First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Hello, Orderinchaos!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Yeah tell me about it - I'm trying to clear out nearly 7 years of photos I've taken and get them up on Commons. Most of them are fairly low resolution and some of the Geraldton ones are even from a camera that died on the trip, but there seems to be value in having them here. Orderinchaos (talk) 14:33, 31 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've got a bit of a backlog myself. I do have some dating from about 2008 but still got 2010, 2011 and 2012 to upload. Bidgee (talk) 08:43, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
"there seems to be value in having them here" - absolutely! The more, the merrier. We can get picky about quality if and when our coverage significantly improves ... Mattinbgn (talk) 04:12, 4 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Autopatrol given[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. Bidgee (talk) 08:38, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Category discussion warning

Perth Domestic Airport has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Category:Churches in Western Australia by locality[edit]

Hi OIC. Not sure I agree with this edit. What is the rationale behind it? Churches in Western Australia can be categorised in many different ways and it makes sense to have a separate category for localities rather than lump them in the main one lest it get too cluttered. -- Mattinbgn (talk) 07:37, 24 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There was only two in the category, and neither was actually a locality (one was a hazily defined urban centre and the other was a large metropolitan area containing said urban centre). I looked around Australia and found an absence of such categories elsewhere. Orderinchaos (talk) 07:39, 24 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There are plenty of building type by locality categories for Australia and commons isn't as concerned as enwiki about populating cats so long as they are logical. I would have kept it and I am sure it will be recreated sooner or later. Deleted now anyway. -- Mattinbgn (talk) 07:55, 25 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Got no opposition to recreating it if it's needed later. The way it was being used though was not logical. Orderinchaos (talk) 12:37, 25 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

 • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
 • To perform file name swaps.
 • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

small request[edit]

if it's not too much to ask - when uploading is it at all possible to allocate the date to your upload? October 2013 in Perth, or January 2001 in western oz, whatever - Seeing the level of your enthusiasm should never be discouraged - not necessarily asking to go back what you have done - but there have been various attempts to try to get a sense of the date in wa content - for very good reason - in that commons actually has an amazing resource of 'then and now' of some wa features, and it really helps to show that we have such a rich resource when trying to convince that we are/have a resource that is of some import over and above some competing instituions who might actually have a very limited 'then' only - whereas we have a dimension to our collection (speaking loosely on that of course) - bahnfrend has some marvellous example of how it can be done (I am a little more erratic) - it also helps to get a sense of the collective effort that we cats can accumulate despite our impossihility to be herded in other ways - hope you have a sense of why and how it would be great if you can at all help in this, thanks also I suspect that the https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikipedia_Takes_Perth_Foreshore event actually is not outdone by any other instituion/organisation before the change - however time will see whether there was anything by anyone else or not no big deal if you dont want to or have a reason not to - just a suggestion - who knows maybe there will be a bot to solve the issue one day JarrahTree (talk) 07:24, 23 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

we have it easy, at least we have a neat tidy collection relatively speaking - Borobudur (part of my honours degree was about) has people dumping flickr material undescribed undated and generally wham bam - see you later... JarrahTree (talk) 07:40, 23 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Most of the stuff I've been uploading is clearing out my 2019-2020 archives. I've got a few days until semester starts so thought I'd use it to make some progress, especially as I've got more than 600 (!) 2021 images which I haven't even made a start on yet. Some of the stuff will be time-specific (especially given they keep rebuilding the CBD every 5 years) or event-specific - where I've been adding the tags - but a lot of the random suburb photos are more about documentation (not to mention the endless Curtin photos - I've got more), don't really change from year to year and I'd feel like I was cluttering up the time categories by adding them to those. Orderinchaos (talk) 13:46, 23 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Your endless Curtin photos are much appreciated - I just used one in service of good directions to illustrate what the front door of Common Ground looks like! Kabl00ey (talk) 12:31, 16 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
fair enough - thanks for replying - 5 years cbd change? nah ever 2 imho... as for organising archives - I have 2x dead macs with thousands of un-uploaded items, its the $$$ to extract the hard drives and contents that dont look possible in the near future... enjoy next semester - we truly live in innerresting times... in use vs shutdown[edit]

Photos taken with the last few weeks are related to the shutdown, at end of use. Other photographs of the level crossings and stations are just that therefore being in both categories are legitimate categorisations, as is the cross linking of the places being upgrades, removed and or replaced. Many of the names will be retained and continue to be in use afterwards Gnangarra 05:07, 23 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

My understanding is none of the level crossings will be retained as the lines will be elevated, but all stations between Carlisle and Beckenham other than Welshpool will be reopened in a new, unrecognisable form. There's a few awkward issues re categorisation presented by this - in particular, that from 2025 we'll have photos of 5 stations where the old and new aren't the same, and that our collective efforts to document the level crossings all post-dated this announcement so we have level crossings which existed for decades but have only ever been photographed now. Just wanted to note while here, I was kicking myself for not getting many Oats Street shots, and was extremely relieved when yours came online. A mixture of academic chaos (my students', this time, not mine) and plantar fasciitis severely limited my time and speed at getting out there. Orderinchaos (talk) 14:16, 23 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah its a complex mess, but there historical photos available as well. I have taken photos of everyone of the crossings that day still more to upload, its the images at various historical societies, slwa, and trove that I have seen still to come. For now putting all the recent in the one catch all and keeping naming the same will make it easier to sort later as each has features that will just be moved. Trying to refine now for what could be will mean loss of photos, by all means add to categories but please dont remove from the works cat until we have answers. Gnangarra 02:11, 24 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thinking a bit more we could have;
that would allow for each to be found through nesting former appearance, with an assumed future name being retained at about the same spot. As the level crossing are removed they can become Category:Defunct level crossings in Perth as are gathering enough of those now to warrant the subcat. Same for all the other stations except Welshpool which is just being removed. Instinct tells me South Metro Tafe and Oats Street Station will have a new relationship along with a bigger bus interchange than isnt in the current plans. Theres a lot other things happening around that point, new station, new name, new focal point in old industrial area like the City of Gosnells is planning for Maddington. Gnangarra 13:28, 24 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, that seems like it could work and makes sense. BTW I didn't know until recently that Gosnells moved across Verna Street at some point. Orderinchaos (talk) 21:34, 24 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yep Verna street was a level crossing, and the gosnells station was where the police station is now, if look at satellite images you can see the way the rail separate for a central station. I think the change came about during electrification, when they moved gosnells station to stalker road. Also Seaforth was added in later probably in 1970's when the area was developed from orchids to residential housing, I'll have do some more digging first and talk with local who were there when it happened.
