Hello, NikNaks!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Heya, Your changes on the Queen's Colour for the Royal New Zealand Navy have moved the Union flag, crest, and starts closer so they are almost touching. This is incorrect. I am looking at the Royal Warrant signed by the Queen and there is a space between the three objects. As indicated in the earlier image. This is the closest revision that looks like the copy I have

Cheers Brian (talk) 05:32, 12 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There are some images of it on the net. The southern cross appears to have been narrowed because of the proportions, and the Queen's cypher is also smaller. That may be some help. Fry1989 eh? 06:34, 12 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
How is that? NikNaks talk - gallery - wikipedia 20:22, 12 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I got no complaints :) Fry1989 eh? 20:29, 12 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Back?[edit]

Just checking. :) -- とある白い猫 ちぃ? 21:45, 14 January 2012 (UTC)

Yes indeed. It's back to school, though, so it'll only be an hour or so a day, if that. NikNaks talk - gallery - wikipedia 21:01, 15 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Aw... Let me know when you have time for the super-national bodies. :) -- とある白い猫 ちぃ? 21:11, 20 January 2012 (UTC)

Can you add a circle for the w:en:Prüm Convention? RobiH (talk) 19:13, 1 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No reaction? RobiH (talk) 13:29, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry! I did read this and discussed it briefly with the person that requested the diagram in the first place. My feeling is that that map is already over-complicated and not particularly easy to read, so if the Prum were to be added, some others might have to be removed. If you'd like to suggest a new combination of bodies entirely, including the Prum but without some of the ones on this, I'd be happy to make it. NikNaks talk - gallery - wikipedia 20:09, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Good point. In return for adding the Prüm circle, you might want to remove the United Nations circle. It was useless, anyway, as it did not cover all UN members. RobiH (talk) 20:27, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The Euler does not contain all the NATO members either, so perhaps that's not such a concern! Anyhow, the central ones would be better to remove some of. NATO, the Euro mint, for instance. I'm not sure what sort of article this would be for, so if you could shed some light, it might become obvious which ones are more relevant and should be kept. NikNaks talk - gallery - wikipedia 20:35, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, we need many many more circles to properly reflect all columns in both tables of w:en:Multi-speed Europe. RobiH (talk) 20:54, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It would be better to have more diagrams with fewer circles in each to show the different relationships, or else, as the article already seems to be marked, it becomes too complicated and confusing for people to use or interpret. NikNaks talk - gallery - wikipedia 11:33, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Then have a look at this for proof that integrating more entitites do not necessarily mean a more complicated graphics. RobiH (talk) 21:05, 27 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If anything, that serves to justify my reasoning. That diagram is a mess of colours and labels and is horrifying to look at! Less complex is best. NikNaks talk - gallery - wikipedia 21:13, 27 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi[edit]

I hope you're not offended if I ask this, but would you mind if we deleted File:Seal of the Governor of Pennsylvania (alternate).svg? I made the second alternate closer to the source, and I don't think we need two from the one source. Up to you ofcourse, and thanks for making my requests. 21:26, 19 February 2012 (UTC)

Of course! I wasn't expecting you to keep both. I was just having a hard time interpreting it, so made alternatives. Go ahead! :P NikNaks talk - gallery - wikipedia 07:45, 20 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Air Ensign[edit]

