- Thank you, I'm glad you like it. I'm new here so I'm a little confused, though. Doesn't a picture have to be a featured picture before it can be a picture of the day?

Not yet. Here is what is said by now about Pictures of the day : These are images selected for display on the Main Page as the Picture of the day. Publishing them in this page allows all users to translate the captions into other languages. In this early phase of Commons, the selection of images is performed by anybody. It is our goal that eventually, the Pictures of the day will always be Featured pictures (which are selected by consensus), but right now we don't have enough featured pictures.
Sincerely, I think your picture could be a featured one, too !

Dear Moondigger, may I remind you kindly to our previous letter: For our student textbook about Charles Darwin (Die Entstehung der Arten, illustrated and commented by Paul Wrede and Saskia Wrede) we kindly ask you for permission to use the wonderful coloured photo of the petrified wooden trunk.
Our book will be published in German by VCH-Wiley. It is addressed to beginners in biology like students or highly educated laymen. Publication will be December 2012.
