Commons backlog

Hi Multichill, is my understandig correct that there are no more files that need to be categorized with commonssense via your bot or have you just given up? --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 16:34, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

Every day a new category is created like for example Category:Media needing categories as of 2 June 2009. The category starts in Category:Media needing categories in use in galleries. First a bot tries to categorize images based on gallery usage. Once this bot is done the category is placed in Category:Media needing categories to be checked by a bot. Another bot tries to categorize the leftover images in the category based on Commonsense. Once this bot is done the category is placed in Category:Media needing categories requiring human attention.
Category:Media needing categories to be checked by a bot used to be huge, but i cleared it a couple of weeks ago. So all images in Category:Media needing categories requiring human attention are checked at least once by a bot. It's possible that some of the images in Category:Media needing categories requiring human attention are in use by now, but i'll find these images a different way.
At the moment Commonsense is used for the daily catch and every once in a while on images found by a mass check usage query. Multichill (talk) 18:05, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

Stop your actions

What the hell is going on? You are restoring duplicated images which are of course in scope but replaced by better identical ones.--Leit (talk) 20:29, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

See Commons:Deletion requests/Superseded and our deletion policy. These images shouldn't have been deleted in the first place. Multichill (talk) 20:30, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
It's getting crazier and crazier. This is not about replacing PNG with SVG but about normal replacements of now useless images with better ones. There's no attribution path destroyed by the deletions. To understand me right: I'm against the deletion of superseded images.--Leit (talk) 20:33, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
You clearly don't understand Commons policy. I opened a topic at Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/User problems#Speedy deletions by Leit. Multichill (talk) 20:39, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

Bot for OTRS pending

Hi. Per our last discussions, things are pretty much ready to get going if you're still interested in running the bot. Details are at Commons:OTRS/Noticeboard#Specific proposal. Any input you can provide there would be great. Thanks. - Rjd0060 (talk) 13:51, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

I have that page watchlisted. Will have a look at it soon. Multichill (talk) 19:28, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
Somebody else is writing the bot now. We do, however need a bot (perhaps BotMultichillT) to create daily subcategories of Category:No OTRS permission since which will be populated with Template:No OTRS permission since. Can you do this part? It's similar to what you're already doing at Category:OTRS pending. - Rjd0060 (talk) 16:17, 4 June 2009 (UTC)

Sorry I missed your last message on IRC. You don't need to look at this point as there is nothing you need to do. The bot is written and we're using a single category rather than daily ones. ;-) Thanks. - Rjd0060 (talk) 03:01, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

CD draait zichzelf vast

Hoi.

Multichill (talk) 20:46, 8 June 2009 (UTC)

Category: Deutscher Schäferhund

Nice dog

Dear BotMultichillT,

Although this is not an excuse, but I am very unskilled in the charging of the pictures, this was my first picture. The category is Deutscher Schäferhund, I wrote this onto the end of the row now. Anybody may use the picture freely. If even now wrong, please, wipe.
(Sorry, but my English is very-very poor.)
Thank you for having called my attention for the deficiencies.

Yours truly: Ronastudor (talk) 09:52, 4 June 2009 (UTC)

Looks ok to me! Multichill (talk) 20:45, 8 June 2009 (UTC)

to be deleted, not categorised

You (or your bot) left me a note I should categorise "File:1715 Huet History of Romanses transl Lewis.png" - I thought I had done the correct step to categorise it for deletion. The correct file is "File:1715 Huet History of Romances translated by Stephen Lewis.png" and that's categorised. --Olaf Simons (talk) 10:29, 6 June 2009 (UTC)

Ok. {{Bad name}} is on my ignore list because often categories get lost when people tag images with this template. Just ignore the message in this case. Multichill (talk) 20:44, 8 June 2009 (UTC)

