Hi Mike.lifeguard! Thanks for giving me your oppinnion about me in my RfB, and because of some opposes of really trusted commons-users (including you) I withdrew. Now I have got the best 'crate-coach I could think of and I might possibly retry in a few month. To improve my behaviour/editing habbits here on commons till then I'd like to hear what you want me to change in detail. Expecially examples you're not happy with would be great. Feel also free to e-mail me if you don't want to say this in public. Thanks for your help, abf «Cabale?! Quelle Caballe?» 14:55, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

Proposal to change allowable scope of userpage content

I have made a proposal to specify more clearly what is and what is not allowed on usepages. You have expressed interest in this issue, and you may wish to comment at Commons_talk:Project_scope/Pages,_galleries_and_categories#The use of userpages to advance personal political opinions. --MichaelMaggs (talk) 21:44, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for the notice, but I don't think the Commons community wishes to hear my opinion at present, and I'm not at all sure I wish to give it.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 21:50, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

John Adams book, and AMISTAD book

Hello Mike.

Recently, I created this article on Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mutiny_on_the_Amistad:_The_Saga_of_a_Slave_Revolt_and_Its_Impact_on_American_Abolition,_Law,_and_Diplomacy

It needed an accompanying picture, so, using the JOHN ADAMS BOOK article for guidance (available at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Adams_(book) ), I posted a picture of AMISTAD'S cover.

But, I recently was notified by you that the picture had to be taken down due to fair use rules.

Creating article was actually rather challenging for me. It took HOURS; it was mostly worth it because of the importance of the Amistad saga and its relevance to Martin Luther King Jr day. While I realize that I probably could learn how to properly upload a picture of the AMISTAD book cover to accompany the article and append it with the appropriate citations or reference-attributes, considering how long it took me to do the article the first time, uploading a book cover would not be an easy task for me.

That said, could you please identify an appropriate image from the web, upload it the appropriate location, and then insert it in the article? My sense is that you're rather experienced at this and you could do this much faster and easily than I ever could.

Thanks, Mike. --AlphaFactor (talk) 11:38, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

Excuse me for replying on your talk page Mike, I hope you don't mind. Hello AlphaFactor! The difference between the book cover at en:John Adams (book) and the book cover you uploaded here is that the former is uploaded locally on the english Wikipedia, while you uploaded a book cover here on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia Commons is a repository for freely licensed media, and someone owns the copyright to the cover of en:Mutiny on the Amistad: The Saga of a Slave Revolt and Its Impact on American Abolition, Law, and Diplomacy. However, some wikipedias - including the English Wikipedia - allow files to be uploaded and used under the fair use provision of united states copyright law (or similar in other countries). You can see en:File:John Adams book.jpg for an example. I can assist you in uploading the book cover to the english Wikipedia, if you provide me a link to an image of the book cover. (For example, from Amazon.com.) Plrk (talk) 15:08, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi! the two latest images i've uploaded are just photographs..they are not copywrited and i know that since i am on one of them. Those two photos have no official commercial use and that is why i don't understand why would they be deleted. What can i do? Xarhtna (talk) 09:12, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

The copyright normally rests with either the photographer or the record label (or whatever) who hired them - not the people in the picture. Unless there is some evidence that the copyright has been released, or that you own the copyright I'm afraid the image will stay deleted. Thanks  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 18:49, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

Hello Mike,

You've cancelled a picture that I uploaded from Flickr. You can check it here, there is CC licence for the pic (CC Attribution Generic 2.0), so please, inform me, what the problem is with it. Thanks a lot. http://www.flickr.com/photos/seishin17/2154827380/

Sorry, the copyright doesn't belong to that person. Thus, they cannot release it under a free license. It is a copyright violation.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 18:48, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

So it wasn't true that he/she made it as a wallpaper. Thank you for your answer.

