Category change - Culgoa_War_Memorial_Sundial

Hi Mattinbgn

I see that you made some changes to the categories attached to this image. This might have been done in error, so may I explain the changes that I made: If you visit Category:Sundials in Australia, you will see three distinct types of entry:

  • Images of various sundials
  • Subcategories - one per sundial (where there are multiple images of the same sundial)
  • One subcategory that links to a list of sundials "Vertical sundials in Australia".

The list category is clearly out of place, every other category refers to a single sundial. Previously your image was also included in the parent category, but for some reason DeFacto chose to create a category "Vertical sundials in Australia" and move your image into that category. I restored it, but you seem to have followed DeFacto's lead.

May I draw your attention to this paragraph where the concept of simplicity is emphasised. In my view, the category "Vertical sundials in Australia" is redundant - there is no category "Horizontal sundials in Australia", nor is there one "Equatorial sundials in Australia" - the category "Sundials in Australia" is small enough to contain all the images.

My own interest is that I introduced a new category "Sundials in the Southern Hemishpere" which I plan to rename "Sundials with Southern Hemisphere Characteristics" (or something similar). The specific thing that I was looking at was horizintal and vertical sundials that are the reverse of northern hemisphere sundials. (I have lived in both South Africa and in the UK, and in both coutries I learened to navigatge by the sun.) Originally I linked "Sundials in Australia" to this category, but I now realise that I should have done this on a sundial-by-sundial basis.

If you undo your changes and your image will be back in the category "Sundials in AUstralia" to where it was a few weeks ago with the catgegory "Sundials in the Southern Hemishpere" added to it, not to its parent.

Regards

Martinvl

Thanks for your comment. I disagree that the category Category:Vertical sundials in Australia should refer only to lists. The category should contain all images of vertical sundials from Australia and it does. The fact that categories do not yet exist for horizontal sundials in Australia etc. does not mean that the vertical sundial category is redundant. Agree with Mattinbgn also. Bidgee (talk) 09:49, 8 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi, Matt! I just created the article Dalby War Memorial and Gates and I went to add your photo when I noticed that there isn't a digger statue (which there should be). I took a look at Monument Australia and I think your photo is this monument to Joshua Thomas Bell. If you agree with me, can you rename it or else I can do it (but I think requests from the original uploader are less contentious). Kerry Raymond (talk) 21:28, 1 March 2016 (UTC)

You are exactly right! Lazy and careless of me. I will fix. Thanks for the heads up and great work on the QHR project too! -- Mattinbgn (talk)

Lake Rowan War Memorial Lone Pine

Howdy! I've been looking at the Category:Lone Pine (tree) and the article en:Lone Pine (tree). Despite File:Lake Rowan War Memorial Lone Pine 001.JPG having a plaque that says it's a lone pine, to me it doesn't look anything like all of the other lone pines. What do you think? Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 11:42, 11 February 2017 (UTC)

Hi. I am happy to be guided by you. I know very little of botany and was purely relying on the plaque. Having said that, I do think trees that claim to be "lone pines" need categorisation ins one sense, even if a botanist would rule them out. Also, I am aware of the potential for offense that may be caused when denying a claim to having a lone pine. A visitor to Finley in the Riverina accused the local council and the RSL sub-branch of deceitfully claiming the following as a lone pine - File:Finley Memorial Park Lone Pine.JPG and File:Finley Memorial Park Lone Pine Plaque.JPG. Needless to say it did not go down too well with locals. In my opinion, we should be careful and very sure of our facts before dismissing any claim of "lone pine" status. Cheers, Mattinbgn (talk) 23:14, 11 February 2017 (UTC)
LOL! If I were in a position to guide you, I'd be making stronger statements and/or asking stronger questions than "What do you think?" I agree with your summary. (However, the Finley tree at least looks like the right species.) Not only does the Lake Rowan tree not look like the right species, but the photo caption says it's a Juniperus chinensis 'Torulosa' tree, which is not the same species as the Lone Pine. I see the species caption was added by User:MPF in December 2012 - i.e. no-one seems to have complained in the last four years and it doesn't appear on any page that claims it's a Lone Pine. As you imply, perhaps the best solution is to "let sleeping dogs lie". Thanks for your reply. Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 02:27, 12 February 2017 (UTC)
Nah, I dont lie (that often) - there is one at File:SunsetAnzacEveBlackboyHill2010.jpg - that is claimed to be from a pine nut/seed from Lone Pine in Blackboy Hill - Greenmount, Western Australia - hope that muddies things for you folks JarrahTree (talk) 08:02, 12 February 2017 (UTC)
@Pdfpdf: @Mattinbgn: @JarrahTree: Coming at this from a botanical standpoint, I guess the question 'What constitutes a "lone pine"?' needs to be raised. In a strict sense, it should only be allocated to seedlings (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. generation) of the original tree on the battlefield at Gallipoli. If so, then it has to be a Turkish Pine Pinus brutia - and many of the trees currently in the category are not that. Some are outrageous errors; as mentioned, File:Lake Rowan War Memorial Lone Pine 001.JPG is a Chinese Juniper Juniperus chinensis, while File:Finley Memorial Park Lone Pine.JPG is an Arizona Cypress Cupressus glabra. Several others are pines, but not Turkish Pine (e.g. File:Balranald Anzac Park Lone Pine 001.JPG is an Aleppo Pine Pinus halepensis, and File:Lone Pine cemetery May 2002.jpg is a Stone Pine Pinus pinea). Yes, I can see that some might be offended to be told that their treasured tree is not genuine, but I think one has to face up to facts - these are not descended in any way from seeds brought back by returning soldiers, and their owners have been defrauded by whoever gave / sold them their trees (as an aside here, I'd not accuse the Finley council or RSL sub-branch of deceit - far more likely victims of fraud, than perpetrators). Perhaps a subcategory 'Misidentified Lone Pines' could be started to include the trees that were planted as labelled lone pines, but which have proven to be something different? - MPF (talk) 19:01, 12 February 2017 (UTC)
@Pdfpdf: @Mattinbgn: @JarrahTree: @MPF: Mattinbgn: Thanks for indulging me. As the conversation now has a broader audience, now is probably a good time to move it to Category talk:Lone Pine (tree), so I have done so. Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 11:34, 13 February 2017 (UTC)

