First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: :Image:Foo.jpg, which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Hello, Red Baron 2!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File:Marine Kriegsflagge von 1848 im niedersächsischen Landesmuseum Hannover.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hallo Leute,

Here is the English text of my query:

Hi folks,

1, I took the offending photo on 10/06/2019 at 15:48:09 at the Military History Museum of the German Armed Forces in Dresden. It is filed under IMG_6486 Kriegsflagge 1848.jpg in my database.

2. I uploaded the photo to Commons and integrated it into the article about the imperial war flag.

3. Who changed the filename of my photo to "Marine Kriegsflagge von 1848 im niedersächsischen Landesmuseum Hannover.jpg"? I didn't upload the files to Commons under this name; would never have come up with Hannover.

4. The photo shows one of the few well-preserved flags from the revolutionary period of 1848. they tried to use gold instead of yellow at that time. You can learn more about the imperial war flag of 1848 here: http://www.freiburgs-geschichte.de/1848-1870_Revolution.htm#Nationalversammlung.

6. Finally it has to be clarified who could change the original file name of my photo so easily and changed it (wrongly).

Hallo, die Entwicklung deiner Datei kannst du in der Versionsgeschichte nachlesen, daraus geht z.B. hervor, wer wann warum umbenannt hat.
I am not sure what you are trying to achieve here. Do you oppose to renaming your file from Marine Kriegsflagge von 1848 im niedersächsischen Landesmuseum Hannover.jpg to Kriegsflagge der Marine des Deutschen Bundes von 1848.jpg? Do you want to object to the deletion of the remaining redirect page after moving the file? Or do you simply want to research the history of the file's names?
According to the log, you yourself uploaded the file, having named it Marine Kriegsflagge von 1848 im niedersächsischen Landesmuseum Hannover.jpg. The only renaming took place yesterday and it was renamed Kriegsflagge der Marine des Deutschen Bundes von 1848.jpg Regards, Willi P (talk) 15:23, 23 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
First of all, this is the file that I uploaded to Commons on November 12, 2019, with descriptions both in German and English and the caption Navy flag of the German Confederation: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kriegsflagge_der_Marine_des_Deutschen_Bundes_von_1848.jpg.
And to end the endless discussions: What I want to achieve is to insert the above photo into the article "Reichskriegsflagge" with the correct text. Would this be allowed? Red_Baron_2 --2003:EB:1700:D900:6D2B:638B:244F:358A 10:14, 25 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Since there is no opposition, I have reposted the image of the 1848 German Confederation Navy battle flag with the corrected museum name. Red_Baron_2 --2003:EB:1700:D900:48FE:B35E:7DB:F688 17:17, 27 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