Hi! Why did you delete File:RBMK_Reaktorhallenaufbau.PNG (edit · last · history · watch · unwatch · global usage · logs · purge · w · search · links · DR · del · undel · Delinker log). This was a schematic drawing by uploader, rather different from what he had given as a source. This picture was deleted by you with the reason Copyright violation, but it's not because the photographer himself has created the image and uploaded it to commons, just like the other image he uploaded almost at the same time (File:Olivier karekezi.jpg) and other works by him. I request therefore that you restore this picture. beagle84 (talk) 11:08, 25 January 2009 (UTC)

Remove accounts

Hello, this is Deathgleaner. I have a few other accounts that got blocked because of FP "socking" or something like that. Could you remove or vanish those accounts?

Deathgleaner (talk) 15:25, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

There's no need to do anything with them.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 15:31, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

To make the whitelist entries show up preformatted, you should either put the <pre> tag on a comment line or, easier yet, just indent all the entries by one space. The way you've done it now sort of works, but the "<!--leave this line as-is--><pre>" actually gets parsed as a whitelist entry. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 22:21, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

I'm wondering why it doesn't for the blacklist then... Will fix it one way or another. Thanks for the heads-up.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 22:24, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

Yes, of course is free the picture. The only thing that i modify is the make up and the pixels. What's going on? --IPoedo (talk) 03:27, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

Why do you delete that?. --IPoedo (talk) 03:28, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
The file is © Insight News & Features, Inc. and is therefore not permitted on Commons.  — Mike.lifeguard 03:38, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
That's complete lie!!!. This picture was taken by my brother on Italy in 2004. --IPoedo (talk) 12:13, 5 February 2009 (UTC) P.D: Ok, perfect, with that i know the "really" work from the commons.
Actually, the metadata states this. I'm not really sure what to tell you...  — Mike.lifeguard 12:37, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
How say that?. The image was named "copyright", only for a few make up which i add in paint shop. I'm going to upload the pic, cause this is the pic, in the infobox, from the spanish and italian wikipedia. So, i upload with the makeup? or without? --IPoedo (talk) 16:03, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
The image metadata clearly states that the image is copyrighted. If you have further questions, please ask on COM:UNDEL.  — Mike.lifeguard 17:37, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

Hi!. So, nobody answered me on the page that you bring me on. I'm going to upload the pic with make up. Really, i need the pic, and if is mine (practically) i upload the pic. Thanks! --IPoedo (talk) 13:45, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

If you do that, it will be deleted again and you will probably be blocked.  — Mike.lifeguard 17:04, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

Misspelled category name (needs to be renamed)

While tagging categories for CfD, I ran across one that is obviously misspelled and needs to be renamed: Category:Carelton College should be Category:Carleton College. Can you please fix this? (Please let me know if there is a specific procedure for this kind of thing. I did not find a procedure for speedying a category name...) --Orlady (talk) 17:35, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

I changed my mind, after discovering that the correctly spelled category also exists. This one could/should be changed to Category:National Register of Historic Places at Carleton College. I guess that one needs to go to CfD. --Orlady (talk) 17:38, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

Voting (possibly for POTY)?

I got unblocked about two months ago. One of the restrictions to my unblock was to not vote, but when can I be able to vote again? I can't vote from my sockpuppets anyway, since they are blocked. Deathgleaner (talk) 21:19, 14 February 2009 (UTC)

I seem to recall the restriction being 6 months. You should not vote in POTY this year. Thanks  — Mike.lifeguard 21:25, 14 February 2009 (UTC)

Just wondering

Why was this unneeded? There is an admin where the rule If the user requests retention of the rights they must make five admin actions within the following six months or the rights will be removed without further question. would have applied since they have not made the required five admin actions since they were informed about it last inactivity round and where thus the admin right should have been revoked without further question: OldakQuill. And also there is Jdforrester, who already lost it last time, then requested them back and once again did not make the five actions (only 2). -- Cecil (talk) 22:09, 15 February 2009 (UTC)

Yes, you're right - I'll add that back in with those users. Thanks for your vigilance.  — Mike.lifeguard 22:25, 15 February 2009 (UTC)
Hm, Jdforrester has made admin. actions that doesn't show in the log, namely closing DR's as kept as well as deleted two. He's therefor just over the 5 edit limit. (Should probably post this somewhere else, but didn't quite know where...) Regards, Finn Rindahl (talk) 00:19, 16 February 2009 (UTC)

