Categorizing images[edit]

Hello, Redwidgeon! I took the liberty of creating a category for your Wikiversity pictures at Curriculum planning figures. Please add any others you create for the project. You might also give some thought to additional categories for images that could find use elsewhere, even something as seemingly banal as Circles. For example I also put the user-experience image from Flickr in Cartoons about education. Happy editing!—Odysseus1479 (talk) 08:41, 5 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks for your help, Odysseus1479! It is much appreciated & I will follow your lead for this in the future. Redwidgeon (talk) 16:40, 5 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. The category tree is vast, as you can imagine, and not always consistent (to say the least), but the goal is to categorize each file as specifically as possible. There’s a very helpful Gadget called HotCat, which you can activate in your Preferences, that lets you add them directly at the bottom of any page without going to an Edit screen. The latter provides auto-suggestions in the form of a pop-up menu of categories, so you often have to type only part of the name; a check-mark or X beside the entry field indicates whether or not there’s an existing category. Even if I have little idea how a particular subject is organized, guessing a keyword or two can often turn up something relevant with little effort. (Note that categories are hierarchical, unlike keywords: e.g. a file under Computer science flowcharts should not usually be in Diagrams or Computer programming because the first is indirectly contained in both of the latter.)—Odysseus1479 (talk) 20:21, 5 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
