Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement[edit]

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open![edit]

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Thank you for your recent additions to the Images for Deletion lists! It's really helpful to the admins to have solid nominations for images and I want to thank you for your time and effort! Cheers! Ellin Beltz (talk) 05:05, 12 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

ArchiveBot[edit]

Hi, I noticed you have set up User:MiszaBot to archive your talk page. Unfortunately, the bot has stopped working, and given how its operator is inactive, it is unclear when/if this will fixed. For the time being, I have volunteered to operate a MiszaBot clone (running the exact same code). With that said, your input would be appreciated at Commons:Bots/Requests/ArchiveBot 1. File:Small crab 2 at St Marks NWR.JPG has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Co-Cathedral of Saint Thomas More (Tallahassee, Florida)[edit]

I see you are from Georgia, but I've also noticed you have many photos from northern Florida and from Tallahassee in particular. Assuming you might be in that area sometime in the not too distant future, would it be possible for you take and upload a photo of the Co-Cathedral of Saint Thomas More (Tallahassee, Florida)? I realize you may not be there anytime soon, but I thought if you were going to be in that area in the next year it wouldn't hurt to ask. Best regards.Farragutful (talk) 18:17, 11 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I will definitely take a photo of that location and upload it. I live in Valdosta, Georgia so Tallahassee is only 1.5 hours away. If you have any other requests, feel free to add them to my talk page. --Mjrmtg (talk) 19:49, 11 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Papa John's in Waycross, GA[edit]

Is it just me, or did the Papa John's you took a picture of in Waycross, Georgia look a lot like a former gas station? ----DanTD (talk) 19:04, 18 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Good observation, Google street view shows it as a Papa John's back in 2008, but I'll ask my friends in Wayrcoss if they have any idea if that location used to be a gas station. --Mjrmtg (talk) 21:03, 18 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it used to be a gas station and convenience store. --Mjrmtg (talk) 14:12, 21 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
See for yourself. Because it sure looks like it used to be one to me.

HotCat edits[edit]

When you use HotCat to make minor changes, as you did at File:FlFernHammockSprings.jpg‎ and many others, please be sure to set it for "minor edit", as it is a nuisance to have all of the minor edits show up in watch lists. .     Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 13:34, 29 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I will use the "minor edit" for now on when adding categories. I thought the "minor edit" was for fixing typos or something like that. --Mjrmtg (talk) 16:31, 29 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
To be sure, it's a fine line, but for a highly experienced user such as you, adding cats should be completely routine and not controversial. If you were a newbie, I wouldn't make the suggestion. Thanks, .     Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 10:30, 30 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Albany federal courthouse.[edit]

File:Red Chevrolet, Valdosta 12713.JPG[edit]

Hello!
Thanks for the thanks Clin.

Just for the record, the truck is a 1952 model because of the "push-button" door handle that was introduced that year. For 1953, the hood side emblem changed a lot, with no longer "Chevrolet" appearing but with (big) numerals for the model (3100 to 6400). It is a 4100/6100 or 4400/6400 model due to the shape of the bumper and to the wheel rims. Most certainly a 4400/6400, but it's hard for me to say if it has a 137" (x100 model) or a 161" (x400 truck) wheelbase.

No magic in this knowledge, just a good memory of previous readings

Rotate?[edit]

{{helpme}} I do not know anything about photo manipulation and most times prefer to have untouched photos. One of my photos could sure use rotating and I was wondering if there was somewhere to ask for a rotation? Thanks. File:Federal Courthouse, Albany.JPG --Mjrmtg (talk) 10:50, 21 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

We have a bot that handles rotation for simple rotations of 90, 180 and 270 degrees, you can add files to the list of files to be rotated by bot, by adding a template to the file, copy and paste {{Rotate|clockwise angle}}, to your file, remembering to substitute the angle to be rotated clockwise, i.e.. 90, 180 or 270. For files which are not multiples of 90 add the template {{rotate}} to the file. This case as a non simple rotation, I've added the rotate template for you, compare the diffs to see what I added to the file to add it to the list of files needing rotation.--KTo288 (talk) 22:34, 21 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

my closure[edit]

