Thanks for uploading Image:Imagine1.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{Cc-by-sa-2.5}} to release it under the Creative Commons or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Is this image legal?[edit]

I am not sure about the license of the following image: Image:060815 f 005.jpg. I suspect that it is copywrited. I dont know exactly what to do when I found a irregular image, so I am asking you to investigate.

Thank you very much. --Carlosar 20:36, 15 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: COM:DEL and stuff[edit]

Hey Nilfanion,

Don't worry, you don't seem stupid at all. MediaWiki is a tricky beast to learn and I've made a fool of myself many times in attempting to understand it. :)

I don't think it's disorganised... We just keep bureaucracy to an extreme minimum. :P It's true, we have no written-down blocking policy. But actually I have seen very few legitimate complaints about blocking. The few I have seen have been handled well.

I think because everyone usually has a 'home wiki' where they learn most of the wiki culture, including what's a blockable fence, what's vandalism, what's trolling etc, that's why we don't have a written down one.

If anything we probably don't block enough - users who repeatedly upload copyrighted/unsourced material are the biggest problem and they tend to get pages of warnings. After a few warnings, I think a short block is better to get their attention.

Anyway...that is the reason some stuff isn't written down, to minimise bureaucracy. And, you know, we're overworked and underpaid. :P

I guess we will have an admin board in the very, very near future, since several people have made comments like this recently. In fact, as soon as someone bothers to make one and announce it...

Keep playing around, if you have any questions my talk page is always open.

Commons--A Refuge for those Disenchanted with en.wp. :)
Perhaps, a short block on Commons would be more effective if combined with a block on their "home"? Hmm, I can see that *not* working for many reasons. One, many people don't indicate what their home wiki is. Two, it would require a level of inter-wiki trust and communication that simply does not exist at the moment. Many projects are almost fierce in their determination to allow users to edit who have been blocked on other wikis. A Commons block is not a punishment, but like a bucket of water in the face to finally make them pay attention to what we're saying. I don't really see blocks elsewhere serving that purpose. Besides which, blocks here are effective enough -- it's just there probably isn't enough of them. :) pfctdayelise (translate?) 15:21, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

Maybe you know the answer to this? Are the images used here [1] PD? They could fill in some of the gaps on the typhoon pages which are really hard to find. For example, this [2] one says NRL Monterrey, but I cannot find anything about that in NRL's archives. Good kitty 13:53, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Nilfanion,

Thanks a lot for doing that work! However, in your next uploads, I think it would be better not to say "Original image Image:Palestine occupationXX.jpg". The old image will be removed in any case, and now everybody who checks the image page at the Wikipedias will see "Palestine occupation". In any case, thanks again for your work. I can't find a proper document where they have released their images. I trust it to be true however, cause the band dumps all their music on mp3, promotes file sharing trough P2P,... WWI-era images[edit]

Hello, I see you zappped three images (I, II and III) as unsourced. They did have the unscourced tag on them too even though they are part of a larger deletion discussion (as it says here). While I like to see finally some input in the matter I'd hoped that the entire matter could be resolved in its entirety. Cheers, Scoo 07:27, 15 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If it's not too much of a hassle, please do. Certainly there is a risk that they must migrate to en.wiki under some kind of {{Old-might-be-copyrighted}}, but I'm hopeful. If you have an opinion, please do voice it (the interest so far in the matter sweeps one off one's feet ;). Regards, Scoo 09:22, 15 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In general renaming of users can be requested at Commons:Changing username. As the User Albedo exists already (see Special:Contributions/Albedo) it is not possible renaming you to that new name. In case you own both accounts it is also not possible merging them. So sorry we can't help you. Arnomane 09:27, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Including address[edit]

Regarding, Captain John Palliser Elementary School. I think its important that for all pictures of buildings, we include the precise address of the building. We should be providing the maximum amount of information about pictures we provide (I uploaded the school pictures). For instance, many schools have multiple addresses over the course of their life. Sometimes, they're demolished and rebuilt, with the same name, close to, but at a new location. We should keep track precisely of which/what building we have a picture of. If I had more time, I'ld be even more precise in the location of what's in the particular picture, but the quickest approach, is to copy/paste the address. I'm not including this as "contact information". I do agree with you that we don't want to include contact info, but that wasn't my purpose (note, I didn't have stuff like phone numbers, fax, email, etc...). --Rob 05:28, 17 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

{{Duplicate}} is only for exactly identical images[edit]

