Comments There are some remains of CA, and it is possible, someone demands perspective correction, but for me it is QI because of good composition, good lighting, acceptable sharpness. --Smial 12:20, 30 June 2016 (UTC)

OK files

Hello again. These are some photos I think have a good chance at QIC. Some may require a bit of fixing such as CA, tilt or perspective, but overall good. Most of the Flickr photos are simply too small for QI and your camera goes very grainy indoors plus it’s not that great for photos with longer depths. A pity since you have a good eye for motifs. I’ll take a further look in your Category later on. Best, cart-Talk 08:21, 4 October 2016 (UTC)

@W.carter: Thanks! I probably should've set up a special category before asking, but the September 23 date in my last message was to try to save you the time of going through the ones that aren't mine (everything I've uploaded from Flickr, for example) :) but all of those you linked to are mine except the very last one (which I just perspective corrected before sending it through DYK). Don't know if your assessment of the camera remains the same. I created a subcategory for ones I took post-smartphone, and left out images of edit-a-thons that aren't the sort of thing that make sense for QIC: Category:Photographs taken by User:Rhododendrites (EPL6, nonevent). Thanks again, and no worries at all if you'd rather stop with the list above. Very helpful. — Rhododendrites talk13:18, 4 October 2016 (UTC)

So I looked through the category. I did not check out every single photo, only those which had a good composition or if there were several versions of one motif, I only checked out the best cuts. I found some more that could be considered for QI, but many were just too unsharp. All QICs are reviewed at full size and that's where most fall short. I really like the pics of the chess players, but since they involve people, unsharpness is even less forgiving. That goes for many of the pics of the memorials as vell, since they have spectators and bystanders who need to be sharper. At low light, the pics are also rather grainy/noisy. Not exactly sure what you can do about this. Have you ever tried using a tripod? That way you can check if it's the cameras fault or if you have an unsteady hand. You can also use my trick of using the self timer and set the camera down on something to avoid any unwanted camera shake. Take the same motif hand-held style and see if there is any difference. New list below. cart-Talk 19:38, 4 October 2016 (UTC)

@W.carter: Super helpful. Thanks again. I'll surely make some improvements and nominate some of these, but most likely not in the next week (will be at the Wikiconference in San Diego -- I'd ask if you thought about attending, but it's a little bit of a trek for you :) ). — Rhododendrites talk23:30, 5 October 2016 (UTC)
No problem, you're always welcome to ask. :) How I envy you going to San Diego! Say hi to La Jolla from me. I lived there for a while a lifetime ago. And thank you so much for the Barnstar! :D That was very kind and thoughtful of you. Have a save journey! cart-Talk 09:42, 6 October 2016 (UTC)
@W.carter: Tweaked the first five and sent them off to QIC (that's not a solicitation of a review -- just an update :) ). For a couple of them, I attempted a perspective correction but wound up with something rather extreme. Uploaded just for illustration purposes (see current version vs. perspective adjusted and current version vs. perspective adjusted). Are these sorts of adjustments still preferable?
I wasn't going to go to La Jolla, since I didn't think I'd have time and it's a bit far from the city for someone without a car. But after many hours of going to museums during the pre-conference, I found myself with an afternoon to explore. I kept coming across people mentioning La Jolla, so I rented a car for a few hours and drove up. It is indeed beautiful, but for me the highlight was unexpectedly stumbling upon the sea lions (hard not to) -- hundreds of them, very loud and close enough to touch (I had to back out of the way at one point). I've seen sea lions in San Francisco and seals in Rhode Island, but always from a distance. First time seeing them up close. Told them hi for you. They barked something in response -- it sounded relatively friendly. Walked around until dusk and took plenty of pictures (too many).
Moving from La Jolla to Bunge seems like the sort of move that has a good story, but I'll try not to pry. :) — Rhododendrites talk03:55, 13 October 2016 (UTC)
Welcome back! :) Couldn't do anything about the nominations since other users beat me to it. And yes, the perspective corrections are preferred even if some pics come out slightly distorted. It's an ongoing debate at FPC, pros and cons. In some cases you can get away with not doing it if it's intentional and adds to the photo, like in this one.
I'm glad I could in a small way contribute to your encounter with the sea lions and thank you for sending them my regards. :) Looking forward to the photos! You can never take too many, I took over 800 to get this one FP (see text). I mostly remember the sea otters in the harbor, which is why I was happy to get this article in shape. Also remember the white shark they caught and had on display for a day or so down by the docks. That kept me out of the water for days! I liked San Diego very much, especially Balboa Park with the planetarium and everything. I've always been a traveler, I've lived in many places and visited even more. Yes, there are loads of stories between San Diego and Bunge. ;) I think that's why I feel so at home at WP and COM. Here you get to meet people from all over the world and swap stories/pics/experiences. My current location is Lysekil on the Swedish west coast. A place with very rich marine life (like San Diego); tide pool species, seals, the occasional dolphins and even killer wales. I'll probably move on in a couple of years when I get the travel itch again. Best, cart-Talk 09:10, 13 October 2016 (UTC)

Follow-up question from QIC File:Botanical Building in Balboa Park.jpg

Please also look to this file File:Nenzenheim, die evangelisch-lutherische Pfarrkirche DmD-6-75-139-192 foto2 2016-08-06 13.38.jpg. Composition is comparable with your image (foreground and focus to main object). I have used fvalue 4,5 and ISO100, main object is sharp and foreground a bit oversharpened. I don't know if your camera has go a RAW-support. If so, please use it because it is possible to sharpen your photos much more. Greetings, --Michielverbeek (talk) 20:03, 23 October 2016 (UTC)

@Michielverbeek: Thanks for your response. So your criticism of the foreground is that it should be sharper, correct? I'm confused, though: shouldn't 4.5 be a shallower depth of field (i.e. only the primary object sharpened)? I do have the RAW for this image, and I've attempted to sharpen the foreground a bit: new version old version. Closer? — Rhododendrites talk20:50, 23 October 2016 (UTC)
@Michielverbeek: Just a follow-up, before the declined nomination is archived, to see if the update changes anything? Thanks. — Rhododendrites talk02:07, 26 October 2016 (UTC)

@XRay: Thanks for your feedback. Could you clarify what you mean? Crop out everything but the wheel? I can do that, but one of the things I like about this is off-season amusement park with no people. Maybe not the right idea for an educational photo :) Rhododendrites 15:55, 16 October 2016 (UTC)
Comment The best way may be to put the camera one meter up or go forward 5 or 10 meters. But I proposed another crop. Please check my note. Thank you. --XRay 15:24, 18 October 2016 (UTC)

Comments Good composition, main object is sharp, but why fvalue10? Foreground is not obvious enough and reduce quality seriously. If you would have used fvalue4 (and ISO100) I guess it would have been a Q1photo. --Michielverbeek 06:38, 23 October 2016 (UTC)