Images

Since you have the time to mass revert so many images, many of which are simply coloured version of black and white, unsourced images. I trust you also have the time to upload fresh new versions of said images. Thanks. - Thomas Gun (talk) 18:11, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

No, I won't. You made a mess quite knowingly and I am simply cleaning it up. If you continue, you'll find your ability to participate here removed.  — Mike.lifeguard 18:12, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

Following

Hello you can stop following my edits now around now and attacking /reverting any edits I make to gallleries. Take the tinkering with the work on Pope for example. The purpose as per the creator Grenavitar on the talk is to create one tab per Pope and a link to each specific Popes page, set out like it is on President of the United States. I'd appreciate if you completely leave me alone from now on. We do not see eye to eye, as we have found, so this could be constructed as cyber bulling if you persist. Its best you get on with something constructive and leave me alone to get on with work here. Thanks. - Thomas Gun (talk) 04:37, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

Shocked to be blocked

You seem to have blocked my account, User:Qp10qp. I'd be grateful if you could reverse this, please, as it must have been a mistake (I'm a long-standing and innocuous uploader of old art!) Many thanks.

The reason given in the block log is abusing multiple accounts. My guess is that it's something to do with aol's shared IPs, but I always thought Mozilla got round that issue (I've never been blocked before). I've also left an unblock request at the administrators' noticeboard, in case you aren't around. 92.16.243.117 18:39, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

Mike, I need another favor from you. Can you delete File:Jesse Jackson.jpg? ALthough it is available on a government site, I found out it is still not free to use. Can you also do me a favor and delete File:Sam Brownback official portrait 2 headshot.jpg, File:Huckabee Headshot.jpg and File:Tom Tancredo, official Congressional photo cropped.jpg? I made sure they are no longer being used. They were terrible crops by me and I dont want them in my gallery. Thanks for the time - Rockyobody (talk) 02:29, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

The first one is done. For the other three, I'd rather see a DR. Or better yet, just replace them with better crops of the original files.  — Mike.lifeguard 02:54, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
Well they are not currently in use so cant we just delete them?
No, being used isn't required. Probably most of our images aren't being used - that's not a reason to delete them. Feel free to open a DR at your convenience.  — Mike.lifeguard 23:10, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
I guess I could put out a DR, but if you're not going to delete them, I doubt someone else will. The only reason I want it deleted is because I dont want them in my gallery. - Rockyobody (talk) 22:56, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

I had a little chat with Vitorvicentevalente (talk · contributions · Move log · block log · uploads · Abuse filter log. He would like to be unblocked, claiming that he isn't going to upload more pictures. He will have to seek our advice about future uploads if he wants to upload more. Given this, is it ok with you to lift the block? Cheers, Patrícia msg 21:07, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

If you think it's right to do so, of course.  — Mike.lifeguard 01:29, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

IP block

Please would you unblock 82.42.237.84 (talk · contribs) for me - any IPs within 82.32.0.0/12 range are dynamic ones, from what I know. Some have been open proxies (82.42.237.84 appeared to have been listed at proxy.org between 2006 and up until now, but it's no longer there - the proxy appears to be closed now from what I can tell - http://82.42.237.84 doesn't show anything!). There is a good user from that IP (as far as I know), but he's more of a lurker than a real contributor. Also, if anyone blocks 195.188.* IPs they are shared, and although they are used for vandalism, it won't always be the same person.

Ta, --Obesky (talk) 21:29, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

Sorry - why do you need the IP unblocked?  — Mike.lifeguard 21:36, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

Warning

Please stop your vandalism like this. Every svg-version of this one and other original coat of arms by Mantzsch are copyright violations. Thanks and regards Rauenstein (talk) 05:54, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

How acute have you checked the origin of the above picture? On the according Flickr-Page is a link to its real origin, where the author says that all rights are reserved. I can see no evidence that the flickr-poster and the author are the same person. Do you have any? If you have, make an according note, otherwise the image should be deleted on commons. --Gnu1742 (talk) 10:11, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

It is deleted. Thanks for your vigilance.  — Mike.lifeguard 20:58, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

You might want to answer personally ;). Patrícia msg 17:19, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

not actually blocked.....???? --Herby talk thyme 17:52, 30 March 2009 (UTC)
It's probably included in the 75.175.224.0/19 block Mike did some days ago (I don't really know because I didn't bother to check if it's included in the /19 range, so it's a wild guess). Patrícia msg 18:29, 30 March 2009 (UTC)
Looks likely - I'll go back to just "watching" pages ...;) --Herby talk thyme 18:33, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

Thanks - handling it now.  — Mike.lifeguard 19:25, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

What makes you think this is not my image?

