@Jkadavoor: Agree it can be very hard to tell Hosta cultivars apart. I went and read that discussion you linked. I agree with them. I agree it's good to have the species name at least, and cultivar if possible, but there's no requirement for it in the written rules. I think the ID as we have it is as good as it's going to get. No one answered my post on en:WT:Plants. Agree we should leave it as is. I didn't know about the Hosta registry Sminthopsis84 linked to; that's a great reference and Sminth is correct, that description (when you enter Yellow Splash Rim) matches what is in the FPC photo. I feel like I have a pretty decent handle on QIC at this point, but I'm not really a good person to ask about FPC -- I'm don't have very much experience there and am frequently surprised at what does/doesn't make the cut. FPC

Hello again,

FPC is a very difficult topic. I've seen when Cart nominated your FP. She is very good in identifying possible FPCs and has an aestethical intution; Ikan has it, too. However, I can't tell you what images the people in FPC support and which not. There are many images getting votes and I can't understand why. Others are really excellent, of course. But I don't get the point. There is only one way: if an image is excellent for you, try. And try again and again and again. You can also nominate images of others in FPC. If you see some good picture in QIC and you like it a lot, nominate it in FPC. This helps for understanding the different opinions.

I think these of your QIs are interesting: the blue chair, moon bridge 8, waterfall 5 and "bolt on a pump LR". But I don't dare to say that they could succeed. Moon bridge 8 could have a bit more saturation of the red tones (or shoot it again with more interesting lighting), the composition is very good. The waterfall looks a bit flat, maybe a different angle of view can be more interesting. However, you got well the flowing water.

Don't worry about it, maybe it simply isn't an FP. FPC can get very frustrating. The best choice is always to select an image you would vote for. However, there are images that get promoted that I wouldn't have chosen. That's for tastes and they are different. Anyway, listen to what they tell you, especially Ikan, Cart and Collin. The blue chair is interesting and has a potential, so you could try to get a better shot but noone can say that it will succeed. --Basotxerri (talk) 05:33, 2 July 2017 (UTC)

Basotxerri I've redone File:Miyazaki Japanese Moon Bridge 8 LR.jpg starting from the original RAW file using a new workflow I've learned from youtube. See what you think. (For me it first pulls up the old cached version, so I have to force it to pull the new one up). I've withdrawn the bolt photo and will reshoot it. It's only 2 minutes from my house. Initially it regrouped the families of butterflies nocturnes but with time we know that several species in these families are diurnal. This is the case for the one that is presented. Yes, it cleans up anything that hit the 9-days-mark after they have been manually closed (AFAIK), it's just anything that is not featured before the deadline that needs a bit of a helping hand to keep the list tidy. You can look at the 'History' for Commons:Featured picture candidates/candidate list to see how User:FPCBot works. this is not necessary. First of all, archive of rejected idea should be done properly, but it has a value if the discussion is kept open for some months. I mean don't worry, put it back. There is no hurry. I take care of 90% of the archive and I can assure, they can stay there for months, the community is patient. Congratulations

...for the Plectranthus FPC promotion. I didn't think it would make it because I saw it overall too unsharp... But as you see, I was pretty wrong.

How is your plan to buy the Nikon? The last days I was thinking about if it makes sense and what kind of advance someone could expect, e. g. what it would be in my case or in your case. The most advantages would be in resolution (MP) and dynamic range. Resolution isn't a thing that is very interesting for me but dynamic range is. When I look at the DXOmark values, I see quite a gap between MFT cameras and the current Nikons, really a reason for envy. Interestingly, your D5300 is almost on the same level as the D810, so maybe there wouldn't be so much difference? On the other hand the last days I saw some rather burnt out D800 woodland pictures on QIC that makes me thinking that maybe better shooting techniques are more important than high level gear.

Baso Why thank you! Did you notice the two that just got FP were taken only 24 minutes apart? And the one I have now at FPC was taken during that time too. And YEA CHESTER the Horse! I'm still considering the new Nikon. I'm waiting to see the actual price and what the reviews say by people who actually use it. Yes, camera body is part of what I see as triangle, the other two sides being technique and lenses. If I don't get the new Nikon, I'll get more lenses for my D5300. I've gotten to where I almost exclusively use by 85mm prime lens--it cost almost as much as my camera. I rarely use the two kit lenses now. Pinging @Johann Jaritz: as he seemed intested in this too. Lenses are important! Before my holidays, I had bought a new 28 mm eq. lens to make my GM1 even more pocketable. And just now I'm developing the photos and I'm very disappointed about the image quality, not very sharp and getting blurry towards the corners. Very frustrating! Anyway, lenses last longer than a camera so it's reasonable to invest here.

