Elementary vs. middle schools

I noticed that you are splitting some state's primary schools into elementary and middle schools. When you do that, you may want to add, for example, {{see also cat|Middle schools in Illinois}} to elementary categories and vice-versa. Even schools now called "elementary" or "middle", at least in the Midwest, were K-8 before the 1980s, except for a few disticts that had "junior highs". Trying to determine whether any given school happened to be elementary vs. middle at a given time, or formerly or later, would be quite a job. (I know of schools that were K-8, then became one of the subtypes when the elementary-middle split became fashionable in the 1980s, then later became the other one. I have been adding "Category:Middle schools in the United States" because "Category:Middle schools" existed, but it's going to end up messy. I've tried to only move schools that had the two categories School in Illinois and Middle schools in the United States into a category of Category:Middle schools in Illinois. I know unfortunately not all schools follow the "elementary", "middle" and "high school" models. Even in the south, some high schools are 10-12, some middle schools 7-9, some schools K-3, some 4-6. They were all lumped under the main category for the longest time then today I saw someone created Parking lots in Pennsylvania so took care of the rest but it meant adding "Parking in" categories for each state too, but that's taken care of now. Town halls

We've always used "town halls" to embrace everything included in Wikipedia's en:Seat of local government article, and when someone's looking for an image of one, it doesn't particularly help to separate the buildings by the status of the entity that occupies the building. Picture question

Are you sure that this is the Homerville city hall? It does not look much like a city hall and Google shows the city hall in a different location. Truth be told, however, Google is often mistaken. Creating a lot of single-entry categories is counterproductive

I'd just like to point out that creating a lot of single-entry categories is counterproductive to usability: it impedes visual search and comparison and makes users page down through one or two additional layers repeatedly. As a general rule, a category does not need diffusing if it can be displayed on one physical screen; in the cases where subcategorization by year or by state is logical so that a large number of small subcategories may result, the main category may be permitted to get even larger, 100-150 or so and still display on one logical screen with scrolling. If a category needs diffusing, it is most effective to create subcategories for those segments with substantial numbers of entries rather than try for completeness. Likewise, for by-state categories, if most states will have only a handfull of entries those images can be left in the main (typically in-the-US)category and the individual state subcategories (typically should contain at least a half-dozen images) left there also. An X-in-the-US-by-state meta-category is not logically necessary except where another subcategorization scheme (for instance by date,material,or ownership) is employed in parallel. Our emphasis should be practical usability, not formal completeness of categorization. Commons is mostly about images and at least in my view that implies we should optimizing the utility of visual display. Thanks Dankarl (talk) 14:20, 19 April 2013 (UTC)

I did not start the Category:Community centers in the United States by state but I have seen several other "by state" categories. I was just following what I thought was a good trend. There were more then one physical screen of photos before I started on this category. If "by state" categories shouldn't exist, the no one other bots or whoever should be creating them. I don't say they shouldn't exist, but when there is only one type of subcategory they are redundant and constitute an unnecessary layer. I have tried a few times to make the argument against very small subcategories, but do not think I have had much influence. I am told that at one time there was some guidance on diffusing categories, but can't find such now. Don't mean to pick on you, I just think it's a real useability issue and your moves happened to be what finally prompted action.Dankarl (talk) 17:54, 19 April 2013 (UTC)

Government units in Wisconsin

I keep seeing you changing categories about Wisconsin communities and there is something that I'm concerned that you don't understand about the governmental units in Wisconsin. You keep inadvertently opening cans of worms. Wisconsin communities are divided up differently than most states:

• cities
• villages
• census designated places (CDPs)
• unincorporated communities
• towns

Cities and villages are incorporated and only have to follow the laws of the county, state, and federal government. All land not in city and villages are governed by towns. Towns are the rural land between cities and villages. Town boards govern land in CDPs and unincorporated communities. The English Wikipedia article Political Subdivisions of Wisconsin describes it in more detail.