Toglenn (talk) 07:54, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

Sorry, there was someone uploading a very similar set of images which were copyright violations at the same time & I mixed yours in with that set by accident.  — Mike.lifeguard 19:07, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

No Problem, thank for the reply, Mike. :) Toglenn (talk) 21:30, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

Old DR

Hey Mike,

You handled Commons:Deletion requests/Image:Biamyinmd masturbating while pregnant.jpg half a year ago: can File:Biamyinmd masturbating while pregnant 3.JPG and File:Biamyinmd pregnant spreading.JPG be deleted per that DR and therefore also closing Commons:Deletion requests/Image:Biamyinmd pregnant spreading.JPG? I'm not sure on how to handle this yet. Ciell (talk) 12:41, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

I didn't delete that image.  — Mike.lifeguard 12:49, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

Just curious why you deleted a file with OTRS permission. I can understand if you believe it the band is non-notable and outside of the project scope, and so on, but you deleted it based on a copyvio. Is the imagery used derivative work or something like that? Or was I mistaken in adding the OTRS tag and the uploader isn't the copyright holder?-Andrew c (talk) 12:08, 4 April 2009 (UTC)

Replied by email. Undeleted.  — Mike.lifeguard 17:56, 4 April 2009 (UTC)
Thanks.-Andrew c (talk) 19:26, 4 April 2009 (UTC)

Kwik-E-Mart

I think you should reconsider the result of the deletion request at Commons:Deletion requests/Image:7-Eleven and Kwik-E-Mart.jpg (note: it's from a year ago). User N stated that freedom of panorama is allowed in Canada, the country where was photo was took, but did you check the conditions stated in that section? The limits mentioned, when such freedom of Panorama would not apply, seem clearly to represent the case of this image more than the "building or structure or any model of a building or structure" or "sculpture or work of artistic craftsmanship" described. Check more deeply the policy, don't limit the attention to the "ok" sign at Canada, and reconsider if the closing was correct. I think that keeping that image was a mistake Belgrano (talk) 02:42, 5 April 2009 (UTC)

No, Canadian FOP permits such photographs. Feel free to open a DR if you need to.  — Mike.lifeguard 15:55, 5 April 2009 (UTC)

Digary¿Yanapa? 20:20, 4 April 2009 (UTC)

I'm sorry, I don't understand why an email can't be sent to OTRS?  — Mike.lifeguard 15:57, 5 April 2009 (UTC)
Saludos.Digary¿Yanapa? 18:19, 6 April 2009 (UTC)
OK, I will place {{OTRS pending}} and we will wait for the email to be handled.  — Mike.lifeguard 18:27, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

Need Help

Hello Mike.Lifeguard I need some help getting the right copyright on a logo.

P.S. sorry for repeatedly uploading the same image I have also created some pages like Holiday Inn Garden Court, Holiday Inn Sunspree Resorts & Holiday Inn Select

Those logos are copyrighted by the various hotel chains. As such, they are not suitable for uploading to Commons. You may wish to see w:en:WP:FAIRUSE.  — Mike.lifeguard 04:17, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

Logos

Hello Mike, I have just a tiny question but how do other users get a company logo for, say Reckitt Beckiser and not get copyright lawed, so - to - speak.

