Please stop[edit]

The files you are trying to delete were all in the public domain when they were uploaded. Magnolia677 (talk) 22:58, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I am the archivist for the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Canada, and I uploaded these images to our Flickr Commons site in error. The photographer was unknown for these photographs, but they are not pre-1949 and so under Canadian law, are not in the public domain. I have removed these images from both our Flickr Commons and History Pin sites for that reason, and they should be removed from Wikimedia Commons for the same reason. Marygk86 (talk) 23:04, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I did just clean up our Flickr Commons site to ensure all images uploaded to it are in the public domain. You are welcome to use anything on the site now. Marygk86 (talk) 23:18, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It would really have helped if you had stated that on the nominations at the time, rather than just contradicting what you had said earlier on Flickr. (Given that it would appear that these are all exactly the same issue, it also would have helped a lot if you had done this for one file as a test case, or done this as a proper "mass DR", instead of each of 60+ files having a separate discussion. I'm going to see what I can do to clean this up, but I'm not sure it can be done easily.) I take it you are new here. Please don't hesitate to ask a question on the help desk if you want to do something large again, it will probably save everyone including you a lot of trouble. - Jmabel ! talk 23:20, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much for this advice. I am brand new here, and I have never nominated any images for deletion before. All these images that I am nominating for deletion today are definitely not in the public domain. I do apologize for the errors in my lack of understanding of some copyright issues has led to this inconvenience. Thank you again for all your help. Marygk86 (talk) 23:31, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
One small point: you mention the 1949 cut-off date for Canadian photos, but Commons requires them to be free in the USA as well, which extended all foreign copyrights in effect as of the end of 1995. That means the effective cut-off for Canadian photos here is 1945.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 23:54, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Odysseus1479. Copyright is so difficult. We are really trying hard to ensure what we share is truly in the public domain, and that's why we've been doing this big cleanup. I am so sorry for the inconvenience. Marygk86 (talk) 23:58, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

PLEASE STOP[edit]

I told you that you were doing this wrong and that I would clean up after you. You are continuing to add to the mess. If you do not stop now, I will block your account. - Jmabel ! talk 00:38, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I did put a note on the Help desk to ask how to do a mass DR but I haven't had a reply. If you can tell me how to do this right, I will definitely follow your instructions. I will stop putting in nominations to delete now, and wait to get some guidance on how you want me to do this. Thank you. Marygk86 (talk) 00:41, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Please don't try to fix this yourself. Stop and let me catch up with you, then I can make it quite clear how to continue. Just give me another 30-45 minutes instead of adding to the mess so I keep having to chase after you! - Jmabel ! talk 00:42, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For sure. I will wait for you to advise me. I am sorry for any problems I have caused. You are doing such important work and I really am grateful. Marygk86 (talk) 00:44, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

OK. I finally could catch up. I see you have already spotted Commons:Deletion requests/Files from Congregation of Sisters of St. Joseph in Canada. If you have more files to add, please add them there, not the way you've been doing it. Ideally, on the respective file pages of the rest you nominate, you could paste the following (without the "nowiki" tags): {{delete|reason=Not in public domain.|subpage=Files from Congregation of Sisters of St. Joseph in Canada|year=2024|month=February|day=11}} That should give a link to the discussion.

Don't worry about notifying more individual uploaders at this point, I doubt there are any that you haven't notified a dozen times or more. I still have more cleanup to do, but at least this way you presumably won't be adding to it. - Jmabel ! talk 01:02, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think I see what you want me to do. I should follow the instructions on this page: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/Mass_deletion_request. I'll try to do that. Marygk86 (talk) 01:11, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
OK, while I was waiting I checked your page and you are a terrific photographer! Now, on the Commons:Deletion requests page, what do you want me to add - is it the URL for each image that I nominate for deletion? And where do I paste the string you provided ({{delete|reason=Not in public domain.|subpage=Files from Congregation of Sisters of St. Joseph in Canada|year=2024|month=February|day=11}}) on the file pages? I am sorry, but as you know, I have never done this before, and I don't want to create more work for you or anyone. Thanks again. Marygk86 (talk) 01:08, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

No, please do NOT start another mass deletion. I started one for you at Commons:Deletion requests/Files from Congregation of Sisters of St. Joseph in Canada. As I said, "If you have more files to add, please add them there, not the way you've been doing it." If there is some part of that you don't understand, just tell me what I need to make clearer. - Jmabel ! talk 01:43, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I understand now. So I just found only three more files and I will add them to Commons:Deletion_requests/Files_from_Congregation_of_Sisters_of_St._Joseph_in_Canada. I really apologize. Our thinking before in the archives had been that if the photographer was unknown, we could assume we owned the archival photos and could release them into the public domain. But now, being more cautious, we only will be sharing images that are pre-1945 if the photographer is unknown. Marygk86 (talk) 01:49, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

And let me try to be clearer about the {{Delete}} notice. If you look at one of the files you've already nominated, say, File:Lo-003-106 (29971623395).jpg, and you go into edit mode for that file page, you will see that at the top it says, {{delete|reason=Not in public domain. The photographer was unknown for these photographs, but they are not pre-1949 and so under Canadian law, are not in the public domain. I have removed these images from both our Flickr Commons and History Pin sites for that reason, and they should be removed from Wikimedia Commons. for the same reas|subpage=File:Lo-003-106 (29971623395).jpg|year=2024|month=February|day=11}}. That is what turns into a note linking to the deletion discussion. Obviously, when you add a filename by hand to Commons:Deletion requests/Files from Congregation of Sisters of St. Joseph in Canada, it won't magically create something like that; the bolded string above should ideally be placed the same way the tool you used before placed a similar notice.

I'm about to be out the door in a few minutes; it is Saturday evening and I have plans. - Jmabel ! talk 01:49, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Have a lovely evening and thank you so much for everything. I learned a lot from you today. Marygk86 (talk) 01:50, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Why are you deleting the images?[edit]

Why are you deleting the images? Have you consulted with a lawyer? Flickr Commons recognizes the right to declare images as "no known copyright restrictions". You are correct that they are not in the public domain but Flickr Commons was created so that images could be declared "no known copyright restrictions". Your peers at Flickr Commons have declared their collections to have "no known copyright restrictions" because donating the images came with donating any rights to the images. I think you are over reacting. Perhaps if you explained in more details your rationale and what legal advise you have been given. RAN (talk) 22:31, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Richard, Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Our goal is to clean up all our old uploads including incorrect metadata, poor quality scans, and to ensure only images that are truly in the public domain are uploaded to Historypin, Flickr Commons, and Wikimedia. We have deleted or requested deletion of images of concern from all these sites, and are now in the process of uploading better quality images that are truly in the public domain. We hope over the coming year to share a great many more images than were on these sites before. And yes, we are actually in the process of consulting with a lawyer to ensure that going forward, our copyright policy is much better than it was previously. 142.186.63.157 22:39, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Please use Perform batch task, this will allow you to nominate multiples files for deletion at once. Placing around fifty times (didn't count but seems so) a deletion message for the same set of files on someone's talk page and creating just as many separated deletion requests isn't good practice. You even caused MediaWiki to stop rendering the templates places at the bottom of the page because the page size became too large. Killarnee (talk) 16:30, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for this guidance. I am a new user, and obviously did this incorrectly. Apologies and I have gotten some very good feedback on how to do this in future. 142.116.119.161 19:42, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