Bot overcategorizations

Bots are stupid, but why does it need to flood six categories (Category:Materials science, Category:Condensed matter physics, Category:Dynamical systems, Category:Statistical mechanics, Category:Thermodynamic diagrams,Category:Particle physics) with about 30 physics equations called "Spin xxx.png"? Such stuff should not be images anyway. Could you by some robot action move them in a place where they are not in the way, like category:Spinodal decomposition? /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 18:02, 6 June 2009 (UTC)

en:user:User A1 has now replaced Logger9's equations with math code, and has marked the images on commons for speedy deletion. So that problem can easily be solved by an admin now. But I think the bot should limit itself to adding two or three specific categories, not more. /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 08:35, 7 June 2009 (UTC)
The bot is just there to help the stupid humans. These stupid humans often forget to add categories :P. The categories were added because the article where these images were in use was in these categories. Replacing these images with math code seems a good solution here. Good morning, Martin

I am glad to see the state of my contribution has been changed. I appreciate very much for your editing effort.

I checked the definition of “original research” and I have to say my contribution is not in that category. My purpose is just to give a very general introduction on the topic of “induction plasma technology”. You may understand the "original" scientific research work in this field will appear very abstruse and “forbidden” for ordinary readers.

However, as the first try to contribute to Wikipedia, I may be not good enough to use the “neutral tone” as the Wiki requested. I should be well content to accept your modification and polishing wherever you deem proper.

Sincerely Yours

Xfanplasma

I am sorry for powerless in doing what I should do by myself.

I also have many to learn in editing. But when I came in this webpage, I see how busy is your work. Therefore, I just list my questions here and only hope your help in your leisure time.

1/ I found you re-size and re-place the pictures in the proper position. How to do that? Is it the right for authorized people (like you) only?

2/ I even don’t know how to make the references. I place the name of article between the references symbols <ref> and <ref\>. The number 1,2, … appears correctly, but no listing and no link for that article.

3/ I also want to link several key words to other Wikipedia entries. For example, link “plasma” to other exist webpage, but I can do only adding behind that word a Http://www.....

4.I don’t know why the table I typed in test should be moved to the end of the entire article. How did you move it back?

Sincerely yours

Xfanplasma

Fotothek

Shouldn'd we ask, when the next batch will arrive? -- Mbdortmund (talk) 21:45, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

I already did. They're working on it, we just have to be patient. I the meantime we still have plenty of images to work on in Category:Images from the German Federal Archive needing categories and Category:Images from the Deutsche Fotothek needing categories. Multichill (talk) 12:28, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
Thx for your answer. Unfortunately there are many pictures in the actual batches which are very difficult to categorize because of the lack of a description. I already asked in de.wikipedia for people who know about the locations but it seems to be difficult to find out where the pictures are taken and what they show. In many cases it seems to be very difficult to get helpful information. --Mbdortmund (talk) 13:45, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
You're talking about the Bundesarchiv or Fotothek batches? Most uncategorized Bundesarchiv images could probably be put in Category:Agriculture in the German Democratic Republic, Category:People of the German Democratic Republic or subcategories. Multichill (talk) 13:50, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

Annoying bot

If you're going to ask me to categorize my photos, at least update your request when you go ahead and do it yourself a couple days later.  :( --Elvey (talk) 18:18, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

When uploading pictures you should do your best to categorize your photos. Multichill's bot can automatic add suggestions for categories, but the bot can't replace the human brain. So even if the bot categorize your photos, a human should still check it. It is a service - the annoying part is just a bonus ;-) --MGA73 (talk) 18:26, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

Could your bot help me?