I saw that you replaced the template duplicate by the template superseded (e.g. Image:Zar.jpg) with the comment {{Duplicate}} is only for exactly identical images. That is wrong. In the first line of the template you can read This image is an exact duplicate or scaled-down version of blabla. Would you please consider this in the future? --jed 06:13, 17 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You did the same thing with Image:Senegal coa.gif. I contest the idea that two images in different file formats cannot be duplicates: An indexed GIF and an indexed PNG are AFAIK exactly identical in terms of data. -- Himasaram 12:49, 17 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You did the same with Image:Bathyporeia pelagica.png and others. Why would you keep a low res .png, if a high quality (low compression) and high res .jpg version of the same file is uploaded? The .jpg was the original output b.t.w. Lycaon 21:57, 17 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

{{Duplicate}} is only for exact dupes and scaled-down versions. Any variation (explicitly including different filetypes) has to be nominated for deletion through COM:DEL. I am just replacing the incorrect duplicate tag with a correct superseded tag. If you want them deleted, nominate them (add {{Delete}} and follow that process. However, I am not going to speedily delete such images and nor should any other admin following the current guidelines.--Nilfanion 22:02, 17 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to direct your attention to Image:Canada quebec.svg which is a special case, since it is identical with the very first revision of Image:Flag of Quebec.svg (18:46, 15 November 2005). I made a note about it under the duplicate tag. --Himasaram 13:37, 23 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think I'm very confused by a probably very humourous thing you did. You changed {{Hurricane auto track map}} from PD to PD-magic. As this concerns a huge amount of images, could you please explain why you did this? PD-magic is IMO a very confusing template that should not be allowed. Cheers! Siebrand 07:47, 25 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, the template is a daft joke that belongs in Commons version of en:WP:BJAODN. I picked the hurricane template as all but a very few of the images tagged with it are my own work. For now, PD-magic includes the fine print of PD-Self (the correct tag for those images) so isn't very harmful. However, I'll rv that change soon, don't worry ;)--Nilfanion 10:34, 25 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thanks for the explanation. Please be aware that changing a template that is used on many, many pages requires a change for those many pages that is processed through the job queue. I recommend not be participate in too many jokes like this as it may create precedence... Siebrand 11:03, 25 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I won't be daft in future. Thankfully the Commons job queue is generally light. As an aside, I think it may be worthwhile to subst the hurricane template, as it has been incorrectly modified by users wanting an update to a specific storm...--Nilfanion 11:15, 25 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Allianz-Arena[edit]

Hello Nilfanion, you removed the nld tag from these two images, commenting "license fine Permanent structure in de...":

Why would not need a licence for these images? To me, they seem like interior shots of an copyrighted architectural work. It's private ground, too. Deleting "Image:Nyhus Pappa 04.jpg" etc.[edit]

You apparently deleted my uploaded file Image:Nyhus Pappa 04.jpg because of a copyvio book scan. This file was made by me as the author, illustrator and graphic designer of this Norwegian children's book, and I consider the image in low resolution to be of no violation against copyright laws of the publishing house. I therefore hope we can keep similar files under lisence self2|GFDL|cc-by-sa-2.5,2.0,1.0. Or am I misinformed? ́́--Wolfmann 18:13, 30 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

hmm, the pictures are completely identical. The fileformat shouldn't really make a difference.

I just read the deletion guidelines again and it only states that vector graphics don't supersede normal bitmaps, which is of course true. But nothing is said there between two different bitmap file types. I would think that the file compression shouldn't make a difference. ;)

