Is there any source for this coat of arms as the coat of arms of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel? Brunswick coats of arms generally have two gold lions in a red shield, not red lions in a gold shield. As far as I know, the rulers of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel did not use a single shield on its own, but used the usual Brunswick shield together with a number of other coat of arms as it was usual in this time. --FA2010 (talk) 08:52, 20 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement[edit]

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open![edit]

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Dear OwenBlacker,

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

  • In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

  1. 157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
  2. In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
  3. In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

We also sincerely thank to all 4070 voters for participating and we hope you will return for next year's contest in early 2015. We invite you to continue to participate in the Commons community by sharing your work.

File:Wappen Dexheim.svg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

HRE[edit]

Hello, you did map Holy Roman Empire 1000 map-en.svg? Why in 1000? Duchy of Bohemia was part of HRE only after 1004. Even Moravia belonged to Poland that time, it became part of Bohemia in 1019/1029 (uncertain dating). This should be reworked or deleted. Thak you for your answer. Jirka.h23 (talk) 19:16, 28 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Jirka.h23: I merely translated the French-language map Holy Roman Empire 1000 map-fr.svg, itself based on the German-language map HRR 10Jh.jpg. You are right — the original German map has borders that are more accurate and clearer. I don't know if I have a chance (or the expertise) to correct that but, if you make comments on the Talk: pages (and Holy Roman Empire 1000 map-de.png, which is also derived from the incorrect French borders) plus on Commons talk:WikiProject Atlas, then someone should be able to help you correct those. I note that Hexagon1 is also from the Czech Republic, so might be able to help you more easily :o) — OwenBlacker | talk 17:48, 30 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Another way could be to change date to for example 1030. Jirka.h23 (talk) 15:38, 1 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed; the original map was HRR 10Jh.jpg, so File:Holy Roman Empire 1000s map-en.svg or File:Holy Roman Empire 11th century map-en.svg would be better names, for example. — OwenBlacker | talk 20:14, 1 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@OwenBlacker: one year has passed and image is still not renamed? Thank you for your answer. Jirka.h23 (talk) 06:56, 17 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Jirka.h23: Feel free to propose a rename. — OwenBlacker (talk) 19:57, 17 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi OwenBlacker, I am a bored bot (this is kind of a computer program) that is watching the recent changes and tapping buttons like I did now.

Curious about the reason? Possibly not but I will tell you anyway:

  1. You edited User:OwenBlacker/common.css. Glad to see you coding in css! Have you ever considered becoming a MediaWiki hacker?
  2. Though, that change appears to introduce 2 new prettyCss issues — the page's status is now having ERRORS. Note that invalid or ambiguous code often has unwanted side effects like breaking other tools for you. If you cannot find out how to fix it, I suggest blanking the page for now.
  3. To help you understanding where the issues are, I have aggregated a report here and now. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask users experienced in css writing for help. But do not ask the bot's operators (chronically overwrought) unless you suspect an error of mine. If you prefer not getting spammed by me, you can opt-out reports by adding {{ValidationOptOut|type=all}} to your user page or cmb-opt-out anywhere on your your global user page on Meta. Good luck at Wikimedia Commons and happy hacking!

Ottoman calendar – caption[edit]

In your helpful caption to c:File:1911_Ottoman_Calendar.jpg, also copied in w:en:Rumi calendar, the interpretation of the Bulgarian line has a problem. Bulgaria in 1911 was on the Julian calendar, same numbers as in Greek; only the month and day names needed translation. The number 30 must therefore be something else. The only relevant explanation for it that I can think of is that it is the total number of days in the month. To be certain, we would need context – more pages of this calendar. However it should not be stated that the Bulgarian date was 30 April, as this is certainly not the case. — Justinbb (talk) 17:31, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

File:Wappen Oberharmersbach.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not.

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Flickypedia soft launch and a huge thank you[edit]

Dear fellow Commons photographer,

I hope this message finds you well. As you might already know, the Flickr Foundation has been busy creating a new Flickr-to-Commons bridge (“Flickypedia”) this year. After a successful demo at the GLAM Wiki Conference in Montevideo, the Flickr Foundation team is now inviting all members of the Commons Photographers User Group to be the first to review their alpha, reporting any technical issues or other feedback via the Flickypedia project talk page.

At the same time, this message is an opportunity for me to thank you for your trust and support over the past couple of years. Since 2017, we've grown into being one of the largest user groups in the Wikimedia universe. I've tremendously enjoyed interacting with all of our members when it came to joint photowalks at Wikimanias, virtual Zoom meetings where we covered a wide variety of photography topics, as well as our annual “Most memorable shot of the year”, among many other events. As I'm not running for an official position in our current board election, this will be my last message on behalf of the user group to you. Thanks for all the happy moments we shared together over the years! I hope you'll continue creating free images for the millions of people we serve through Wikipedia and Commons.

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 19:36, 9 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
