First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.
  • Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.
Made a mistake?
  • Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
  • Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

A file that you uploaded to Wikimedia Commons from Flickr, File:Dana priest pulitzer.jpg, was found available on Flickr by an administrator or reviewer under the license Noncommercial (NC), No derivative works (ND), or All Rights Reserved (Copyright), which isn't compatible with Wikimedia Commons, per the licensing policy. The file has been deleted. Commons:Flickr files/Appeal for license change has information about sending the Flickr user an appeal asking for the license to be changed. Only Flickr images tagged as BY (CC BY), BY SA (CC BY-SA), CC0 (CC0) and PDM (PDM) are allowed on Wikimedia Commons. If the Flickr user has changed the license of the Flickr image, feel free to ask an administrator to restore the file, or start an undeletion request.

I've just contacted the image owner by commenting on the Flickr page where the image appears:

Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

I sent complete documentation of e-mail correspondence with the original image author and her representatives to the permissions@wikimedia address. Thank you for your diligence in enforcing the Wikimedia Foundation's intellectual property standards for images, but this was all done properly and the image should not be deleted. I explained in my response that the permission statement didn't meet our requirements, and I filled out a statement that would meet our requirements. I haven't yet received a response, as far as I know. You were copied. IT was sent 23 March 2013. Hi. We also need verification of license for the following:

File:Scott Shane at UC-Berkeley.jpg
File:Jo Becker.jpg
While some of these images have been present without verification of license for some time, I see a few of them are relatively new. If they are deleted prior to the processing of permission you have already sent or that you send, there should be no issues as these are routinely restored once permission is processed.
I would really encourage you to read en:Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission and en:Wikipedia:Declaration of consent for all enquiries. We are not able to accept images that are donated to us unless they are licensed under a compatible license. I'm afraid that quite often celebrities who donate images do balk when discovering that the images they donate can be used by anyone anywhere, even commercially. We recommend very specific language to make this clear up front, but even where that language is used sometimes there are later issues. Unfortunately, people don't always read the fine print!
If you do send or have sent a compatible license, please put {{subst:OP}} on the description pages beneath the tag notifying that license needs verification. This can help delay premature deletion. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 12:34, 1 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
