Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~. To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg. You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account. There are several tools to upload files. Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful. Made a mistake? Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it. Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

The original file in Commons was the .35¢ paperback cover uploaded in 2015 (not by me) and had been used in several Wikipedia articles. The file I uploaded, and which replaced it, is the first edition of the 1953 paperback with .25¢ as the price on the cover. I don't know why something that is in the public domain — copies of the paperback are included in library collections and the image of the cover is contained in numerous web sources — but ... whatever. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

In the final (and current) round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2018.

Don't want to unnecessarily criticize, but that file contains a lot of JPEG artifacts... AnonMoos (talk) 18:52, 23 July 2019 (UTC)

It was sitting in my collection of images and had put off adding it to WC for a long time. All I did was sharpen it a little before uploading it. Don't know how to deal with JPEG artifacts. I used to have a blog in the early 2000s and a friend gave me the image file to use for customization. Pyxis Solitary (talk) 01:22, 24 July 2019 (UTC)

It had probably been resized several times before it got to you. Uploading a PNG didn't really fix most of the problems, but it made it easier to upload a cleaned version... AnonMoos (talk) 04:54, 28 July 2019 (UTC)

Thank you for cleaning it up! (I honestly don't know how to have made the .png go from 67 KB to 6.) Something weird happened to the left symbol, though. There's a sort of "breaking" at the edges of the cross now. You can see the difference compared with the 60K upload. Pyxis Solitary (talk) 06:38, 28 July 2019 (UTC)

SVG

Making sure each stripe was a rectangle of uniformly-colored pixels exactly 60 pixels high (and similarly for the canton away from the symbol) did most of the work. I didn't so much roughen the edges of the symbol as reveal what was already there. A white symbol on medium blue is not supposed to have a border of dark blue pixels in cases like this; when I got rid of this spurious border and other JPEG artifacts, the rough edges became almost inevitable. However, now I've uploaded an SVG, which is smooth as the rendering resolution allows... AnonMoos (talk) 11:40, 28 July 2019 (UTC)

Old sleazy paperback covers

Not sure why you seemed to be having so much difficulty with them above; most of those first published in the United States before 1964 are out of copyright (the one I uploaded, File:Thirdsex bookcover 1959.jpg, wasn't challenged). AnonMoos (talk) 11:51, 28 July 2019 (UTC)

This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on 1 May 2023, 23:59:59 UTC.
