Help to understand[edit]

Hi RIsler (WMF). We already communicated in this case:

Please help me to undertand the tags we add to pictures uploaded to Commons. Is there somewhere a text on Internet explaining, what these tags are good for? Thank you! Kind regards, Hp. --Hp.Baumeler (talk) 13:03, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Hp.Baumeler: , If you haven't already, please visit the Main project page for the feature. Our main goal here is to help improve search and discovery of images on Commons. Over the past few years, we've received a lot of feedback that regular internet users find Commons very difficult to use to find good relevant media. The category system that Commons currently uses isn't adequate for most people. So we want to use Structured Data to make things easier to find. We've already seen improvements because of the Computer Aided Tagging feature. For instance, with our new "files depicting..." feature seen in the search bar dropdown, people can do an easy search for images depicting aerial photography. Almost all of the files that match that search were tagged recently via the Computer-aided tagging tool, and many of them don't have any text referring to "aerial" or any applicable categories, so they would not show up in other forms of existing text-based search on Commons. The computer aided tagging tool has made these valuable files more findable. This is just one example of many pieces of evidence that show the tool is making search on Commons easier to understand and use. We will continue to update and refine the system to make it better. Thank you very much RIsler (WMF), this your information is very helpfull! It seems to be a huge and very helpful project! Thank you for this work! Here two last questions:

  • Can I open one of my photographs and start the tagging prozess? How do I do that?
  • Can I add my own tags or are only computer aided tags possible?

Hello @Hp.Baumeler: . The Suggested Tags tool currently does not work on most older files. Its primary role is to analyze a.) newly uploaded files and b.) files with Assessments (quality, featured, valued) that populate the Popular tab in the tool. The best way to continue to use the tool now is to upload new files and continue to opt-in to the Suggested Tags system. To answer your second question - we will soon add the ability to add tags/depicts statements within the Suggested Tags interface (look for that in a couple of weeks or so). But you can always add those statements to your existing files by going to their file page, clicking on the Structured Data tab, and adding depicts statements there manually. Thanks!