Bye

That's a question to ask someone on English Wikipedia - fair use is not permitted at Commons.  — Mike.lifeguard 03:18, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

Wikibooks question

Does Wikiboosk have book(s) about green lifestyle (something like this)? I tried to search but probably my keywords were wrong. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 02:38, 10 April 2009 (UTC)

I've not seen one, but you might do better to ask User:SB_Johnny, who works on horticulture-related books.  — Mike.lifeguard 04:26, 10 April 2009 (UTC)
Thank you for help! --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:47, 10 April 2009 (UTC)

Email

Would you please enable email?  — Mike.lifeguard 18:58, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

Sorry, but I don't communicate by email concerning wiki stuff. Can I ask why the need for email? --Timeshifter (talk) 23:58, 6 April 2009 (UTC)
Can I ask what your relationship is to Omega933, Aspiringnomad and Falastine fee Qalby is, or why they needed you to create their userpages?  — Mike.lifeguard 00:27, 7 April 2009 (UTC)
It is something I do sometimes for users in order to encourage them to start a user page. I put a period on the page. I don't ask them first. I find that many users are intimidated by unstarted redlinked user pages. I am a volunteer admin also at Wikia, and I do it on every user page I see on the particular wiki I work on. Can I ask why you are investigating me? --Timeshifter (talk) 00:39, 7 April 2009 (UTC)
It's just "weird"  — Mike.lifeguard 00:54, 7 April 2009 (UTC)
OK, I think. --Timeshifter (talk) 01:05, 7 April 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for reviewing the unblock request and taking the reasonable course of action. I will avoid getting into drama here...I had no idea that Timeshifter started my page, but I think it is normal compared to me fixing spelling in other people's posts. [2][3]. Thanks -Falastine fee Qalby (talk) 19:35, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

Hi Mike,

I don't know if I'm writing this to the correct person. If not, perhaps you could direct me to the appropriate person. The question is in relation to an image I have seen on an external un-related website (here) that is currently using the wikipedia logo as a logo belonging to themselves. Would you know if the company in particular has obtained any rights for the usage of the image?

Kind regards, MacTire02 (talk) 23:23, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the notice - I've emailed Mike Godwin (the Wikimedia Foundation's counsel).  — Mike.lifeguard 04:10, 12 April 2009 (UTC)

Hi Mike, you just {{Blocked}} COM:AN/U, I took the liberty of reformatting your post there ;) Finn Rindahl (talk) 05:46, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

Why were these pics nominated for deletion?

Specifically File:Lenore Blum.jpeg and File:Paul Bernays.jpeg. ticket:2008042410024381 is supposed to be a general release for the category of OFW pics by Bergman. If that's no longer valid, please let me know -- I've been uploading pics of mathematicians for bios on en-wikipedia. (the nom only referenced an OTRS ticket, and I don't know what it says). version deletion?

Hi Mike,
is it possible to delete single versions out of a user talkpage history? On :de this is called Versionslöschung, but I don't know how it's called in english. The page in question is the talkpage of Jimbo on Commons. To me it seems appropriate to remove the 2 first versions from April 15, that contain statements on the page and in the edit summary that constitute libel and were added by an IP. If this kind of selective deletion is possible for admins, then how? --Túrelio (talk) 06:19, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

Yes, it's possible, but only oversighters have access to the feature. I'll forward this to them now.  — Mike.lifeguard 17:32, 15 April 2009 (UTC)
When message templates are autotranslated, they do not need any more to be substed if they do not create a new section on the user page. This is because even if you substitute them, you'll just get the autotranslation template call instead, which do not ensure you that the wording of the template won't change in the future.
Your message make me think that I should document this on Commons:Template_i18n/User_templates too.
Thanks to Rocket000 and you for your helpful comments!
Best regards from France,
-- AlNo (discuter/talk/hablar/falar) 07:48, 17 April 2009 (UTC)
Yes, that is a major problem with the autotranslate template. It should subst the level below, instead of transcluding it.  — Mike.lifeguard 17:02, 17 April 2009 (UTC)
Well, if it was subst'ing the level below, the template text would be hard-written on the talk page in the language of the user putting the template, and would therefore be not able to switch to the languages defined by the following readers... -- AlNo (discuter/talk/hablar/falar) 08:03, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
Yes, I suppose it would. I wonder why we haven't implemented js switching here.  — Mike.lifeguard 15:47, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