First of all: Congratulations on your two successful FPCs! Nice work! Light is everything when shooting and you have to make use of it while it lasts. I also went looking for a photo at QIC that I sent to CR and I was surprised to see it gone so I checked. I see that you closed it, only you did that way too early. If you look at the rules for CR, you'll see that it says: "After a minimum period of 48 hours since the last entry, the decision will be registered...", you closed it 12 h and 43 min after the last vote. You also forgot to change the text "QICtotal" to "QICresult" leaving it only sort of half-closed when the QICBot moved it to log. (I usually forget the other part about changing "Discuss" to something else, but both should be done.) Sure, A.Savin, but gosh, that was AGES ago. It was back before my name change from Rlevse to PumpkinSky (see my user page, it's always been fully disclosed). Yea, I saw some posts about the unpleasant events. I honestly don't recall if I did a rename or just started with a new account. That was in 2010 or 2011, I think. If it was done by just starting a new account then someone would have had to transfer the admin rights, that should be in logs. Focus stacking

The new Raja photo is very good. The soft light is excellent, the branch gives the photo a good depth, the color is very appetizing and the overall composition is great. However, the stacking program missed a few spots in the photo; it very often does that and you have to clean it up manually. This is very annoying, but we all have to do that. I just wanted to point that out to you since you are new with this technique. I'll mark the areas on the photo so you'll know what to look for. The cleanup can be done by fixing/retouching the masks in the different layers or by simply using the first stack of aligned layers and select a piece from the right/sharp layer and patch in. After this is done, I too think this is a FPC. You did very well, the software had some glitches. ;) --cart-Talk 08:12, 19 August 2017 (UTC)

OK Cart and Johann, after 7 hours, about half of it learning new tools and techniques in PS, here's my current version. The leaves in the upper left were by far the biggest pain. I extended some borders too. I never quite got the hang of retouching masks or using select/copy/paste from layers. What worked for me, and I doubt this is the "official" way, is I'd open the RAW files needed into PS, align and merge them, then find the best RAW image in LR for a given fix and open it in PS in a separate tab; select the area needed in the good copy, and special paste it into the merged PSD file; then save it, and re fix it in LR. I also threw out 3 of the blurriest source files; it seems this can throw off the stacking, so the new version used 16 files instead of 19. This version is defintely much better and hope it' at least close to FPC worthy. Johann, thanks for noticing it had potential and Cart thanks for the tips and thinking it had potential too. Oh, Johann, I pretty much have to use a tripod because I usually can't hand hold the camera steady enough for a real sharp image. ;-) PumpkinSky talk 17:57, 19 August 2017 (UTC)

Of course a tripod delivers sharper images and I would be well advised to use one more frequently to achieve better results. Quick question. I noticed this, which looked like it was probably a mistake, since it was someone else who started the nomination. I undid for that reason, but quickly felt like maybe I shouldn't have done so, since I'm unclear about some of the FPC processes. The person who started the delisting did agree it should've been on enwiki, so I'm unclear if your adding of the withdrawal message was intentional as some shortcut to closing the thread? User:Jennifer6969 replaced my user page with an image of Fuck You(see below) and wants to have an edit war with me. Plus it is an inappropriate username(if you know what it means) and possible sock of INC because behavior is similar to INC's other socks, User:Kasey1996 and User:Jessy Walters for example. ...for the Plectranthus FPC promotion. I didn't think it would make it because I saw it overall too unsharp... But as you see, I was pretty wrong.

How is your plan to buy the Nikon? The last days I was thinking about if it makes sense and what kind of advance someone could expect, e. g. what it would be in my case or in your case. The most advantages would be in resolution (MP) and dynamic range. Resolution isn't a thing that is very interesting for me but dynamic range is. When I look at the DXOmark values, I see quite a gap between MFT cameras and the current Nikons, really a reason for envy. Interestingly, your D5300 is almost on the same level as the D810, so maybe there wouldn't be so much difference? On the other hand the last days I saw some rather burnt out D800 woodland pictures on QIC that makes me thinking that maybe better shooting techniques are more important than high level gear.

Baso Why thank you! Did you notice the two that just got FP were taken only 24 minutes apart? And the one I have now at FPC was taken during that time too. And YEA CHESTER the Horse! I'm still considering the new Nikon. I'm waiting to see the actual price and what the reviews say by people who actually use it. Yes, camera body is part of what I see as triangle, the other two sides being technique and lenses. If I don't get the new Nikon, I'll get more lenses for my D5300. I've gotten to where I almost exclusively use by 85mm prime lens--it cost almost as much as my camera. I rarely use the two kit lenses now. Pinging @Johann Jaritz: as he seemed intested in this too. Lenses are important! Before my holidays, I had bought a new 28 mm eq. lens to make my GM1 even more pocketable. And just now I'm developing the photos and I'm very disappointed about the image quality, not very sharp and getting blurry towards the corners. Very frustrating! Anyway, lenses last longer than a camera so it's reasonable to invest here.

