lenses whereas Olympus just has it in the body. So my nice lens I use for birds wouldn't work so well with a Panasonic body. The other two main drawbacks of the format are related to the crop censor, which isn't quite as good in low light as a full frame camera, and the megapixel limitations (the highest end MFT cameras right now are 20 and maybe one with 24 MP IIRC, which is a lot, but much less than the high end Nikon/Canon). While you are right that Olympus is commercially a little uncertain right now, I think all the camera manufacturers have gone high-end. I was fortunate 10 years ago that I could start off with an entry-level camera and cheap lenses aimed at parents taking travel or family photos, but that were actually good enough for enthusiast purposes. That market has gone to mobile phones, leaving only enthusiasts or dentists. I have a bunch of Sony lenses that are modern, autofocus and cheap, if a bit plastic and lightweight. All quite capable of taking featured picture quality images. And a few Samyang manual focus lenses are that are also relatively cheap. Nothing that would cost more than £500 RRP and some that cost me as little as £75. Now, Sony don't seem much interested in anything less than £500 and most have four digits. For example, the 16-50 f/2.8 on my A-mount camera has an RRP today of £599 and the equivalent for E-mount is £1,200. Most of the love is going towards full frame cameras and lenses. Of course the "equivalent" lens is quite amazingly sharper and better made, but that doesn't help me buy one. -- Colin (talk) 15:35, 9 June 2021 (UTC)

I wonder how much of this is because the market for cameras in general is shrinking due to improvements to smartphone cameras. It's certainly got to be putting a dent in point-and-shoot sales, and makes the decision to purchase a camera squarely on the higher end. And perhaps they're concentrating on the high end fundamentals (i.e. full frame) rather than risk investing in the various alternatives like the mirrorless options... Still looking forward to see what JIP will do with Olympus, though. As things stand now, since I have a decent 20mm portrait, decent 60mm macro, and a good 40-150mm plus 2x teleconverter, the only things I could see myself using for now would be a wide angle (I have a manual focus rokinon that I've never gotten great results from) or an even longer zoom. The thing is, to get a jump up in zoom we're talking about big $$. MFT seems to skip from "pretty lousy" to "really good" at >150mm, so getting the Olympus 300mm pro or especially the 150-400mm pro would cost more than the rest of my gear put together... — Rhododendrites ^talk |  00:54, 1 August 2021 (UTC)

Compare 2010, 2012 and 2020. In 2010, there were 108 million, point-and-shoot cameras made and in 2020 only 3.5 million. In 2012, there were 21 million interchangeable-lens cameras sold and in 2020 just over 5 million. So the interchangeable market has lost 4/5ths of its sales, but not lost them equally to all demographics. Those wanting a "good" camera for leisure use would have had to buy a DSLR in 2012 but in 2020 a good smartphone can take perfectly acceptable photos. On my walking holiday last year, I just used my smartphone. I remember back when I started there were statistics that nearly all interchangeable lens cameras were sold to people who didn't buy another lens. That suggests that the interchangeable lens aspect wasn't really important to many people. So that 1/5 that is left is enthusiasts and professionals.

For Sony, it seems the APS-C size has found favour with vloggers. But for still photographers, they are focusing on full frame.

Wrt your long telephoto, is rental an option with Olympus, or is it too small a brand? You could rent for a week you went on holiday, say. I saw a funny advert about renting equipment, on the London Underground. It had some "stat" about the average electric drill only being used for about 10 minutes in its lifetime, which is nn seconds a year, and there are mm,000 households in London, so London actually only needs 2.8 drills. And the advert concluded: "My dad has more". I think that a bit about camera lenses, sitting on the shelf. -- Colin (talk) 09:46, 1 August 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for the links. Makes sense, though more significant a drop than I thought for interchangeable lens cameras. A long time ago I contributed to that statistic of people who bought an SLR camera and never got another lens. It was just before digital cameras became more affordable, and as soon as I got my little HP 2 megapixel point-and-shoot, the SLR went right into storage (some say it's still there to this day)
There are rental places that I've used a couple times, but I don't travel much, and those I'd be traveling with aren't interested in photography so have non-zero but exhaustible patience for outings when I'm frequently stopping to try to get a good shot of something :). If the opportunity presented itself to go on a wildlife-specific vacation, it's likely I would do just that, though (rent it). @PetarM: Thanks. Yes, I use the 2x [optical] teleconverter. He is talking about the digital teleconverter (basically like a fixed "digital zoom" that makes the pixels bigger rather than actually zooming). I've used it for video a couple times because cropping video isn't as easy as cropping a photo, but never for photography. З 1 по 30 вересня вже традиційно пройде українська частина міжнародного фотоконкурсу «Вікі любить пам'ятки»! В Україні цей конкурс пройде вже вдесяте. На конкурс можна подавати власні фото пам'яток історико-культурної спадщини України — і змагатися за призи. Більше можна прочитати за посиланням.

