Why Posterized ? Pourquoi donc ???[edit]

Bonjour, hello,

I am wondering why you are uploading many posterized images. This may be an "artistic choic", but from my point of view, it is just plainly a lowering of quality. Images are more useful when they are true photographs with all details.

In French, now, for I am lazy:

Merci pour ces images. Je constate que l'utilisation des catégories vous pose un peu problème. Ce n'est pas grave, il faut juste prendre le temps de comprendre comment ça marche. Pour commencer, on peut utiliser des catégories moins précises, comme par exemple "Orne". Bon courage,

Frédéric (talk) 09:55, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Frédéric -Your English is very good. I have intended the images for illustrating my articles for English speaking travelers to the towns, villages and the countryside of Lower Normandy. I am a former illustrator and designer and prefer the graphic style of the 1920's travel posters, or 19th century tourist paintings in oil.

I began this project of writing and photographing this region of Normandy when I realized the enormous potential of smart phone GPS guide apps. The content for these apps came from Wikipedia usually. However, the tiny screen makes photos of stone buildings look like brown thumbprints, so the graphic images work very well for my purposes. Plus, they are much more attractive.

Most of the illustration needs for the articles are to create interest and to clarify the text with impressionistic images; detail and reality are less important.

I have used more realistic images when the detail was important. In the future,I do plan to include galleries with more traditional images, and because you have expressed interest, I will upload more of my original images for others to use.

As to the categories. I am very unhappy with my choices. After reviewing numerous categories, I concluded that most were either too locally oriented, or too general. I chose "too general" because I thought they would be easier for others to find ie.Orne. I'm open to suggestions, and I will make another effort to choose better in the future. if my english is unclear, I'll try in French if you prefer, but as i said, your English is very good. Thank you for your interest. Mlane (talk) 12:23, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Post Script - I just spent time researching categories, and yes I can do a much better job of choosing them. Thank you.Mlane (talk) 12:58, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I added my € 0,02 to the Lion d'Or issue below before I read your statement here.  Generally I think that optimizations for mobile devices are a job for the server, not the submitter.  Otherwise commons would need a category & template for manual optimizations.  Lion d'Or as is is just ugly for most devices (incl. thumbnail on the Village Pump), but if it could be arranged that it's only used on devices with small displays it might be okay.  BTW, 3.9 MB is not exactly optimal for mobile devices, that should be enough for at least two above average quality JPEGs.  –Be..anyone (talk) 05:05, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
File:Hotel_Lion_d'Or.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Me again[edit]

Hello,

I have seen your (long) answer to the deletion request above. You certainly do have reasonable arguments. Let us wait and see what other people think about that, and hope that everybody keeps calm. Anyway, it would be a good idea to upload also the original images.

Concerning categories, the principle here in Commons is to use the most precise category only. So if you have a picture of the donjon in Argentan, the best category would be "Donjon d'Argentan". If this does not exist, then one can uses "Castles in Orne" and "Buildings in Argentan". If one of these still did not exist, then one could use "Castles in France" and "Argentan".

One nice tool to use is "Hot Cat", which allows to see available categories. You can turn this on in your preferences, in the Gadget section.

One thing to avoid is to use categories contained in one another, like "Castles in France" and "Castles in Orne".

You can find more explanations on categories here: Commons:Categories.

Yours,

Frédéric (talk) 11:34, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

While we are at it with hopefully helpful hints, you can sign texts on your user page, but signatures are only expected on talk pages: Normally nobody but you has any business to edit your user page. If the warning templates here intimidate you feel free to remove them. Of course you should still do something about a warning, if it was no nonsense. But otherwise your talk page is also your page, you can always add a permalink to the current version, decree that this permalink constitutes an "archive", and then clean up your talk page as you like — keeping the archive link, otherwise it would be pointless. –Be..anyone (talk) 11:05, 9 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Hello, Mlane78212!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Images from Bailleul[edit]

Hi Mlane78212,

While categorizing images you uploaded yesterday, I found three of them I have doubts about the place: File:Church in Bailleul with motte in foreground.JPG, File:Motte feudal at Bailleul.JPG, and File:Church Bailleul.JPG, as there are many places named Bailleul in France; I am not sure if it is the commune of Bailleul in Orne, the other pictures being from Orne, but I did not find any images of the churches in this commune. Thank you for giving me confirmation of the place. Croquant (talk) 10:10, 30 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Vinyl covering to block out windows for mandatory curfews.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.