First of all: Congratulations on your two successful FPCs! Nice work! Light is everything when shooting and you have to make use of it while it lasts. I also went looking for a photo at QIC that I sent to CR and I was surprised to see it gone so I checked. I see that you closed it, only you did that way too early. If you look at the rules for CR, you'll see that it says: "After a minimum period of 48 hours since the last entry, the decision will be registered...", you closed it 12 h and 43 min after the last vote. You also forgot to change the text "QICtotal" to "QICresult" leaving it only sort of half-closed when the QICBot moved it to log. (I usually forget the other part about changing "Discuss" to something else, but both should be done.) Sure, A.Savin, but gosh, that was AGES ago. It was back before my name change from Rlevse to PumpkinSky (see my user page, it's always been fully disclosed). Yea, I saw some posts about the unpleasant events. I honestly don't recall if I did a rename or just started with a new account. That was in 2010 or 2011, I think. If it was done by just starting a new account then someone would have had to transfer the admin rights, that should be in logs. Hehe. The Mason Dixon Line is basically the border between Pennsylvania and Virginia/Maryland. That's about a 4 hour car ride from here. I've not heard that song in a few years. Focus stacking

The new Raja photo is very good. The soft light is excellent, the branch gives the photo a good depth, the color is very appetizing and the overall composition is great. However, the stacking program missed a few spots in the photo; it very often does that and you have to clean it up manually. This is very annoying, but we all have to do that. I just wanted to point that out to you since you are new with this technique. I'll mark the areas on the photo so you'll know what to look for. The cleanup can be done by fixing/retouching the masks in the different layers or by simply using the first stack of aligned layers and select a piece from the right/sharp layer and patch in. After this is done, I too think this is a FPC. You did very well, the software had some glitches. ;) --cart-Talk 08:12, 19 August 2017 (UTC)

OK Cart and Johann, after 7 hours, about half of it learning new tools and techniques in PS, here's my current version. The leaves in the upper left were by far the biggest pain. I extended some borders too. I never quite got the hang of retouching masks or using select/copy/paste from layers. What worked for me, and I doubt this is the "official" way, is I'd open the RAW files needed into PS, align and merge them, then find the best RAW image in LR for a given fix and open it in PS in a separate tab; select the area needed in the good copy, and special paste it into the merged PSD file; then save it, and re fix it in LR. I also threw out 3 of the blurriest source files; it seems this can throw off the stacking, so the new version used 16 files instead of 19. This version is defintely much better and hope it' at least close to FPC worthy. Johann, thanks for noticing it had potential and Cart thanks for the tips and thinking it had potential too. Oh, Johann, I pretty much have to use a tripod because I usually can't hand hold the camera steady enough for a real sharp image. ;-) PumpkinSky talk 17:57, 19 August 2017 (UTC)

Of course a tripod delivers sharper images and I would be well advised to use one more frequently to achieve better results. Withdrawing at FPC

Hey there,

Quick question. I noticed this, which looked like it was probably a mistake, since it was someone else who started the nomination. I undid for that reason, but quickly felt like maybe I shouldn't have done so, since I'm unclear about some of the FPC processes. The person who started the delisting did agree it should've been on enwiki, so I'm unclear if your adding of the withdrawal message was intentional as some shortcut to closing the thread? User:Jennifer6969 replaced my user page with an image of Fuck You(see below) and wants to have an edit war with me. Plus it is an inappropriate username(if you know what it means) and possible sock of INC because behavior is similar to INC's other socks, User:Kasey1996 and User:Jessy Walters for example. Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in the United States during the month of October! The United States contest saw over 1,400 people (the most of any nation this year) contribute over 8,000 great photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the United States and its territories. Hundreds of these photos are already being used to illustrate pages on various Wikimedia projects.

We're excited to announce that our national judging process has concluded, and that we have selected the winners of Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in the United States! These photos are recognized for their photographic quality, artistic merit, and their encyclopedic value as illustrations of unique historical sites. We were amazed by all of the uploads, and regret only being able to formally recognize the top 10. That being said – congratulations to our national winners and their amazing shots! Our 10 winners will be sent to the international Wiki Loves Monuments jury, who will then select the winners of the international contest. If you're interested in seeing the winners of the other national contests, you may do so at Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 winners.

User:FPCBot add every newly featured picture to Commons:Featured pictures/chronological/current month (regardless of what month it says). Someone (me for the last couple of years) has to manually remove old entries from the previous month and add it to the corresponding FP chronological page (e.g. Commons:Featured pictures/chronological/2017-B).
