Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Identities[edit]

Hi Meneerke - these two pics File:Pinus pinaster immature cones 01.jpg and File:Pinus pinaster male cones 01.jpg are of two different trees of two different species ;-) In immature cones 01.jpg, note the nearly white bud scales (on the shoot tips) which are straight, and in male cones 01.jpg, note the dark orange-red bud scales, which are strongly recurved. The first is Pinus nigra, whereas the second is Pinus pinea or Pinus pinaster (hard to tell which, but the needle length and thickness is closer to P. pinea). Also compare the needle basal sheaths, long and pale in immature cones 01.jpg, and short and dark in male cones 01.jpg. Hope this helps! - MPF (talk) 09:55, 21 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! The Bay of the Somme is not too far north for Pinus pinea (in cultivation, it is hardy north to at least 56°N in southern Scotland), but if the crown is the wrong shape, then I'm happy with it being P. pinaster. - MPF (talk) 16:36, 21 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Picea breweriana[edit]

Hi Meneerke - thanks! I thought I could see the shoots should be pendulous from the background as well, but I am happy to accept your orientation of them. I'm not sure what's happened to File:Picea breweriana (flowers).jpg, from the file history your original upload was correctly oriented, but it was rotated by someone else on 15 December 2011; I instructed rotatebot to rotate it back again yesterday, but the page history is showing that rotatebot is not working at the moment, so it didn't work. It probably means your rotatebot instruction won't work either. But what is even stranger, is if I click on the thumbnail of your original 15 April 2009 upload, it still comes up mis-rotated. That I do not understand! PS are you also finding Commons to be extremely slow today? I am finding it hard to view any images; they take several minutes to upload, instead of the usual few seconds :-( MPF (talk) 19:15, 21 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sternbergia lutea[edit]

Bonjour, Reginald. --JLPC (talk) 13:22, 9 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you[edit]

Image:Picea breweriana cones01.jpg is in this week on Estonian wikipedia Main page, because en:Picea breweriana is the article of the week. Thank you for nice picture! Taivo (talk) 23:22, 24 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Bonjour Réginald, Je viens de recevoir ce message : Hi Ghislain - do you have locations for File:Cytisus purgans 1.jpg, File:Cytisus purgans 2.jpg, File:Cytisus purgans 3.jpg, File:Cytisus purgans 4.jpg, File:Cytisus purgans 5.jpg, please? "Cytisus purgans" is no longer an accepted species name, and plants so named are either Cytisus oromediterraneus (if in France, or central & northern Spain), or Cytisus balansae (if in southern Spain or NW Africa). Thanks! - MPF (talk) 13:25, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

Lilium bulbiferum[edit]

Dear Réginald,
I noticed your (deleted) message regarding my recently uploaded fire lily photos. The determination feature of the bulbils is not very reliable, unfortunately. Even the subspecies/variety croceum often has bulbils, but not as many as bulbiferum. Also, the blossom's color is more orange instead of red and the typical locations are sandy fields in the plains instead of rocky spots in the hill country. My photos were taken in the northern German lowlands. The site has long been known among botanists and is considered to be one of the most important ones. The Dutch Fire Lily specialist Fred Bos comes to visit there regularly. So, I think, the determination of the subspecies is absolutely confirmed.
Best regards, Fice (talk) 10:00, 11 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Fice,
I have deleted my own message because I realised that I was wrong, when I saw that your pictures were indeed of the (true) var. croceum, which is present (and threatened!) in the rye field of Northern Netherlands and Germany.
I have met the Lilium bulbiferum var. croceum in the French Alps, with light orange flowers and no bulblets, and the var. bulbiferum in the Dolomites, with orange-red flowers and a lot of bulblets.
Best regards, --Réginald alias Meneerke bloem (To reply) 16:28, 11 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Réginald, I stumble on this discussion by chance. Centaurea dealbata was first described by Carl Ludwig Willdenow 1765-1812. It was later reassigned by Karl (Carl) Heinrich Emil (Ludwig) Koch 1809-1879. The information on Wiki commons (Category:Psephellus dealbatus includes C. dealbata as a synonym, while Category:Centaurea does not include C. dealbata) is not consistent with Wikipedia (which does not have an entry on Psephellus, nor is it listed as a synonym of Centaurea, while C. dealbata (vernacular names Persian Cornflower, Whitewash Cornflower) has its own entry and is listed as assigned to Centaurea). This is confusing and inconsistent. The question is what the pervailing opinion is about the validity of the genus Psephellus. I am not an insider, but this article suggests that Psephellus is accepted. So does this website. I hope this helps. Met vriendelijke groet, Dwergenpaartje (talk) 11:11, 22 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Cyclamen hederifolium in Sardinia[edit]

Hello, you categorized my as yet unidentified Cyclamen image from Sardinia as C. hederifolium. If you are sure about the identification I will rename the file and alter the description accordingly. I'd appreciate a brief notice either here or on my own discussion page. Thanks in advance, --Pjt56 (talk) 17:26, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! --Pjt56 (talk) 09:12, 18 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, so far I knew Cyclamen only as a potted plant. Interesting to learn that it also grows easily in gardens. I have to try it! Thanks again, --Pjt56 (talk) 15:40, 19 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Dracunculus vulgaris[edit]

greetings Meneerke bloem. It is not a native plant of Ireland but it has established here.see Reynolds, S.C.P. (2002). A catalogue of alien plants in Ireland. pp. [4], 1-413. Dublin: National Botanical Gardens, Glasnevin.I have placed it in a new category (Introduced species (Ireland). Is this ok with you? My object is to provide habitus/close-up illustrations of all the flowering plant species found in Ireland regardless of where they were photographed. Thanks for the hint.Best regards Notafly (talk) 20:33, 10 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

New Message and need for some assistance[edit]

I am back online after three years off the internet, sorry I could not get in touch with you. Hello again and thanks for keeping in touch, I think it was Linkedin? There was some confusion while I was gone and some @#$# on Wikipedia has banned me so now I can't edit there?? I am currently uploading botanical photos related to a 1980 manuscript on Botanical Gardens of Canada which is an article on Wikipedia called List of botanical gardens in Canada. As I am unable to attach photos to theaarticles I had written, could you place some relevant ones for me? E-mail me at materia @ live.ca Thanks so much and hope you are doing well. Juniperus sabina locations[edit]

Hi Meneerke - thanks for adding the location data! It is one of those species very common in cultivation but rarely photographed in the wild, so in the absence of location data, I assumed it was likely cultivated. Whereabouts is Queyras? A bit more detail would be invaluable ;-) MPF (talk) 10:06, 13 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

File:Colchicum alpinum RHu004.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Leea > Anacardium[edit]

Hi! The following photos require some attention:

Long time ago, I came across these photos and recognized that they could not be Leea guineensis. However, I could not tell which species actually this is. Recently having seen flowers of Anacardium occidentale, it is quite clear to me now, that at least it is the same genus. I would not hesitate to identify these photos as A. occidentale, if they were taken in Africa or tropical Asia, but you might have visited tropical America at some occasion. As far as I know, all species of Anacardium are neotropical and only A. occidentale is cultivated at a wide scale also in the Old World. Anyway, you will know where these photos come from.
