Exact duplicate means exact duplicate

Hi. We have had this conversation previously. The speed deletion process is for exact duplicates, not close matches. If someone has purposefully cropped, and used that crop, then who am I to just ignore that choice and delete? For non-exact matches, the process is a DR so the community makes the decision.  — billinghurst sDrewth 10:32, 9 May 2021 (UTC)

Come on. Roughly the same crop is not exact. What is the purpose of removing choice from people? Do you understand why the duplicates policy states exact, and not roughly the same crop. It says exact and means exact for duplicates. Anything else goes before the community. The purpose of the policy is not to remove choice, just to get rid of exact duplicates, and primarily it is a solution for a caching issue.  — billinghurst sDrewth 08:09, 10 May 2021 (UTC)

Hi Neveselbert (mobile), I am a bored bot (this is kind of a computer program) that is watching the recent changes and tapping buttons like I did now.

Curious about the reason? Possibly not but I will tell you anyway:

  1. You edited User:Neveselbert (mobile)/common.css. Glad to see you coding in css! Have you ever considered becoming a MediaWiki hacker?
  2. Though, that change appears to introduce 2 new prettyCss issues — the page's status is now having warnings. Note that invalid or ambiguous code often has unwanted side effects like breaking other tools for you. If you cannot find out how to fix it, I suggest blanking the page for now.
  3. To help you understanding where the issues are, I have aggregated a report here and now. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask users experienced in css writing for help. But do not ask the bot's operators (chronically overwrought) unless you suspect an error of mine. If you prefer not getting spammed by me, you can opt-out reports by adding {{ValidationOptOut|type=all}} to your user page or cmb-opt-out anywhere on your your global user page on Meta. Good luck at Wikimedia Commons and happy hacking!

Re: Request

@Neveselbert: My apologies, I only saw your message today as I have had some personal matters that have kept me away from Wikipedia for the past week. Unfortunately I don't have time to do any photo editing but I recommend using Wikipedia's Photography Workshop if you have a basic request. Sorry again for the delay in getting back to you. --Hazhk (talk) 17:10, 19 August 2021 (UTC)

File:John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute, by Joshua Reynolds crop (retouched).jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

A new editor-upscaler to keep an eye on

Hello Neveselbert -- Just thought I'd point out the arrival of a new editor who may have a tendency to step on your (and my) cloud. He is a very skilled photo manipulator who likes to upscale images. The technical quality of his work is excellent, but he sometimes lays the manipulation on so thick that the result looks more like an airbrushed image of a w:Vargas Girl (perhaps Vargas Girls were before your time). Anyhow, He is User:Jeffrey17363 and I already put a warning on his talk page, explaining the Commons rules pertaining to manipulation and upscaling. Regards -- WikiPedant (talk) 03:41, 4 November 2021 (UTC)

Reply: Jeffrey17363 I am new to Wikipedia and only wish to upload files for John Mathew Smith per his request. John has reviewed and approved all of the images that I have uploaded. Since all these images are the intellectual property of John, I would conclude that he has the final say on what versions of his photos he wants to represent the work that he generously donated to Wikipedia Commons. I have no interest in editing anybody's photos other than John's and do not intend to work on any images except for photos taken by John Mathew Smith.

Please feel free to contact John at: johnmathewsmith@yahoo.com If you wish to get his input.

All the best,

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted template editor right to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to work with templates. Please consider enabling two-factor authentication for your account. Furthermore, please look at Category:Commons protected edit requests (template protected) occasionally and try to help your fellow Commoners with responding to their edit requests. Thank you.

Kynnap

This. Like what a **** are you doing? And I'm really polite here. Kynnap is a long-time contributor who has added over 5000 images and twice selected as the Wikiphotographer of the Year in Estonia. You better have a good explanation for this. Kruusamägi (talk) 11:45, 21 February 2022 (UTC)

@Kruusamägi: I have, see COM:VRT. All Kynnap has to do is confirm they are the author and own the copyright. Usually, metadata is enough to conclude this (as with many of their other photographs) without having to go through the VRT process, but this is clearly an historic photo hence the need for validation. ᴀlbanɢeller (talk) 11:54, 21 February 2022 (UTC)
So let me get that straight? You are accusing a long-time contributor (with 5000+ added images), who happens to be a well-known photographer, that he has added someones elses photo under his own name? Even thou so far he has exclusively added only his own images and all of his images are similar to this specific file? (Category:Photographs by Jaan Künnap in the 1980s) Kruusamägi (talk) 11:59, 21 February 2022 (UTC)
I'm not accusing him of anything, I'm assuming good faith. I've had to myself email VRT to validate permission for files I've uploaded, it's nothing personal, it's just a process to safeguard certain images whose copyright could be called into question. Besides, I'm far from the first person to have tagged one of his files. ᴀlbanɢeller (talk) 12:06, 21 February 2022 (UTC)
But OK, maybe you're right. I won't restore the tag but I still think the copyright situation should be clarified. ᴀlbanɢeller (talk) 12:08, 21 February 2022 (UTC)
Why should anyone truly believe, that a person who has added 2422 images from the 1980s, and stated that all of them are made by him, all share similar characteristics, some even have permission stored (!!!), and where the photographer is well-known (including to Wikipedians), there is reasonable to assume that there is a problem with this specific image? Sounds kind of insane, does it? Kruusamägi (talk) 12:20, 21 February 2022 (UTC)
Copyright can be insane, but it should always be clarified to the best we can. ᴀlbanɢeller (talk) 12:22, 21 February 2022 (UTC)
If you want to nominate stuff for deletion, then just a few weeks ago I completed this. There are nearly 400 images.
And we both know, that this has nothing to do with copyright. The person has published those images himself under a suitable license. As much as copyright is concerned, all is done. Or would you want to nominate all the images for deletion where there isn't a VRT permission next to it? Kruusamägi (talk) 12:30, 21 February 2022 (UTC)
Alright, I'll take your word for it. ᴀlbanɢeller (talk) 12:36, 21 February 2022 (UTC)