I mean I don't wanna be a pain in the *** and all, and don't really care that much if the picture gets deleted now or in a week, but you really made me curious about this. How do I supply the licence? I got it from the imagebank of the mio-tech official homesite. I asked in an e-mail specifically if I was allowed to use the image on wikipedia and I was confirmed that all images in that database are for public use. I do understand that wikimedia is very strict in it's policy about copyrights, but I thougt in this case that I did enough to verify that the picture was publishable. I'll give you the link to the 'Press section' of the website: you can find the link to the imagebank here. If you know how to gain the correct copyright information, please let me know. I more or less agree (to me, it is sufficient to know the page and the canton, a direct link is a "detail for convienence"), but please don't tag the other pictures I have uploaded from Picswiss, I hope I can fix the problem. The filenames match those of Picswiss, the only problem being the "Picswiss_" I have added, which afaik will be difficult to process without going through all images with a bot.... Dake 10:23, 7 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I somehow fixed your problem, see Image:Picswiss BS-46-03.jpg (do not forget to purge). I have added in the template a search link to Google images that uses the filename, but the user must remove the "Picswiss_" to make a correct search. This will be enhanced when the meta:StringFunctions will be available on Commons, as it will be easy to remove that prefix. (don't know when it will be available). Otherwise if this is not satisfying, I would be forced to go with a bot through all the pictures I have uploaded yet... The pictures that I will upload from now on won't have this issue. Dear Nilfanion: I would like to thank you for your support in my recent RfA which passed 20 to 1. I really appreciate the trust you've placed in me. Please help me be a better admin by giving me feedback when you think I need it, and praise when you think I've earned it. I am glad you gave me that tip, and that it went in the permanent record because it's very important. I look forward to noming or supporting your en:wp adminship soon. Take care and thanks again. ++Lar: t/c 03:41, 12 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I chose LEGO to illustrate my thank you messagess, because LEGO is a system that we build things with. Commons holds the building blocks that other wikis use to make great things. Without Commons images and media, other wikis would be much poorer. Let's help build the greatest freely available intellectual collection the world has ever known... together.

Hi, I'm Bawolff (wikinews admin), I was wondering if the image you deleted - Image:Inflatable-boats-from-the-gree.jpg with comment copyvio non-commercial, was just deleted because it couldn't be used commercially, if you could temporarily undelete it for wikinews (until I upload locally), as we used it in several articles, and we can have non-comercial images. Hi. A few days ago you have deleted a pic I had uploaded (namely Image:RobertSmith SimonGallup Imola2004.jpg) for copyvio TV screenshot (see [5]). I'd like to explain that pic: it is not a tv screenshot, but i took it live during the show, from the audience, pointing to the big screens that are next to the stage, because i liked the particular image. Redlinks on Commons[edit]

Hi! When a picture used on my home project (nn:) was deleted, I noticed that there was still at least one page here on Commons that used it -- in other words, a page with a red link to the image [7]. This does not look good. I highly recommend delinking these things at Commons, since as far as I know, there's no CommonsTicker for Commons itself. --Ranveig 10:13, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

please check usage before deletions[edit]

Hi Nilfanion, in the last few days you deleted some images of the soviet space program, but you forgot to check usage of those images before deleting, resulting in many broken images in other projects. So please check usage before deletions, and remove the images that are supposed to deletions from pages in other projects which use them. thank you, 217.132.203.93 13:15, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It would help if you had a user account here then I could reply to you directly and stated which project you "come" from. All the major projects have a CommonsTicker (with the sole exception of en.wikipedia), which is designed to let commons admins get along with their work without worrying about the orphaning - the local editors can do that. In the case of the Soviet images those were all liable to speedy deletion and have been for the past 2 months (due to a policy change), so projects had plenty of warning.--Nilfanion 18:11, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image:D'Annunzio in Fiume.jpg[edit]

Why was Image:D'Annunzio in Fiume.jpg deleted? Given the date of the event, it is almost certainly public domain (unless it was not published at the time, which given its nature seems unlikely).

Thanks for the info about getting email when my user talk is hit, I'll turn that on.
So, in short, the issue is that we have to show that the image was published at the time? I'm quite certain it was, but that is going to be tough to prove. I'll try to track one down (possibly not the same one) for which we can be sure of that. - en:Jmabel | talk 19:59, 22 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Flickrreview[edit]

Moin Nilfarion. User:Melanom asked this already further above. You answered him, but you missed his point. Why have admins to do the check in the Category:Flickr review needed? Why couldn't a automated bot driven by a trustworthy user do this checks? The bot only has to access the Flickr side which is linked on the image description and to check the licence tag, which is easily accessible through the source code of that page. You then only have to add some functionality to be sure the two photos are the same, but in the end this should work more accurate than checking by hand through admins. --::Slomox:: >< 17:32, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There is indeed a bot working now on the category. The maintenance pagse need some updating to reflect that. Admin (or some other class of trusted user) backup is still needed due to the different images; see Commons:Administrators/Requests and votes/FlickreviewR.
As luck would have it I today found an image which was bot-reviewed. Then my question is obsolete. Thanks for the answer. I updated the text in the category. --::Slomox:: >< 14:43, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image deletion - why?[edit]

I see you have deleted Image:Aydilge.jpg reasoning that it had no source, whereas I HAVE put the source link and it had proper licensing as well. Haven't you seen the source or what? Thank you in advance for your answer. --Teemeah 14:21, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, thank you. You're right, the picture url has changed since I checked it for the last time. I had written to her publisher at the time of requesting the photo and they agreed to publish it under a free licence (saying "whatever, we get promoted outsdide of Turkey" ) altough at that time it was not yet required to send the permission anywhere and the exact license type was not specified (just that it would be a free licence - but not promotional image licence). So - providing that I attach the permission to use it under free licence (with a translation of the letter), can I upload the photo again (or another)? --Teemeah 17:30, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Question about linking to other languages[edit]

Hello. I have recently started writing Urdu articles for Wikipedia. I have some questions I wonder if you could answer for me.