Радимо ознайомитися із детальними правилами, а також із відповідями на часті питання. Як і того року — у номінації «За найбільшу кількість сфотографованих пам’яток» можна отримати 21 бал за фотографії об'єктів, якщо світлин цієї пам'ятки раніше не було завантажено.

Нагадаємо, що всі фотографії автоматично беруть участь у номінації «За найбільшу кількість сфотографованих пам’яток»; однак для того, щоб фото позмагалося у номінації «Найкраще фото», потрібно підтвердити це при завантаженні.

Цього року вперше будуть окремо виділені фото з повітря (дронами, квадрокоптерами тощо) — у спеціальній номінації «Аерофото». Для того, щоб робота потрапила на спецномінацію потрібно вибрати її у Завантажувачі.

Також вперше проводиться спеціальна номінація «Пам'ятки Подесення», знову пройдуть спецномінації «Відео», «Єврейська спадщина», «Млини», «Пам'ятки національно-визвольної боротьби» та «Via Regia Ukraine». Для участі світлин у цих спецномінаціях не потрібно обирати нічого у Завантажувачі — світлини зараховуватимуться автоматично з відповідних списків.

Geez. You need to mow the grass here on your talk page! The mermaid photo is excellent. I found it by doing a generic "model release" search using commons basic search function (think of flickr's interestingness algorithm). Then I switched to the template/commons namespaces and found the other things I mentioned. I've been curious about the attitude towards personality rights on Commons, as I do a fair bit of street photography and sometimes am sad that I can't post a photo because a kid ran through the frame recovering a stray soccer ball at just the right moment.

I took some pictures of the mayor today, it being the 77-year commemoration of the liberation of my small town. The traffic jams were a bit of a mess to clear the Monuments aux Morts. I suppose as a public figure acting in an official capacity outside that's something I could post if any of them were any good.

Regarding the pump thread, I'm just curious about Commons mores...

Hi SashiRolls. Took the lawnmower for a quick spin. Thanks re: mermaid. Decidedly fewer pictures of people since the pandemic began. The Mermaid Parade for this year was canceled again (it was going to be in two weeks). :/

Consent and releases on Commons are tricky, messy, sometimes depressing, and sometimes frustrating business. There are the country-specific laws, the moral/ethical cases where legality isn't an issue (a controversial DR some months ago may be of interest, which led to the COM:NOCREEPSHOTS shortcut), and then the question of due diligence and documentation. Drawing a line is really hard when it comes to "can we assume they got permission and/or a release". For that video linked at VP, the level of production and the way the people in the video seemed to clearly know they were being filmed makes me think it's not an issue. Standard practice AFAIK is to just put the personality rights template on there and move on, handling complaints by subjects on a case-by-case basis. I think there's room to disagree, but that would seem to make this project untenable. When I take a photo of someone, I generally err on the side of asking permission, but I don't get them to sign a release. You may be interested to check out this list of case studies.

Regarding the Mayor, I suppose it depends on where you live. If it's a US city and the mayor was in a public place, then yeah, I'd think you're covered. If, as may be implied by your reference to Monuments aux Morts, it's in France, then you're still probably fine per Commons:Country_specific_consent_requirements#France. — Rhododendrites ^talk |  20:54, 1 September 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for showing me all that! I've read some of it quickly (some of the case studies are rather painful...), and some of it, especially the last link, more carefully. It confirms my feeling that it's wisest to err on the side of caution. Нагадуємо, що до 30 вересня включно можна вантажити світлини та відео культурної спадщини України до національного етапу міжнародного фотоконкурсу «Вікі любить пам'ятки»!

Зараз Україна посідає 3-є місце за кількістю завантажених світлин, поступаючись Російській Федерації та Німеччині. За першу половину місяця було завантажено світлини пам'яток із усіх регіонів України, але частина із них є дуже погано представлена. @Jdx: Thanks. I can't remember where I got the "inefficient curve" bit. I do remember that the tour guide said the curve of the platform combined with the longer cars meant there were big gaps between the train doors and the platform, and thought that jibed with what was in the article but I could be wrong. I have no objection to someone rewriting it as they see fit. @Jdx and Rhododendrites: Actually, the fact that the platform was short and couldn't be lengthened was not the biggest problem with the station. At least one short station stuck around until quite recently, South Ferry; another station, Worth Street, remained for 17 years after City Hall closed, but one of the platforms was never lengthened. The main reason it was closed altogether is that it was too close to another station, Brooklyn Bridge/City Hall, which was also much busier, providing transfers to other train lines and being served 24 hours a day. City Hall, by contrast, could only ever be served by local trains and operated only during the daytime. Epicgenius (talk) 14:54, 24 October 2021 (UTC)