I found that your bot adds the date to OTRS pending on files. I came to the conclusion it would be more efficient to tell the user to use the date on the media wiki pages. So I've started replacing {{tl|OTRS pending}} with {{tlx|OTRS pending|2=month={{CURRENTMONTHNAME}}|3=day={{CURRENTDAY}}|4=year={{CURRENTYEAR}}}} and I really feel like Charlie Chaplin in Modern Times... Is there a way to automate this? Yuval Y § Chat § 01:27, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

You should probably use {{subst:OP}}. You could use a replace bot to do the work for you. Autowikibrowser is probably easy for this. Multichill (talk) 12:24, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
Donno where {{OP}} was hidden, but when I've placed the date on the media-wiki texts, the date is automatically updated. Do you suggest it's better to write the users to use {{OP}} instead of {{OTRS pending}} so there won't be need to add the tlx thingy which gives the correct date? One way or another, I want that the uploader could simply copy the template which adds the correct date after the OTRS pending. So what I'm asking is that your bot either add the date as I've started, or replace the whole template to {{tl|OP}}, or I donno... Yuval Y § Chat § 13:36, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
{{subst:OP}} is probably the easiest thing for users. Multichill (talk) 10:15, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

Categories on images

Howdy. Recently, I uploaded an image. There was a cat on the page, but I forgot to remove {{Uncategorized}}. Later, BotMultichill added some cats as well. After that, BotMultichillT left me a message on my talk page stating I uploaded an uncat image. Is there any chance your bots can check to see if there is a cat on an image even if {{Uncategorized}} is on the page?--Rockfang (talk) 19:15, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

Why did you put in {{Uncategorized}} into the image page yourself (first version)? --Leyo 19:24, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
The bots just check for {{Uncategorized}}. Don't add the template if you added categories. Multichill (talk) 20:55, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
When I move images to commons I use CommonsHelper. I untick Use WikiSense to suggest categories and tick Remove existing categories. When that 2nd option is unticked, CommonsHelper adds {{Uncategorized}} automatically. Normally, I remove it when I add my own category manually, but in this instance I forgot. I understand that the bot only checks for {{Uncategorized}}. I am curious if the bot can check to see if there is a category there before it tells an uploader that the image is uncategorized.--Rockfang (talk) 21:01, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
It's kind of hard to distinguish between topic categories (like Category:Churches in Herefordshire) and other categories (like Category:CC-BY-SA-2.0). Multichill (talk) 21:07, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Bot losing uncategorized dates

Hi. FYI, edits like this are removing important information, namely the date for when the image was tagged as uncategorized. Couldn't it just append the Unidentified Logo cat instead of removing the dated Uncat category? Wknight94 talk 18:47, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

It's not uncategorized anymore so it shouldn't contain {{Uncategorized}}. The date isn't that important anyway, it's just used to divide the huge pile of uncategorized images into smaller chunks and to control the flow. Multichill (talk) 10:25, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

Hi Multichill, thank you for helping. As you saw I tried to translate the text of this medium from dutch to english. I got this message about source and author again and I must say that I don't quite understand this. I'm author and source from the beginning and don't know what I've done wrong. I'm not good in this wiki stuff at all (it's like a maze to me and takes a lot of time finding out) and hope that you can help again. Actually I prefer to discuss all this behind coulisses as I think that discussions should be more invisible. So emails are also fine with me. File:Starr 080117-1845 Pisum sativum.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Dear MultichillT

I believe you edit articles in articles relating to Germany, and your contcact info appeared in an email to me from WikiAdmin. This is my first time posting on wikipedia.

I posted on titled 'Largest Fair on the Rhine", and at the top of it now appears a text box saying the article is written like an advertisement.

I believe it comes from the title - the error here is that the title is NOT a sloga, it is the actual name of the event. The article is in fact written in a neutral tone and complies with the standard of Wikipedia articles. Are you able to remove the box?

Thank you. June 16, Rainer Perry Rainerperry (talk) 11:41, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

Question

Hi, I have a question. I don't know all the ins and outs of uploading pics vis a vis copyright, but am I correct in understanding that only public domain pics can be used on the Commons, and that copyrighted pics can only be used on Wikipedia under Fair Use? I used to think that copyrighted pics could used on WP if permission of the author was obtained, but then I learned that pics can only be used under Fair Use and P.D. circumstances. I ask, because the Summary on this pic's page indicates that "permission" was given to upload it. Wouldn't this indicate that it's copyright protected? I tried going to the talk page of the user who uploaded it, but it's been deleted.