Hi, regarding this: Special:Diff/133647686

I should say, I'm not an admin, I was just trying to tidy something up that I thought was uncontroversial. To me it doesn't seem important, and on the wikis where I am an admin (like English Wikipedia, Meta) I would never bother to delete a page for this kind of thing -- which seems more like playful test edits than malicious vandalism, contains no links, etc. However, if you'd like, I'd be happy to reopen the DR and let an elected admin close it as they see fit. -Pete F (talk) 23:22, 3 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

No worries, the message on the talk page that that was removed was someone angry with Burger King merging with Tim Horton's and moving their headquarters to Canada to pay less corporate taxes, which isn't true. That was not the reason for the merger. --Mjrmtg (talk) 23:26, 3 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Aha, I missed that connection -- to me it looked like a random message, but I can see that connection. Would you like me to undo my (maybe inappropriate) closure and let an admin decide? -Pete F (talk) 01:44, 4 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If you can somehow ask an admin to look at the deletion request. I didn't know non-admins could close deletion requests. I meant no offense. --Mjrmtg (talk) 01:56, 4 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like INeverCry got to it before I did, and deleted it. No offense taken of course :) -Pete F (talk) 04:29, 4 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I-75, not in Pinellas County[edit]

I'm okay with you making county categories for Interstate 75 in Florida, but I-75 itself doesn't go through Pinellas County, therefore Interstate 75 in Pinellas County, Florida should be eliminated. ----DanTD (talk) 13:54, 25 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about that. I thought since Interstate 175 was under Interstate 75 in Florida and it was in Pinellas County that it would fit under Interstate 75 in Pinellas County, Florida. --Mjrmtg (talk) 14:16, 25 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Restaurant signs[edit]

Hi,

I notice you added my photo File:Pizza Hut Restaurant Kingsway West Dundee Scotland (crop).jpg to Category:Restaurant_signs. Thanks for your work in categorising Commons, but I'm not sure I understand the reasoning in this particular case!

Almost all restaurants have signs (and hence could go in that category if that was the only rationale), but this photo doesn't focus on that feature and the standalone outfront pillar sign is cropped out here (it's edge on and hence unreadable on the uncropped version too, though).

Just wondering whether it belongs or not, cheers.

Laerol (talk) 19:56, 21 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I would have put it under Restaurant signs in Scotland if that category had existed. The photo does show two signs, one on each side of the building. Even adding Signs in Scotland, if that category exists, would be beneficial as the building has a sign on it. If you don't feel they belong, feel free to remove the category. I just thought of adding Brick buildings in Scotland, but that category doesn't exist. I was just browsing recent uploads, saw your photo of a Pizza Hut and thought I'd check it out :) --Mjrmtg (talk) 02:12, 22 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I appreciate that it shows signs, the problem is that almost *every* external photo of a restaurant shows a sign, so used consistently the category would be both huge and redundant (i.e. very high overlap with a general "restaurant" category).
From the majority of the content in there already, I get the impression that it's meant for images where the sign *specifically* is the main subject- or at least of notable prominence- rather than just part of a restaurant exterior.
As for the building, I don't know for sure, but if it's of typical modern construction then I suspect that it'll use a cavity wall, with the traditional brick on the outside layer, and breeze block construction for the inside layer (e.g. [2], [3]). Technically, breeze blocks are still bricks, so it'd be a "brick" building, but as most modern buildings are made this way, that category (if it existed) would also be so broad as to be meaningless. :-) Generally, Commons seems to favour categories that are usefully- but not excessively- narrow enough to differentiate and make things easy to find.
All the best, Laerol (talk) 11:15, 22 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
