West Indies data lacking

[edit]

Hello. I noticed that on your version of Lynn's IQ map the data concerning the West Indies and some isles in Oceania was absent compared to the PNG version. Is it normal?
Moreover, I would advise you not to split Sudan, because when this research was done it was still one country. Veverve (talk) 19:28, 22 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Veverve thank you for your review. Data have been computed according to Brainstats. I will fix the issue with Sudan. As for missing regions I suppose they were not in the original dataset. Olivello 08:56, 27 December 2019

Congo-Kinsasha and Congo-Brazzaville are present on Brainstats, why are they not on the SVG map? Moreover, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (now "North Macedonia") is also on Brainstat but not on your map. Same for the Swaziland, Liberia, Côte d'Ivoire, Solomon Islands, Trinidad and Tobago, The Bahamas, and many more. Seems to me you overlooked some data. You should complete your map with the data your forgot; I suggest using the the PNG version along with checking each item (country). Veverve (talk) 11:36, 27 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
As for the smaller countries (e.g. isles) you should make a zoom (example 1, example 2 (Estonia and Moldova above Norway under a transparent white)). Veverve (talk) 12:44, 27 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
If the countries are still too small to see which colour they are even with a zoom, I suggest adding the exact IQ estimation next to each of those countries which are too small (rough example). Veverve (talk) 14:33, 27 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The most annoying with the former PNG version was the legend: it did not make sense. As for some of the missing countries you have to know that their score was determined using a doubtful methodology. It turns out the Brainstats table data are from IQ and Global Inequality (2002). I will use data from IQ and The Wealth of Nations (2006), only using the former version for filling in gaps. By the way I have no better way than manually creating the table in electronic format, so do not hesitate if you want to help with it. Olivello 09:15, 28 December 2019

I am unfortunately (as can be seen in my "rough example") not a cartographer at all so I cannot help.
Once you are done, you should absolutely explain in details in the "Description" section of your map: 1) the problem(s) you have with the PNG version, 2) you methodology, 3) the source for your data (I am very confused, for the current SVG map, is it IQ and The Wealth of Nations or Bainstat?), 4) the source of the SVG map you used (unless you drew it yourself which I doubt, you probably used File:BlankMap-World.svg).

[edit]

I see you uploaded a new version of your map and added the sources you used. However, the use of maps with a copyright not compatible with commons is forbiden on Wikimedia Commons. You used a map from [1], and I believe their licensing is not compatible with commons. Please either redo your map using a map with a compatible license, e.g. File:BlankMap-World-Sovereign Nations.svg, or provide a proof in the description that the maps from SimpleMaps is under a license compatible with commons; or else your map will be deleted due to copyright violation. I still encourage you and do not want to devaluate your work in any way; so far, you are doing a great job. Veverve (talk) 20:56, 28 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Please note that I changed the map I initially recommended, as I think File:BlankMap-World-Sovereign Nations.svg would be perfect for the task you want to accomplish.
I initially thanked you for your edit, but I noticed you were being dishonest by saying your source was Github: the map you use is copyrighted by Simple Maps and you cannot simply pretend to re-license things. From what I see the Simple Maps maps are copyrighted, so your only choice is to redo your map using a map with a license compatible with commons, e.g. File:BlankMap-World-Sovereign Nations.svg. Veverve (talk) 21:55, 28 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Also, please answer me if you need further information, as I am only here to help you. As a reminder, pretending to re-license copyrighted material is illegal. Veverve (talk) 22:04, 28 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for fixing this so quickly! Veverve (talk) 23:07, 28 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Feedback

[edit]

As a sidenote, on the new version of the map:

  • Why isn't French Guyana left in grey like you did in the previous versions?
  • You forgot to put a colour on the Swaziland (now called "Eswatini").
  • Why isn't Greenland left in grey like you did in the previous versions? Veverve (talk) 23:32, 28 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
you wrote "PR,Puerto Rico,84", but Puerto Rico is in the "> 95" colour. Veverve (talk) 23:47, 29 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
What are those blue islands in the West Indies? Veverve (talk) 23:52, 30 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

IQ Map

[edit]

The Map you had made with increments of 5 with great or equal to makes more sense. Starting at 80, 85, 90, 95 and so on. Why the change? Also, where did the data for Serbia come from as it did not exist during 2002? The 2006 study shows Serbia as Average IQ 89. https://books.google.fr/books?hl=fr&id=rA8RAQAAIAAJ&focus=searchwithinvolume&q=Serbia

Also, the same researchers published a 2012 followup called Intelligence that updates IQ scores with correction found in the previous years. https://lesacreduprintemps19.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/intelligence-a-unifying-construct-for-the-social-sciences-richard-lynn-and-tatu-vanhanen.pdf

Would you be able to create a map based on that data set as well? I see that you are good at generating them!