Part of what spurred me to ask is that the subject of a Biography of Living Persons article, one who has taken an extremely strong interest in his article, and has at times employed my assistance in addressing issues of privacy and sourcing in his article, has requested that the photo in his article be changed, and had indicated that he has "permission" of the person who took it.

Can you explain to me the ins and outs of this, or point me to someone who can? I don't use Commons talk pages much, so can you respond to me here? Thanks. Nightscream (talk) 02:07, 17 June 2009 (UTC)

I see at User talk:Nightscream#Question & OTRS permission that this has been solved. Multichill (talk) 10:36, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

Thank You Buddy, please read

Thank you Multichill for saving my photos! Like I stated in my message yesterday, I own all of these photos. It was such a mistake that somebody could ever think a copyright violation was going on here. You said they need to be put into a category. I never use this Commons account so I don't know how to properly categorize them. Could you help me and let me know where they should be placed, what category should they be placed under, I don't know. I would really appreciate that very much. I just want my photos back on here so they can be placed back on my Wikipedia page where they rightfully belong. I also noticed that my profile photo was also removed which was a separate photo from these 3. I can't believe that was removed. It was there for over a year and a Wikipedia editor even uploaded it for me. I look forward to hearing back from you my friend and quickly fixing this. Thank You for you time!

Jaderocker (talk) 08:41, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

Thank You very much for your advice on letting me know my 3 photos need to be categorized. I just have no idea how to do this or what my choices of categories are. I really need some help placing them accurately. This pertains to the 3 photos that are now saved which should never have been affected to begin with, but my Wikipedia default profile photo was affected as well. My profile photo was on my Wikipedia page for over a year and it was uploaded by a Wikipedia editor, clearly a mistake to delete it from Commons thinking it was a copyright violation especially since I am the sole owner of this photo just like the other 3. I still don't know how this error happened, oh well, I ultimately just want my 3 pro wrestling photos and my default profile photo back on commons and properly categorized so they can be re-posted to my Wikipedia page where they rightfully belong. Hopefully with a minute or two of your help my friend this will be cleared up.

Thank You so much, sorry to bother you again my friend,

My last question on this topic, is it ok for me re-upload these photos to commons and license all 4 of them (3 pro wrestling photos and my profile photo) under public domain. Again, I own them and I now know commons used photos that are free. Please respond to me at your earliest convenience today so I remedy this issue that should never have happened to begin with. Martin H. is the editor who initially placed the copyright violation tags on my photos...................photos I own.

Jaderocker (talk) 13:13, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

Hello Multichill, I just re-uploaded the first photo. I took your advice and placed it in the category "Professional Wrestlers". Licensed it under FREE DOMAIN since I own the photo. Please, let me know if I am leaving something out. Thanks,

I just uploaded the other 2 photos and categorized them under "Professional Wrestlers" and Licensed them under Free Domain since I am the sole owner of them. Let me know if I am leaving something out, Thank You So Much,

Job for a bot? Uploading images

Hi Multichill! I came across this Template:PD-STFP when I looked at this image File:Bucharest Citaro bus 4551.jpg. It seem that there are many good images on that web page. Maybe you could get a bot to uploade some of them? --MGA73 (talk) 15:09, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

Looks like a nice structured collection. Sure worth the effort! Multichill (talk) 10:46, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

Joost Meerloo picture

Dear Multichill, as already indicated, I took the picture (signaled as "uncategorized" by you) from the dustjacket of Meerloo's Along the Fourth Dimension: Man's Sense of Time and History (1970, The John Day Company). Being a promotional picture of the author, according to the publisher no copyrights apply to it – not even the originator of the picture is mentioned and/or known anymore. Moreover, having also been an advisor to several intelligence agencies, pictures of the late Dr. Meerloo are very rare. So you would make me very happy if it would be possible to leave things as they are. The same goes for the book jacket: as an official Dutch governmental publication for the common good it can be freely reproduced.

