Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.

This blocked user asked to be unblocked, but one or more administrators has reviewed and declined this request. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked. Other administrators can also review this block, but should not override the decision without discussion.

Request reason: "Andre Carrotflower has requested a block for "blatant" violation of copyright rules when, in reality, I was not aware of any warnings and, since I am the creator of the article in the first place, thought I was improving the article with an image of defendants from a pamphlet in my possession which does not have a copyright and was in the public domain as a political pamphlet on University of Buffalo campus when I attended school there. There is no fair reason why I should be blocked. I am not a professional editor but assumed uploading a public domain political pamphlet to Wikimedia commons would be kosher since it was in the public domain river sixty years ago! Please advise when this unjustified block is removed."

Decline reason: "No reason was given why the original photo is in public domain. Instead, it was uploaded as own work – surely incorrect license. "in the public domain as a political pamphlet" is incorrect – per US law political pamphlets are copyrightable just as any other written work. In addition, Andre Carrotflower did not request your block – he is the administrator who blocked you. "I was not aware of any warnings" is not plausible, because your user talkpage is full of copyright violation warnings. Users can be unblocked, if they understand their mistakes and give a credible promise not to continue. I encourage you to learn Commons copyright policies (you can start here) and to request unblock again, but simple "I read and understood everything" are empty words – you must explain, why your uploads were problematic. We do this because Commons is a shared media repository. Downstream wikis have different policies based on local laws. Uses that are acceptable under US law, for example, may not be acceptable in many other countries with more restrictive rules.

In addition, fair use is not compatible with our aim as a collection of freely distributable media files.

Therefore, Commons cannot legally rely on fair use provisions.

Non-free content that may be used with reference to fair use may be uploaded locally if your project allows this.

These files should be undeleted In all instances I am the author of the Wikipedia articles where these images resided and I am also the author/original owner of the images having given full copyright permission for such use on Wikipedia Commons. I have no objection to people proposing deletions but I do not think I received any kind of adequate notification that this was proposed. Moreover I request undeletion of all these titles because of same reasons: I am Jerry Ross who created the said web pages, the articles, the painting depicted in these images. I am the copyright holder of all the artworks cited and their respective images having been the same individual (Pittore44 (talk) 22:07, 5 September 2017 (UTC)) who uploaded these to Wikipedia commons. In some instances I made an error and indicated "Fair Use" not knowing this license was unsupported. But I am Pittire44 the uploader and the creator, the copyright holder, one and the same person. I did not know but know know that the pfd files, if all text, belong on Wikipedia source instead if Wikipedia Commons , did not know that until yesterday.[reply]

"Political attacks"[edit]

Pittore. I understand from your postings at COM:UDEL that you believe that deleting your uploads was somehow a "political attack" on you. First off, claiming that will not win you any friends here, nor will it help your cause in the slightest. If you want to be a wikimartyr to whatever it is you believe in be my guest, but it won't get you anywhere.

Furthermore, it's just plain wrong. No one - not the person who nominated the files for deletion, not the person who deleted them - either knows or really cares what your politics are. On Commons we care about two things to determine whether an image stays here - copyright and scope: basically "can we legally host this" and "do we want to host this". For copyright we require that either you were the author and copyright holder, or we have an explicit statement from the copyright holder that they release the image under a free licence. For scope, our purpose here is to [make] available public domain and freely-licensed educational media content to all. The emphasis there is on media - we're not interested in text (those would belong on Wikisource).

I hope this explains why your uploads were deleted. I would appreciate it if you would stop attacking people who are simply trying to curate a media archive. -mattbuck (Talk) 07:49, 3 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

E.g. This painting of Martin Sostre is copyrighted to Jerry Ross and has been published before without a free licence, but you claimed it to be your own work. If you happen to be Jerry Ross, please understand that we cannot verify your identy from your Wikimedia account alone. Each day we got lots of new accounts claiming to be notable artists but who then turn out to be impostors. In such cases we need a permission for your artwork sent be email. I am only now beginning to understand the difficulties involved in adding copyrighted material and the licenses needed. Although I have had numerous warnings regarding my attemp[ts to enter content into the Commons for p[urp[oses of uploading to various articles, I note that some have succeeded after warnings and others were nominated for deletion and were, in fact deleted. I am only now realizing the seriousness of these warnings but remain unclear why some are allowed and others are not. If I am unblocked I plan not to attempt to add any further content in the form of images to any articles unless I explicitly secure a license for doing so i.e. have copyright privileges to do so. I will need to further educate myself as how to obtain the licenses and how to properly enter that information into the Commons area.