The name of a city/village is OFTEN used for the town surrounding it. So the city of Green Bay is surrounded by the town of Green Bay (city hall vs town hall). I haven't notice that you had any problem with this topic.

I have been ignoring these distinctions for sake of simplicity. I don't know the exact classification of many communities without looking it up (despite being well traveled in the state). But you keep going there so I had to say something.

So for instance, you recently created a city category for "town halls" but you ignored village halls. Another problem is that Category:City signs in Wisconsin is a complete mess with a mixture of everything. For this second topic, I would really like to see 2 categories. One for the official DOT signs road signs for any community (example for the city of Medford). A second category would be for the unique hand made welcome signs to any community - even if there isn't the word "welcome" on the sign (example for Medford). Those are the two types of signs at almost every community in Wisconsin. I am fine with having both of my proposed categories be subdivided by the type of community/government unit. What images specifically did I make changes on that you don't like? I was changing images that said city hall on the image to the Category:City halls in Wisconsin, I was just trying to separate the city-specific ones out. I didn't think I touched any village halls. I see no problems with city halls in Wisconsin. What I'm commenting about is inconsistency. You've separated some but didn't go all of the way. There are little difference between a village and a city in Wisconsin but they are treated very differently (on several categories). Earlier you did some changes to Category:City signs in Wisconsin. You removed some file because they weren't cities. I dislike how that category is inconsistently done. Again, please don't make changes until we discuss.

I would like to see 2 categories for the signs in a community. One for the "welcome" sign - even if it don't say welcome. I mean the unique homemade sign that marks most communities. To be consistent, there should be Category:City welcome signs in Wisconsin, Category:Village welcome signs in Wisconsin, Category:Unincorporated community welcome signs in Wisconsin, etc. Or - even better - remove the word "welcome" from the category title to be more accurate.

The second sign in all communities is the state DOT road sign. I think there should be a parent category for all of these. Then Category:City signs in Wisconsin, Category:Village signs in Wisconsin, etc should be created. Perhaps a more descriptive and neutral word should be added to make the distinction clear. I was going by the image's name or if the building in the image had the words "city hall" on it as to whether i put it in the city hall category.

We'd need to keep the word welcome in the category to someone differentiate the homemade signs from the DOT signs. I like your idea of having Category:City welcome signs in Wisconsin, Category:Village welcome signs in Wisconsin, Category:Unincorporated community welcome signs in Wisconsin, etc. they would all be sub-categories of the existing Category:Welcome signs in Wisconsin.

I see no problem having Category:Village signs in Wisconsin, Category:Town signs in Wisconsin, Category:Unincorporated community signs in Wisconsin and Category:Census-designated place signs in Wisconsin. Category:Village halls in Wisconsin is a good idea. There's shouldn't be halls for CDP or unincorporated communities since they both are governed by towns. I would start by checking Category:Town halls in Wisconsin and suggest checking Category:Villages in Wisconsin for more halls. I had forgot to mention that CDP take precedent in categories over unincorporated communities in the categories. CDPs are a special case of unincorporated communities - ones that the federal government uses for census grouping. I looked through for CDPs. Royalbroil 03:40, 10 June 2013 (UTC)

You need to bring the category up for discussion and wait for other to discuss it, not remove it from the photos on your own. And NOT blank the category like you did on Category:Libraries photographed in 2012. There is a basic difference between our thinking. I agree with the original standards of categorization on the Commons, and I feel too many categories are wrong. Especially categories with the date of the photo are wrong, if the subject of the photo does not support the necessity of a date. A photo of a building can be almost the same in the different years, they do not deserve a separate category. You could create a category for every single day of the photos taken of the Liberty statue from different angles. Is it worthwhile? Unfortunately, the administrators and patrollers of the Commons are not able to confront this tsunami of meaningless categories. I won"t fight you, I'll return to my own subjects.
