First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

I noticed you've uploaded one or more images and I thought I should turn your attention to a common error.
Please give some thought to writing a good description of uploaded images. This ensures that they can be used. It also helps those that review and improve categories do a better job, which also ensures that images will get used in novel and interesting ways. Thanks, and happy editing! — Manecke 18:20, 17 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't "hijack" other people's images[edit]

Your image may have some value, but it has a quite different purpose and appearance than the previously existing image Image:Nopenis.svg, and the name "Nopenis.svg" wasn't particularly suitable for your image. Therefore you should have uploaded your image under a different name, instead of overwriting somebody elese's previously-existing image with your image. I've reverted your edits, and uploaded a streamlined version of your image under the different name Image:Noporno2.svg... AnonMoos 20:31, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Now you yourself uploaded a duplicate version at Image:Zakaz Pedałowania.svg. What was the point of that? AnonMoos 20:35, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I did that, because I thinked, that you only reverted my uploads. I hijacked image because I wanted to replace vulgarities with something genitalless and thus less vulgar. Piast 22:13, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That's nice, but my original image was not really a protest against "vulgarities" as such, nor was it a general anti-porno symbol, so you completely changed its meaning and visual appearance, so that the name of the image would have no longer described its content... AnonMoos 01:47, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You also "hijacked" that image -- uploaded your contribution under the name Image:Anti-gallows.svg. AnonMoos 20:41, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I wanted to replace Polish abbreviation "Najwyższy Wymiar Kary" with international symbol. Piast 22:17, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If you want to improve what a symbol already is, then sometimes it's OK to overwrite an existing image, but if you want to change the basic visual appearance and/or fundamental meaning of a symbol, then you should always upload your version under a different name (instead of just overwriting the existing image). AnonMoos 01:45, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please STOP claiming that you know more about what things mean than people who created symbols[edit]

Wikimedia Commons has had a longstanding problem of a fairly significant number of male users getting drunk, snapping a photo of their private parts with a cell phone or poorly-adjusted digital camera, and then uploading the results here. There is not really an analogous problem for female genitals (not to mention that Nopenis.svg could hardly be mistaken for a visual representation of a clitoris!), so that your latest round of edits to image description page Nopenis.svg was again inappropriate and misconceived. AnonMoos

I want all sexual things to be BANNED, because they are evil. Additionally, please optimize my final version of Image:Zakaz Pedałowania.svg Piast 14:47, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You may want that, but it wasn't the original intention or symbolic meaning of Image:Nopenis.svg, which had much more limited and specific purposes. I'll consider it... AnonMoos 14:50, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think that Image:Zakaz Pedałowania.svg is better, because it omits genital content completely. Piast 14:53, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It's better for your intended purpose, but the intended purpose of Nopenis.svg was a different purpose... AnonMoos 17:36, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Quasi-hijacking again[edit]

Image:569px-Againstsquare compasses.svg.png makes different artistic decisions than does your version Image:Againstsquare_compasses.svg, and there's room for both versions on Wikimedia Commons, so please don't try to get the other version deleted just because you like your own version better... AnonMoos 17:34, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Excuse for quasi-hijacking, but in this case quasi-hijacked file has badly created double file extension, namely *.svg.png in this case. Can you optimize SVG code of my SVG images uploaded to Commons? I have Windows Me and Inkscape refuses to work. I convert files to SVG using this online converter: http://vectormagic.stanford.edu/ Piast 18:07, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes it has a very unfortunate name -- the image creator took the rendered 569 pixel wide version of Image:Square compasses.svg, edited the image, and inserted "Against" into the image name without otherwise changing the name -- but that still doesn't mean that it should be necessarily deleted because you've uploaded an alternate artistic version of the symbol. AnonMoos 01:36, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. My streamlining of the SVG code in that one image file was not really automatized. I've seen Inkscape version 0.38 work on WinME, but you'll get best results from creating your graphic in vector form from the beginning (instead of tracing bitmaps). AnonMoos 01:49, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Vector[edit]

Thanks for mentioning http://vectormagic.stanford.edu/ -- it enabled me to finally improve Image:Williamsburg restroom sign cropped.svg , something I've been wanting to do for a long time. I further simplified Image:Zakaz Pedałowania.svg‎ using FontForge -- it's a specialized font-editing tool, not a general purpose vector editor, but it has effective specialized tools for simplifying vector outlines. New image[edit]

I think you may be interested in Image:Nojudith.jpg, a logo against religiously and sexually motivated violence. MrHedless 16:34, 11 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I reject such profanatory form of anti-violence logo. I will rather use something like this: Image:NoSatanism.svg or Image:Zakaz Ruchania.svg. Piast 17:49, 11 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