In my most recent violation, I was under the mistaken belief that digital alteration of an image created a new, unique and therefore permissible image. I now realize that is not true and is not allowed. Editors have interpreted my actions as conscious attempts to circumvent the copyright rules which I assure you was not the case. I really did believe that such actions on my part were legitimate. I have now read the material on public domain and realize now that insufficient time has passed to make the material permitted under the copyright and licensing rules. That was a big mistake but not one of moral turpitude and it was only based on ignorance of the rules. I had not sufficiently understood the warnings and was confused as to why some images have stayed, like the Buffalo Nine pin in that article, which was a photograph I took with my own camera of a badge I had in my own possession. I did not realize that images taken from a 60-year old political pamphlet in my possession were not to be treated in a similar manner and that this was a dangerous violation of copyright law.

I short, I appeal to your good natures, to unblock me and I will strive to learn more and become a more responsible actor in the Wikipedia world. I contribute money on a regular basis to Wikipedia and support its great cause but will be the first to admit that I am only a beginner and probably look like a foolish blunderer when attempting to edit content. On the other hand, I do implore whoever is making this decision to block or unblock me not automatically regard me and my attempts as willfully in disregard for the rules, which I highly respect. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pittore44 (talk • contribs) 20:28, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I feel this is unfair. I was not "blatantly" attempting to defy instructions but rather, as an artist, seeking to add an image that I used my computer to create from an original photograph. By using Photoshop tools such as "graphic novel" an artist can create an original work based on a photograph. It was not clear in any instructions that I received, that this was not possible. Since then I have researched the issue and found: "The creator of the photograph, i.e. the photographer, usually holds the copyright to the photo and unless they've expressly given permission for its use, making a painting based on a photo would infringe the photographer's copyright. In terms of US copyright law: "Only the owner of copyright in a work has the right to prepare, or to authorize someone else to create, a new version of that work." You may be able to obtain permission to use a photo for a derivative work from the photographer, or if you're using a photo library, buy the right to use it."

So I am sorry I did not know this. As an artist, I even contemplated making an oil painting of the image but now see that even that is a violation of the photographers copyright.

I am the author of the Buffalo Nine article and I originally encouraged people to add to the article, even contacting the archivist at the University of Buffalo for his cooperation. I should not be blocked from making future contributions because this was an honest mistake and not a blatant attempt to get around the restrictions.

Adding (08/31/22). I am just adding the remark that I just checked the pamphlet from which I was attempting to post an image of the cover and there is no copyright on the document anywhere, none whatsoever. Please clarify what steps I need to take to post an image from the cover of this public domain pamphlet which has no copyright on it. Request reason: "I reviewed all the warnings and see that, for the most part, I was attempting to upload my own work prior to licensing it properly in the Commons, my bad. I have since learned how to do that correctly and regarding my own artworks, I will tale care in the future not to do that without first registering the work properly in the Commons. I also took time to review the "start here" link that explains (and I understand this now for the first time) that one cannot upload other people's work, even if it is in the public domain. I will not, of course, attempt to do that again. I am being blocked for ignoring the warnings and attempting to reload work that was the work of others several times, despite warnings to that effect, but only now fully understand my error and will not attempt to do that again. Sorry for getting paranoid, and thinking items were being removed for their political content. I now realize it was simply for violating prior warnings (that I did not take proper time to read throughly) and not because of any bias on the part of editors. I hope the block can be removed as I strive to be a responsible contributor and member of the Wikipedia and Wikimedia community."
