Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name

CP-wiki[edit]

Hello, Petr. There is an international wikiproject on carnivorous plants, you might join us? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Carnivorous_plants Best regards, Denisoliver 23:20, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

These are some fantastic maps you have contributed; however, i am looking at the Sarracenia map and it doesn't show any range in Texas, which clearly has Sarracenia according to other maps (See the one on Sarracenia.com, for example). What is the reason for this discrepancy?

It would be great if there was a way to overlay the different CP range maps to get a composite map. I am trying to do it by resizing each map and making a bitmap in a separate layer but this has the limitation that: (1) it is a bitmap and (2) it's very hard to zoom the SVG to get a good match in scale.

Anyway, thank you again for this contribution.

SVG[edit]

Hi Petr,

I just noticed that you requested two source images (for Image:Sarracenia flower notitles.jpg and Image:Sarracenia pitcher anatomy basic.jpg). It looks like you already managed to convert them to SVG format. Do you still need the source images? I would be happy to send them to you. Thanks for all your image work! --NoahElhardt 15:43, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Can you post your email address or email me at the following address so that I can email you the files? barefoot2 AT gmail DOT com (of course replace the AT with @ and the DOT with .) --NoahElhardt 00:11, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Blank World Map (SVG)[edit]

Hello,

Thank you for your Blank World Map in the SVG format. This is a nearly-perfect template for converting all those png's into svg's. However, I noticed that Germany is not depicted has one country -- there's an East Germany and a West Germany. In Inkscape, I juste know how to fill in countries with different colors and write text -- that's it. Otherwise, I'd do it myself. Thank you for you time. --Zantastik 01:23, 11 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, but I haven't got enough time now. I just remed image Image:World_Map_Blank.svg, so it was not so much work. I will try it, when I will have enough time. --Petr Dlouhý 20:00, 14 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It's no matter. I asked the members of the Atelier graphique (Graphics workshop) on FR to help out, and they made Image:Carte du monde vierge (Allemagnes séparées).svg this. However, there's still one problem, just so you know. Each border has two lines -- for example, the border between China and Russia has one line for the china-russia border, and one for the russia-china border. This isn't a problem when the file is small, but once it's big, it's not ideal. But thanks for your work all the same! --Zantastik 23:06, 15 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, great job with this map. I'm trying to use it to show countries from GeoIP and I'd like to know if you have a list that matches country name and id of each country. It could really be helpfull. Thanks again for this map, it may save the project I'm in.--Marion 22:01, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If You mean Image:A_large_blank_world_map_with_oceans_marked_in_blue.svg then I am sory, because I just remade Image:World_Map_Blank.svg. You can try to find something helpful in the source of this map, but I haven't nothing else.--212.24.152.56 07:30, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Stylidiaceae range map?[edit]

Greetings! Excellent work with those range maps and the blank map. I downloaded inkscape but would need help figuring out how to input the range onto the blank map in order to make my own range map. There has to be some easier way than using that frustrating "calligraphy pen" tool, but I can't seem to figure it out. I'm much more comfortable Adobe products, but I don't have their vector drawing program. Do you think, if you have time, you could make a range map for Stylidiaceae based on this small map? The map is from Good, R. 1974. The Geography of the Flowering Plants, ed. 4. Longman, London. Or maybe let me in on the secret of how to use inkscape correctly! Thanks! --Rkitko 07:26, 21 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Map creation[edit]

Hi, I saw your conversion on Image:A large blank world map with oceans marked in blue.svg I wonder if you could made us the favor to vectorize Image:Location_of_Apurimac_region.png, thanks in advance --Andersmusician $ 04:21, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for answering so late. I didn't do the vectorization. It only remade one SVG to look like another PNG. I am sorry, but I have not enough time to do the vectorisation for you (it take much time).

Please give images good descriptions[edit]

I noticed you've uploaded Image:Byblis filifolia flower1.jpg and I thought I should turn your attention to a common error.
Please give some thought to writing a good description of uploaded images. This ensures that they can be used in more than one way. It also helps those that review and improve categories do a better job, which also ensures that images will get used in novel and interesting ways. Thanks, and happy editing! __ ABF __ 15:08, 9 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Petr Dlouhý!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File:A large blank world map with oceans marked in blue.svg[edit]

Hi, Petr. You have created a map called File:A large blank world map with oceans marked in blue.svg. Could you tell me what source did you use for it? I mean, from where did you take the information to draw the geographic lines? The division of countries? Thank you very much, --Lecen (talk) 00:23, 4 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I just recreated File:World_Map_Blank.svg to be blue and without frame.--Petr Dlouhý (talk) 10:18, 4 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I'm trying to use a variant of your map in a featured article at the English Wikipedia and the reviewer are demanding more info about it. --Lecen (talk) 13:34, 4 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
File:Darlingtonia distribution.svg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