For the other picture I uploaded (Otto Muehl) I obtained explicit permission of it's author (Mr. Theo Altenberg from Germany) to use it here. The Laurie Anderson picture from 1986 is entirely my own work. Bert56 (talk) 09:47, 20 June 2009 (UTC)

Please take a look at Commons:OTRS on how to confirm permission. Multichill (talk) 10:47, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

Good for you! I guess you didn't read my frequently asked questions? Multichill (talk) 10:49, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

Completely false, completely nonsense. Thanks for nothing! Marcus Cyron (talk) 22:40, 20 June 2009 (UTC)

problema

Buen trabajo... --Harry Popotter (talk) 22:52, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

I don't speak Spanish. Multichill (talk) 10:50, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

Hi,

I've fixed the problem. Hopefully I saved on a text file all the File:Example.jpg (edit · last · + · history · watch · unwatch · check usage · find cats · logs · purge · w · search · links · DR · del · undel) entries. Now it's non substed. --Dereckson (talk) 00:11, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

Thank you! All images should be tagged with {{Delete}} by now. Multichill (talk) 10:59, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Hello Multichill! Can you run your bot once to fill this category again (if there is anything left)? Nillerdk (talk) 10:29, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

I guess we're out of ammo. Latest query only returned 4 images. Multichill (talk) 10:43, 24 June 2009 (UTC)
Got new ammo! I'll have my bot go over it. Multichill (talk) 13:36, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

I upload images to Commons solely because Wikipedia suggests I do it here. I don't go any further because I find the entire thing extremely confusing and difficult to work with, including this whole "talk" concept. What happens if I don't categorize my images?--Mfwills (talk) 10:54, 25 June 2009 (UTC)

A bot leaves you a note and another bot tries to categorize your uncategorized images. Multichill (talk) 11:07, 25 June 2009 (UTC)

Escudos

Por favor me puedes ayudar a colocar en un mismo sitio todos los escudos que hasta el momento he subido, o sea en: "Órdenes militares Hispánicas". Perdona no se lo que hago mal, me estoy acostumbrando al medio. ¿Gracias!. Selher— Preceding unsigned comment added by Selher (talk • contribs) 07:47, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

I don't know how to add the categories, could you please do it for me? Category:High schools and secondary schools Category:Library and information science Category:Gießen Category:Schools in Germany— Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.210.192.106 (talk • contribs) 13:23, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

See User:Multichill/faq#How do i categorize images?. Multichill (talk) 12:18, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
To do this, I will have to upload the picture again. Would you like me to do so? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.210.192.106 (talk • contribs) 15:27, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
No, just press the edit link and add the categories. Multichill (talk) 13:31, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

Battle of Stalingrad iamges/drawing

Hi Multichill, all my images, drawing belong to category Battle of Stalingrad as mentioned during file upload. All images are categorized under Battle of Stalingrad, so I don`t understand your request, Cheers, --Graf zu Pappenheim (talk) 11:47, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

You didn't add the category. You probably forgot to press "ok" in hotcat. Multichill (talk) 11:50, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

HIDDENCAT

Hi, I noticed you reverted my change to remove HIDDENCAT from Category:Images from the New York Public Library without any justification. I find it useful for image source categories not to be hidden; and it also prevents my current upload batch from being all marked uncategorized by your bot. Is it conventional for image source categories to be hidden or what? If it is, I can be marking them uncategorized myself, but I need to know what to do. Dcoetzee (talk) 16:56, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

Sorry, I didn't notice you removed the keyword. It's convention to hide all non topic categories, but this is not yet applied to all categories. It's a wrong assumption that my bot is affected by the category being hidden or not, it just contains a (really long) list of templates to ignore. I was just discussing how to get these images categorized at irc with User:Diaa abdelmoneim. Let's keep the discussing onwiki this at Commons:Batch uploading/NYPL Digital Gallery.
