Wikidata integration into Monuments API

Hi Multichill,

have seen on Git, that You maintain development of the Monuments/Heritage API. Are You planning to integrate the Wikidata-IDs into the API query results? Maybe it would be a great thing to create for every monument (even, if there is no Wikipedia page available yet) a Wikidata page and feed this page with the Monuments database data (maybe with the help of a special bot). This would give us a unique ID system for every monument on this world! --Arch2all (talk) 12:59, 9 July 2014 (UTC)

Long term goal is to make the monuments database obsolete. I'm already importing monuments, see d:Wikidata_talk:Cultural heritage task force#Rijksmonumenten import. Currently about 13.000 Rijksmonumenten in Wikidata. Multichill (talk) 13:04, 9 July 2014 (UTC)
OK, that seems to be the consequent way to go. Btw, checked some entries in Wikidata and found incorrect values for geo position (example: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q474723 ) Maybe there was a bug in the importing script? --Arch2all (talk) 11:50, 10 July 2014 (UTC)
Arch2all. That isn't one of my imports, it's a bit older. Coordinates need to have a "globe" like d:Q2 (earth). If it's missing, it won't display. I'm now fixing the list of missing globes. Multichill (talk) 13:51, 10 July 2014 (UTC)

Batch upload from our National archives (BAnQ)

Hello Multichill, hope you're doing well.

As you may know I'm working on GLAM partnership since 2011, and I finally have it! Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ) and myself will run a pilot project this summer. They accept to upload in Commons images from public domain, the ones that would be usefull for Wikimedia projects. They will have volunteers and history students to give me a hand, but this is the first time I do such thing, and since you have a lot of experience with this, maybe you can give me hints to go forward with this. The number of upload will depends on how many ressources this will take.

They have archives from the VERY beginning of America (17th century) since Frenchies were the first Europeans around here. Their catalog is located here : http://www.banq.qc.ca/archives/index.html but the format is only JPEG. BAnQ is willing to give us TIFF if needed. But some questions remains: how to bulk upload easily, how to harvest notices and ID (in French: Cote (numbers attributed to archives), and how to mesure the impact (visitors). I been working on a template {{BAnQ-image}} to tag images...

Anyway, from your experience, what would be the easiest path to follow? How automated the process can be done? Many pages on Commons and Outreach explains it, but they are all vague. If the results are convincing, they will reconduct the project for most of their PD archives in fall/winter.

The directors are very enthousiasistic about the projects I run in BAnQ since last winter, and now they are ready to go with their archives... It was a hard to convince them, but now they are knocking at our door. So, if you just can give me some hints and path to follow, that would be great. Thanks in advance for your hand. Sorry Benoit, your message got a bit lost in the flood. Sorry for not replying earlier.
Commons:Guide to content partnerships is a starter guide you can read and follow.
I would recommend you use Commons:GLAMwiki Toolset. This tool is intended exactly for what you're doing. It expects an xml file with the metadata (including the location of the jpg/tiff to grab the image from).
Maybe Jean-Frédéric can support you a bit? He has more experience with the tool and I'm pretty sure his French is better ;-)
Multichill (talk) 10:51, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
Bonjour Multichill, thanks for your answer. Sounds like GLAMwiki Toolset is a great tool, but since I'm a little intimitated by xml files, I'd rather to run on fields I know! I can manage things with Commonist and AutoWikiBrowser. For this pilot project with National Archives, we're only talking about 600 files, I can easily manage that considering I've uploaded over 5,000 files for Wikipedia Takes Montreal with its 400 targets!!! So I can manage 600 files, no prob.
But may I ask one thing that would really help us? Can you ask Utilisateur:ErfgoedBot to harvesrt unused files from Category:BAnQ-Projet Poirier within Wikipedia? The same thing your bot is currently doing for Projet:Monuments historiques/Images de monuments canada non utilisées. I tought about a droping page like fr:Wikipédia:GLAM/BAnQ/Images non utilisées : currently the main Cat is almost empty, but in the next couple weeks, our team will fill it. Keeping a track of unused pics will be more than helpful. Of course no need to have a caption, just droping the unused file would be enough...
Hope this demand is not too time-consuming for you, and please feel free to let me know if it is ; I don't want to flood you with more tasks. Hope to see you in London in two weeks. Best regards, Benoit Rochon (talk) 02:32, 22 July 2014 (UTC)