Wallace Lindsay portrait speedy deletion

The following file: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wallace_Martin_Lindsay;_portrait_by_Walter_Stoneman_1919_(National_Portrait_Gallery).jpg has been nominated for speedy deletion.

I obtained this file from the National Portrait Gallery and got a licence to use it from the Gallery. But I don't see anywhere to upload the licence.

The licence reads as follows:

Please find, attached, a copy of the image, which I am happy to supply to you with permission to use solely according to your licence, detailed at http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/
It is essential that you ensure images are captioned and credited as they are on the Gallery's own website (search/find each item by NPG number at http://www.npg.org.uk/collections/search/advanced-search.php).
This has been supplied to you free of charge. I would be grateful if you would please consider making a donation at https://my.npg.org.uk/dev/contribute2.aspx?don=11&fieldAmt= in support of our work and the service we provide.
Regards
Rights and Images Department
National Portrait Gallery St Martin's Place London WC2H OHE

Can you please advise on the next step I should take. Thanks. Kanjuzi (talk) 22:07, 13 April 2022 (UTC)

Hi Kanjuzi, Cc-by-nc-nd-3.0 is not an acceptable licence at Commons, so this image cannot be hosted here. You should be able to upload it to English Wikipedia directly however since, unlike Commons where 70 years need to have passed since the death of the author if known, images need only to have been published more than 95 years ago to be uploaded there, under the free licence PD-US-expired-abroad. ᴀlbanɢeller (talk) 23:35, 13 April 2022 (UTC)

Module:Creator

"Collapsible toggle should be an icon" why ? I don't see a good reason for that. If anything, text is better at communicating the function here I'd suspect. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 21:29, 2 February 2023 (UTC)

@TheDJ: hi there, I think there should be a discussion before such a change is made. I personally prefer the icon, although I think a tooltip could be something worth looking at. ᴀlbanɢeller (talk) 00:28, 3 February 2023 (UTC)
Can someone then please make an icon using the current technology instead of something that has been deprecated for 15 years ? —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 08:58, 3 February 2023 (UTC)
@TheDJ: I think you should ask Jarekt about that. ᴀlbanɢeller (talk) 21:07, 3 February 2023 (UTC)
@TheDJ: We use Collapsible toggle icon so that we are less dependent on a a word, and its translation into 200+ languages. It was just easier on multi-language project. However if you would like to propose a different look you are welcome to start with wikicode for a some creator template and than modify it to a new proposed format. Than we can look at the result and open it to vote on keeping old or the new. --Jarekt (talk) 01:07, 4 February 2023 (UTC)
I now see this is in response to changes to Module:Creator. I am fine with updating the look of the template or cleaning up html but lets see before and after first. --Jarekt (talk) 01:13, 4 February 2023 (UTC)
@Jarekt and @Neveselbert (mobile): Better ? —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 18:50, 5 February 2023 (UTC)
@TheDJ: Yes, I think that's better, thanks. ᴀlbanɢeller (talk) 21:10, 5 February 2023 (UTC)

Commons:Deletion requests/File:Donald Walter Cameron of Lochiel, 25th Chief 2.jpg

If you think I made a mistake in closing Commons:Deletion requests/File:Donald Walter Cameron of Lochiel, 25th Chief 2.jpg, feel free to renominate with stated reason; I am happy to leave the next decision to another admin. However do not unilaterally revert admin closures, that is out of procedure. Thanks for your attention. Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 14:47, 12 February 2023 (UTC)

@Infrogmation: can you please undo your closure? The reason you gave for keeping is not valid at all and wholly ignores the concerns pointed out in the discussion. ᴀlbanɢeller (talk) 15:54, 12 February 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for asking. I suggest you renominate with explanation. The closure was my call at the time - I certainly allow that I may have been mistaken, but whatever mistake I may have made is not obvious to me as it seems to be to you. Let's let some others look at it, and some other admin eventually decide. Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 16:41, 12 February 2023 (UTC)