Random question / observation (of very low priority and no great importance)

Why is your talk page categorised with "Sundials in Australia"? Pdfpdf (talk) 11:38, 13 February 2017 (UTC)

Non-attributed use of photos

Hey, fellow Wikimedian. This week I discovered that "The Gippslander" newspaper had reused one of my photos from Wikimedia ("20050827 South Gippsland Hills In Morning Mist.jpg") without attribution (Page 5 of their Feb-2017 issue). On checking the photo above mine on the same page, I discovered that it, too, was from Wikimedia, and was one of your photos ("Leongatha Anglican Church.JPG").
I've sent the editors of "The Gippslander" an e-mail gently reminding them that Wikimedia contributors such as us are generally happy to contribute our works freely, and are happy for them to be re-used freely, provided that we receive the simple recognition of attribution.
I thought that you'd like to know that your photo had been reused in that manner and also that I'd included you in my comments to the editors. Ian Fieggen (talk) 00:38, 17 February 2017 (UTC)

Thanks very much for letting me know. Much appreciated. Let's hope it is received in the manner intended and future use comes with attribution. -- Mattinbgn (talk) 01:48, 17 February 2017 (UTC)

Coolamon

Hope all is well! Thanks for fixing Category:Coolamon Shire! Planning on heading to Coolamon tomorrow or Friday for a couple of hours, trying to mark locations to photograph and will be heading back to Leeton via the Canola Way for further photography. Farmers Home Hotel's future in Matong is unknown, I do know there is/was a demolition order placed on it! :( Bidgee (talk) 08:51, 13 December 2017 (UTC)

Cheers! I still have a heap of photos to upload from last month. Looking forward to seeing the photos of Coolamon etc. Will be a tragedy if the Farmers Arms is demolished. -- Mattinbgn (talk) 02:37, 17 December 2017 (UTC)
No problem! Still have to edit most of them that were taken with the DSLR, which will take time :(. Also found this Bills horse trough in Ganmain! Bidgee (talk) 12:23, 17 January 2018 (UTC)
Excellent! Made my day with that find. -- Mattinbgn (talk) 20:18, 17 January 2018 (UTC)

Please consider adding iw-links here on Commons

Dear Mattingbgn,

Thanks for creating new categories here on Commons as you did recently for Category:Stuart River (Queensland). It would be great if you could as well add the interwiki-link to the corresponding page on en-wikipedia by clicking here on commons in the sidebar menu under 'In Wikipedia' on 'Add links' and then putting in the appearing pop-up box the link to the corresponding article on en-wikipedia. This will add a link to commons to all language versions of the corresponding article on en-wikipedia. Moreover this will avoid the corresponding article to be included in the maintenance category en:Category:Commons category template with no category set.

Many thanks if you could consider to do so, indeed this would reduce my efforts on adding these iw links later through patrolling the pages listed on the pre-mentioned category on en-wikipedia. I would like to thank you for all the great work you are realizing on en-wikipedia and here on commons.

If you have any further questions on this do not hesitate to contact me. Best regards and already now my very best wishes for you for the New Year.Robby (talk) 08:04, 1 January 2018 (UTC)

Image: Grandstand at Central Park Stawell - Request to use

Hi Mattinbgn

I am writing to seek your permission to use your photo of the Grandstand at Central Park in Stawell in a 1200-word article I am writing for the Heraldry and Genealogical Society of Canberra (HAGSOC)’s quarterly magazine “The Ancestral Searcher”. The article is about using heritage plans and registers for family history research. My grandfather, Albert Henry Barnes built the grandstand in 1899 and you have an excellent photo of it.

You will of course be acknowledged as the source of the photo in the article, i.e. "Courtesy of Mattinbgn, Wikimedia Commons" or whatever you prefer.

For your information HAGSOC was established in 1964. Its current membership is just over 800, which includes members from surrounding districts outside the Australian Capital Territory, such as Queanbeyan, Yass, Murrumbateman and Bungendore. All members receive a copy of the quarterly magazine which is not available online.

I hope to hear from you.

Regards

Therese

Hi Therese. Thank you for your courtesy in asking permission to use my photograph. You are quite welcome to use the photograph (I assume the one on the right) as you see fit subject to attribution. Your attribution as above would be fine. Thanks for the kind words and good luck with your article. -- Mattinbgn (talk) 04:14, 14 January 2018 (UTC)

Hi Mattinbgn Many thanks for your prompt response and approval. It is much appreciated. Yes, this the photo in question. Cheers Therese

Category discussion warning

Hotels and pubs in Australia has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!
