I've changed the green to light blue; let me know if that's still a problem - MPF (talk) 16:54, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

Filemover rights

I have given you the new filemover rights, at this stage we are looking at ways on how the files will be changed on other Wiki's as you can't (sysop's can) use CommonsDelinker bot (User:CommonsDelinker/commands) to change the file names (e.g badname.jpg --> goodname.jpg) without having to do it manually, but thought it could be handy at this stage to fix your own files.

Please see COM:AN#Implementation of rename right and Commons:Village pump#Let's add a rename user right. Bidgee (talk) 13:37, 18 May 2010 (UTC)

Thanks! Will be very handy, especially with my own upload typos :) Mattinbgn/talk 20:39, 18 May 2010 (UTC)

File mover

The functionality of the template {{Rename}} has recently changed. You might need to clear your cache to see the changes. If successful you should then be able to use the new "Quick adding" link in the template to instruct CommonsDelinker to replace the old name with the new name in all wikis. Please use that every time you rename a file. If further questions arise, feel free to write on my talk page --DieBuche (talk) 10:00, 2 June 2010 (UTC)

It is great

To see some hard work being done in managing australian files and categories - well done! pity real life has me by the vital parts at the moment - thank you for your hard work and time!!! SatuSuro (talk) 03:21, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

Thanks! It filled a quiet weekend in for me at least. I will be busy also for the next few months as well. Sigh ... -- Mattinbgn/talk 03:37, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

Could you?

Hi Matt, Could you deal with this? Bidgee (talk) 07:45, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

Edithburgh South Australia images - historic buildings

  • File:EdithburghShop1.JPG

This building was previously a Bank on Edith Street Edithburgh and is situated next to the old Edithburgh RSL. I am unsure which bank occupied the building, possible the Bank of South Australia. As far as I know it has never operated as a shop at any time.

  • File:EdithburghShop2.JPG

This limestone building in your photo was the Edithburgh RSL. I don't think it was a shop at any time. The building is on Edith Street on the corner of Ansley Terrace. It almost opposite the the Police Station residence which is a little further to the East and next to the Police Station. It is currently a private residence, prior to this was an informal art gallery operated by a Peter McGlinchey an artist who was resident there. I am not sure when it was built and if it had any other use prior to being the site of the Edithburgh RSL.

  • File:EdithburghHouse.JPG

This is the old Harbour Masters house overlooking the Edithburgh Jetty and old Salt silo site at the eastern end of Edith Street Edithburgh. Now a private residence. Looks like it is being renovated in this shot.

  • File:EdithburghLocationCafe.JPG

This used to be a butchers shop on the corner of Edith and Blanch Street Edithburgh until maybe sometime into the late 1970's or early 1980's. It remained vacant for a long period and was then operated as a 'Chinese' restaurant. That then closed and it remained vacant for a time. It was then opened as the "Location Cafe" sometime around 2000.

Great body of work you have uploaded. Keep up the good work. Felix505 (talk) 17:57, 6 August 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. Where possible I try and verify buildings but sometimes I am unable to, and as such rely on the wiki process to provide more accurate descriptions. Feel free to edit the descriptions and I am happy to move the images to better names if needed. Cheers, Mattinbgn/talk 06:49, 8 August 2010 (UTC)

category Jervis Bay

Querying why you put Jervis Bay back in States and territories of Australia. Last time i checked it wasn't anything of the sort (a state or territory). I believe it belongs in NSW or just the sub cat of south coast NSW.Fairv8 (talk) 11:20, 26 October 2010 (UTC)fairv8

see en:Jervis Bay Territory for an explanation. -- Mattinbgn/talk 21:33, 26 October 2010 (UTC)

SLQ categorisation

Hi Matt, Thanks a heap for your categorisation work. The bot will automatically categorise images if the categories are added at Commons:State Library of Queensland/Subjects. John Vandenberg (chat)

Hi John. Sorry, your message is a little cryptic. I am not sure what I am supposed to do at Commons:State Library of Queensland/Subjects and how it is all going to work. If the content of the various sub-pages are going to be future categories, I think they need a lot of tidying. I am not a programming-type person and I have no idea how the bot will work to find the appropriate categories and therefore I am more than a little nervous about ripping in and doing anything there, even if I knew what I was doing. Also, is my manual categorisation actually helpful, or would you prefer me to get out of the way? Cheers, Mattinbgn/talk 10:35, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
See for example Commons:State_Library_of_Queensland/Subjects/non-alpha; the bot will match the subject in the first column (from the metadata) and add the categories in the second column to the uploaded image (both when it uploads the image, and retrospectively if the mapping is added after the upload). John Vandenberg (chat) 11:01, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
Manually adding categories is fine. I should be able to use the manually added categories to help build Commons:State Library of Queensland/Subjects. John Vandenberg (chat) 11:04, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
Aaah, that makes more sense ... Thanks, Mattinbgn/talk 21:07, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for you work on Commons:State Library of Queensland/Subjects/A, and all the manually adding of cats. I writing the code to extract the manually added cats now. --John Vandenberg (chat) 00:39, 18 December 2010 (UTC)
Can I add to the pat on the back for the work in this space. :-)  — billinghurst sDrewth 12:43, 20 December 2010 (UTC)

Hotels / pubs

Responded on my page to keep discussion together. Cheers, Ingolfson (talk) 23:25, 12 March 2011 (UTC)