Can you effect your new version on File:Civil Air Ensign of Australia (1935-1948).svg? I can't change the colours of the stars of your latest change. Fry1989 eh? 00:47, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, yes. I hardcoded the colour of the stars. If you try opening the file in Notepad and editing the definitions for the stars (helpfully labelled Star5 for the five-pointed and Star7 for the seven), changing #fff (white) to #f6cd00 (the yellow you've used). Have a go, and if you have trouble, I'll do it, but being able to change the colours of things this way (especially flags) might stop some of the other editors having a go at you with the increased file size! NikNaks talk - gallery - wikipedia 18:52, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, but I had no luck, as you can see from my tests. There are only three "#fff"s I could see in the code, and they didn't change the stars. Also the yellow you gave me looks much darker then what I have for the stars on the older ensign. Fry1989 eh? 20:35, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
At second look, maybe it's just my eyes that make it look darker. Fry1989 eh? 20:46, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You're looking in the <defs> section at the top of the file? That's where the stars are. NikNaks talk - gallery - wikipedia 21:01, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ahh, I didn't scroll sideways :P Thanks Fry1989 eh? 21:31, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent! Forgive me, but I have, while you were uploading, made one very subtly different version which is now completely mathematically exact. Which, hopefully, is a good thing. If you don't want to spend more time uploading another version, I'll happily do it! NikNaks talk - gallery - wikipedia 21:34, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ah no, I might as well now that I've learned :) Fry1989 eh? 21:48, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like you're going to have to after all. I did it exactly like I did last time, but now the Southern Cross wont turn yellow. Fry1989 eh? 21:53, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I made a bad. Try with the new file. I had it making the white stars white twice. Just in case. Or something. Sorry. Giving you the runaround today! NikNaks talk - gallery - wikipedia 21:59, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There we go :) Btw just a heads up, I'm gonna make another seals request soon, gonna try and get through the last governor's seals I have in my bookmarks. There's no rush, you don't even have to take 'em, but if you see any you like, greatly appreciated. Fry1989 eh? 22:10, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well, if no-one takes them this side of Easter, I might take a crack at them then. Until then, I've got school to drain my energy, so I doubt I'll get to them unless they're really straightforward! NikNaks talk - gallery - wikipedia 22:13, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Rightio, well, they should be straightforward, Wyoming's deffinately is. but anyhow, there's really no rush. We've not had them on Wikipedia since the beginning of the project, we can wait a month or two :P. Have a good time back at school :) Fry1989 eh? 22:32, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. How are things going? Fry1989 eh? 17:20, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, this must be a joke!? There's really no need to make a copy of this file with marginal smaller dimension. If this is importend(?) overwrite the original... -- πϵρήλιο 02:22, 9 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I do understand your point, but the request at the GL was to make the image have transparent padding at the top and bottom to make it fit better in the article. The ratio of sides is different, but if there's a way of fixing the article to avoid needing two versions, please do go ahead and delete this file, but only if the article author is satisfied. What kind of updates? NikNaks talk - gallery - wikipedia 11:43, 3 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm? There were several graphical problems you were going to fix. :)
  • UN line being less than visible under Vatican
  • Thickness problem of the NATO circle
  • The dotted lines of Eurozone may better touch the full circle. It should look more like an extension.
  • Moving items around so that they are less confusing.
  • You may want to upload/prepare a Croatia version since it is acceding in 2013.

In the File:World Muslim Population (Pew Forum).svg map, Sudan needs to be updated.[edit]

Hi

In the File:World Muslim Population (Pew Forum).svg map, Sudan (excluding South Sudan) needs to be updated.

South Sudan was added with the correct color bar showing the percentage range of Muslims between 5–25% (Muslims make up less than 10% of the population of South Sudan), but the color bar of Sudan was forgotten to be updated, because after the independence of South Sudan (which had the bulk of the animist and Christian population in Sudan before its secession), the percentage of Muslims automatically became more than 90%. The obsolete color bar of Sudan reflects the percentage of Muslims between 75–90%, when South Sudan was still part of Sudan. Now for Sudan, the color bar showing the percentage range of Muslims between 90–100% needs to be shown.

Thank you.

A2D2 Talk 21:58, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The very notion of having South Sudan on that map is rather erroneous, since there is no data for it or the "new" Sudan, only the combination of the two. The data is taken from a specific report in 2009, so I think it should really have Sudan combined as one country.
However, if there is new data from the Pew Forum that specifically mentions the two new countries, please link me to it so I can cite it on the image, and I will make the change. Thanks! NikNaks talk - gallery - wikipedia 22:13, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I did actually reverse the File:World Muslim Population Pew Forum.png to the state it was in 2011, before the actual independence of South Sudan and new colorings, after I saw in the text and on the map, that is based on the reference the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life report in 2009. No Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life report for 2012 and 2013, reflecting the changes have yet been realeased. The lack of any sourced data about South Sudan is also another problem, as it is a new country, and resources are very hard to find.
Would it be impertinent of me to ask you to revert the File:World Muslim Population (Pew Forum).svg map to the pre-independence status? Unlike the png map, the svg map is not bound and restricted to a particular year, so it is open to change in the future and can be updated when new data is published in the future (hopefully not so distant future).
A2D2 Talk 22:48, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The existing SVG should be copied to something like "... Pew Forum (2009)" when it is superseded, but it should still show the data as it is/was. However, it should reflect the data that is available, not be a combination of data and conjecture.
The PNG should really be reverted to the 30 May 2011 revision, since that was the correct geography at the time of the data collection, and the SVG changed to reflect that, too. Do you agree? NikNaks talk - gallery - wikipedia 23:13, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for my mistake (I live in a timezone two hours ahead of UTC/GMT, and my carelessness is due to tiredness). I did discover my mistake after I clicked on the map, I thought I was reverting to the 30 May 2011 version, but reverted to the 29 December 2011 version instead. I have reverted to the 30 May 2011 revision, and the most recent change should appear now (or at least in a couple of minutes) in Wikimedia Commons - the change already appears in some of the Wikipedia articles with this map. Yes I agree that the SVG version should be changed to the pre-independence status to reflect that as well. I personally don't know how to change SVG files, that is why I asked you with the request.
A2D2 Talk 23:45, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