1. When I make a new article I add the inter-language link to other the new Urdu page so you can see the English, French, Bengali version of the same page. But to add Urdu to their pages I have to go to each page and write ur:xxxx . Is there a better way to do it then going to 15 different sites and writing that? It would save time I'm sure. 2. My Tayaji and Chachaji are very old but they enjoy adding to this site. But the Urdu font used is set so tiny. Could we vote to increase the size as really it is almost unreadable for out older readers/contributers. And the Urdu font being so fine and dainty and so full of subtle movements an increase in size can only diminish the strain on all of our eyes. :) 3. Is there anyway a more pleasing Urdu font could be used? 4. Why are numbers on Urdu Wikipedia Western Style Numbers? Would it be possible to vote to change them to Urdu style numbers?

Welcome to the Volapük Wikipedia! I'm an administrator there; if there's anything I can do to help, let me know. I admit I'm curious: What kind of Commons-related work do you do that also affects the Volapük Wikipedia? --Smeira 20:59, 6 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks[edit]

For getting rid of the horses - I was wondering what it was about! Regards --Herby talk thyme 08:19, 8 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of images in Category:Unknown[edit]

Hi,

I only delete images which are in clear violation of Commons policies. Keeping these for a week encourage people to upload more images without following policies. Actually, I do this following pfctdayelise suggestion. See her message. Regards, Yann 22:35, 8 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The proofs that the images are free have to be given by the uploader. Hopefully, I don't have to prove that the image is a copyright violation, which is rather difficult, that why I don't tag deletion as "copyvio". I think therefore tagging deletion as "no source or/and no valid licence" (or "against policies" if you prefer) is the right thing to do. Regards, Yann 22:52, 8 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

NilfaBot[edit]

Hi! Your bot just tagged some images with {{Flickrreview}}, although I just reviewed them. I guess it's because my tag is written with first letter captialized {{Flickrreview}}. Example: Image:295336413_07a5f84c43.jpg Enricopedia 22:35, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That's it. Everything reverted. Enricopedia 22:54, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nilfabot edit[edit]

This edit broke the licensing transclusion. I assume that the bot is making similar edits to other images, but haven't checked. Cheers, - BanyanTree 22:41, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It happened here as well. Is this expected behaviour? Jkelly 22:59, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Damn, this case sensitivity issue is a pain in the neck. Of course, I don't need to inspect the images to know cc-by and cc-by-sa are invalid licenses (Flickr uses the 2.0 variant after all) so these breakages will be fixed when the licenses are reviewed, but that's no excuse. I've stopped the bot run for now and will resume it tomorrow. For now I've created redirects at the targets of the bad edits...--Nilfanion 23:05, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nice kludge. Jkelly 23:18, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Have fun!! Cary "Bastiqe" Bass demandez 02:20, 13 February 2007 (UTC) [reply]

This is an Image I took myself, as the license and the caption clearly state, and was never posted to flicker. Bye. --G.dallorto 17:57, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

pictures from Daplaza[edit]

Hello, I have seen your message on my pictures pages Image:Crabe_DSC00639.JPG ; Image:Chaînes_DSC00637.JPG ; Image:Chaînes_DSC00638.JPG and I would like to answer you that : I have some pictures on Flickr but those ones does not come originaly from there, and I confirme that I am the author. (... sorry for my english) Thank you Daplaza 17:59, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

NilfaBot - Error?[edit]

Look at this change. The Bot set {{flickrreview}} after the template {{Flickr-change-of-license}} is set. --Atamari 19:27, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This is not an error, flickr-change-of-license is a weaker form of this tagging system; deprecation of it will be worthwhile.--Nilfanion 19:32, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted Image[edit]

You have deleted my image Pasquino 02. Can you please tell me why. I'm new here and don't know if I made a mistake.

That maybe, that I forgot the license. I took the photo by myself so it's the same license like for Pasquino 01. Thank you for restoring it. --Pippo-b 00:38, 14 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