Indeed it does (viz comment at Moondynes talk) - sorry about muddying the water at the the hotel category trying to subsume pub as a sub cat - now I see the bigger picture of what has been going on at various points - I dont know if I want to join in lest I confuse the issue further - I would never use the term pub myself after the work I have done in historical research in western tas and wa - I believe it is a furphy - but hey if a few of the other oz eds actually join in - then hey maybe we can learn something SatuSuro (talk) 01:46, 24 March 2011 (UTC)

I have left my comment at the central point - and just hope a breadth of ideas and constructive comments emanate - so far it seems quite uninspiring - I probably havent helped - cheers SatuSuro (talk) 01:56, 24 March 2011 (UTC)
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Palace_Hotel,_Perth is not currently anything but a bank building (although rumours are it will become a damned drinking place again (I will wash my mouth out with a middy for lunch if I use the damned term here) - so in specific detail - it is not currently a --- or a hotel - so there should also be a former... category as well SatuSuro (talk) 02:00, 24 March 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for participating in the discussion. I have been using "Pub" because I think using "Hotel" is misleading. The Royal Hotel in Berrigan may have a few rooms that it may rent out once in a while, but a hotel it aint. For better or worse, it is a pub P word! Cheers, Mattinbgn/talk 09:06, 24 March 2011 (UTC)

Sorry mate I am not much help - I wish it was easily solved - but hell... SatuSuro (talk) 10:02, 24 March 2011 (UTC)

thanks

thanks for adding additional cats to the images I've been uploading Gnangarra 04:24, 29 March 2011 (UTC)

Easier to do them as I see them uploaded than to trawl through categories later. Nice collection of photographs ... -- Mattinbgn/talk 04:41, 29 March 2011 (UTC)
Thanks, 105 so far another 35 today(last set will be Category:Wonnerup House) thats all the friday photos, then theres saturday and sundays photos but probably wont get to them before the weekend. Gnangarra 04:51, 29 March 2011 (UTC)
after of that I'll have to buy you and few others a couple of very cold ales. Gnangarra 04:51, 29 March 2011 (UTC)
I'll have to get over to WA for it! I have never been west of Wallaroo SA in my life. Actually I am quite keen to get over there and get around the small towns of the wheatbelt. Photographing small towns is one of my favourite activities. -- Mattinbgn/talk 07:32, 29 March 2011 (UTC)
cough cough (stage left, slightest whisper) get wmau to help you over here and we'll (you, gnang and self... do the whole wheatbelt? SatuSuro (talk) 11:36, 29 March 2011 (UTC)

It's worth considering ... -- Mattinbgn/talk`

If you want to throw together a proposal, I'm happy to take it to the committee, although I don't know how much funding is possible at the moment. :) It's the sort of thing I think we should be supporting. You could instead ask for up to $200 as a small grant, and that requires less work and is quick to approve. - Bilby (talk) 12:41, 29 March 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the offer, I will keep in mind. It is unlikely to happen in the short term though. I would need to arrange some leave. -- Mattinbgn/talk 07:39, 30 March 2011 (UTC)

Wangaratta

Hi Mattinbgn. My understanding is that the settlement of Wangaratta ceased to be a city in 1994, when the City of Wangaratta was abolished and merged into the Rural City of Wangaratta. Category:Cities in Victoria, Australia ultimately forms a subcategory of Category:Subdivisions and, as the settlement is no longer a subdivision, it shouldn't really be in the category for cities. However, it may be helpful to make Category:Rural cities in Victoria, Australia a subcategory of Category:Cities in Victoria, Australia, which would mean that the settlement could still be reached from the cities category. Alternatively, what has been done in other countries is to include a hatnote on the lines of See also Rural cities in Victoria, Australia at the top of the cities page. Skinsmoke (talk) 06:20, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

You've made a huge mess of the category system. First of all "Rural City" is only a name given to LGA which have a city located with the LGA and are not part of a capital city. Secondly having Category:Rural City/Shire of Foo, State isn't needed, ", State/Territory" is only needed if there is more then one category with the same name/article. Thirdly towns/villages categories should have the LGA they are located in added. Bidgee (talk) 07:10, 20 July 2011 (UTC)
(edit conflict) @ Skinsmoke. OK, the question you have asked deserves a long answer, because it is complicated. I have not got the time to answer it fully now but I promise I will. The basic point is that Local Government in Australia is fundamentally different to that in US and the UK. There is no functional difference between a Local Government Area called "City", "Shire" "Region" etc. All (within the same state) have the same powers and responsibilities. The use of the terms "City", "Town", "village"etc. has now in general become one of custom in Australia rather than law and the term "city" now basically means "large urban area" in Australian English - although some Australians may disagree with me. For example, there is no longer a en:City of Toowoomba (it was abolished in 2007) yet en:Toowoomba would still be referred to a city by all Australians. It is a little more complex than that too because of what Australia call suburbs, which are not necessarily (but may be) in a different local government area than their city - "suburb" in Australian English basically means "neighbourhood" rather than the US version. In short, it is more complex than it appears. I understand that Australia does not stand in isolation from the rest of the project but if we are going to make radical change (and what you have commenced is—good faith—radical change) I suggest we stop, discuss it widely and then proceed. I think change is necessary too, but in a different direction than you have planned. I am happy to take discussion to a central place if you wish. Cheers, [[user:Mattinbgn|Mattinbgn] (talk) 07:13, 20 July 2011 (UTC)
