Non block

Something odd happened. You told -TrickTer- s/he was blocked, but there was no block. S/he uploaded another copyvio today so I actually blocked. Peculiar. Wknight94 talk 00:56, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

Oh, thank you, bad mistake :( You may remove my block notice and comment and replace it with your own if you want. --Martin H. (talk) 01:06, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
No, I don't care about that (although I went two weeks instead of one - it was his second block). Just wondered if there was a bug in the block tool or something. Wknight94 talk 01:40, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
No, I think my mistake. I use the regular block form and place block messages by hand, here I placed first the message and forgot to block. --Martin H. (talk) 01:42, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

noch eins...

Hallo.

-jkb- (talk) 01:27, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

Hey Martin. It is probably best to let another admin review any further unblock requests in regards to this user. That way he can be sure to get an impartial review. Cheers, Tiptoety talk 04:28, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

I would appreciate a review, but I would not call a request made so short after the block and made without any learning even a serious (or valid) request (esp. not the second) I placed the template {{Copyviouploadindefblock}} exactly with the intention that he learns and then uses this small chance, he skipped one step and asked too soon. --Martin H. (talk) 04:32, 7 October 2009 (UTC)
I agree, and just declined another request. I was just noting that it is probably best to let another administrator other than yourself review your block. Cheers, Tiptoety talk 04:35, 7 October 2009 (UTC)
Thank you, Tiptoety. --Martin H. (talk) 04:37, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

Re: The Badder in the World

Hi again. You helped me out with an issue earlier this year with a Flickr user uploading images with invalid licenses. Well he, or someone with similar interests, has done it again. I created a section at Commons_talk:Questionable_Flickr_images#The_Badder_in_the_World.

Thanks in advance for your help again! Mshake3 (talk) 06:11, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

Re: Banknotes

Hi Martin. Only I have the permission from the Central Bank of Malta (Commons_talk:Currency#Malta). Actually, I'm waiting the reply from the central banks of Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary, Mauritania, Croatia and South Africa. The banknotes of franc CFA you are asking about, the permission was sent to the BEAC in Cameroon and the BCEAO in Senegal (emails) and I haven't been answered yet. Anyway, if I don't receave a reply, you should delete only the new series, because the old ones have more than 25 years. I wait your answer, kind regards--Manu (talk) 09:33, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

Why did you deleted the file CBX_250_Twister.jpg ?

Hi, i've noticed you deleted the photo CBX_250_Twister.jpg. This is a photograph of a Brazilian made Motorcycle, and the photo has just taken for the Motorcycle Wikipedia's page: http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/CBX_250_Twister

Fausto2009 only uploaded copyright violations, ask him. --Martin H. (talk) 00:29, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

Delete?

Do you think that is funny? NOT ONE of the images I uploaded was OFFICIALY copyrighted. It cost me alot time to find them, and you delete them like they were crap. --Musashi nl (talk) 15:21, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

I just say it again, the content was FREE to use.
And I did not obtain the image from 'http://www.resource-media.com/arts/Karate/Kyokoshin/mas.jpg'

Whatever, this is useless anyway.. --Musashi nl (talk) 19:40, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

That sounds more clear than your last message have a good night --Musashi nl (talk) 21:32, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

Why the hell did you nominate this image? This file gots a valid source, an valid author and a valid author, it just needed some cleaning up! This lazy ass tagging of files which can be cleaned up easily seriously pisses me off. Do you want to scare users away from Commons? Do you want to piss of the local wiki's? These kind of deletions are very damaging to Commons. Multichill (talk) 15:55, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

Seems like we adressed the same problem the same time. I dont like your tone here. --Martin H. (talk) 15:56, 8 October 2009 (UTC)
Me and some other people spend a lot of time to get images and users to Commons. This is not an easy process because users are sceptical. The prime reason why people don't like Commons: Deletionist administrators. Actions like this one might seem regular or small to you, but are very bad for this process. I might have been somewhat direct in my post but that's only because you need to understand the impact. If you understand the impact you might in the future ask the original uploader for clarification instead of nominating it right away. Multichill (talk) 17:10, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

Shiitake image

Hi Martin. I recently uploaded a great Shiitake picture to the commons. You rotated the image by 90 degrees. Please do not do this, because I am using it on wikipedia as an introduction image! If you want the image rotated could you please create a separate copy of the image? Big thanks!

O ok. Thanks for the message. Sorry about the inappropriate photo uploading! Please don't ban me! I forgot I still need to learn the proper way to upload these images. It won't happen again! Jatlas2 (talk) 20:08, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

Hi, could you check if File:Toseproeskiskopje.jpg is an identical re-upload of File:Tose-proeski.jpg and/or File:Tose070600vezimezasebehsy6.jpg, which you both deleted as copyvios the other day? This user has been trying to insert these images at en:Tose Proeski for several weeks now, and they are probably all copyvios. Cheers, --Fut.Perf. 21:08, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

The others are different images and clearly copyvios, sourced even to "Internet" or containing watermark. Following the logic - one will not upload copyvios if he owns self-created images - this might be a copyvio too. However, it is missing a license and will soon be deleted if the problem is not fixed. --Martin H. (talk) 21:16, 8 October 2009 (UTC)
Okay, thanks for the info. I'll continue keeping an eye on this user over at en-wiki then. Fut.Perf. 21:23, 8 October 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. There are also 5 possibly free photos at http://macedonia.usembassy.gov/archive_2007.html, the 2007 archive, and two articles linked from there http://macedonia.usembassy.gov/prtoseproeski.html and http://macedonia.usembassy.gov/toseinmemoriam.html. All 5 are not very large and not very good. I personally not upload this kind of photos not credited to the US embasy, but they are not rejected from Commons under {{PD-USGov-DOS}}. --Martin H. Greetings Martin H. I need to know if a file is uploaded to commons but it's a company, but the images are not specified well as information and images are covers of books that can be done there--Elberth 00001939 (talk) 01:14, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

You added this question to the top of my talk - I never look at the top so I missed this. The answer is: Look at Commons:Deletion policy, use {{subst:npd}} in such cases. --Martin H. (talk) 22:35, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

The joke of "verification" of copyright

Long text for a simple requirement. See dave pages answer in Commons:Deletion requests/Image:FrancescoQuinn.jpg. --Martin H. (talk) 19:17, 2 October 2009 (UTC)

Right. Because an email address cannot be forged/altered. Or a web page. The self-styled editors like yourself would do the legwork that verifies an email address belongs to a specific user ... how? If you want to be that anal about copyright, the only true way to do it would be to demand a proper Copyright Registration number and take the steps to verify it with the Library of Congress. Then again, were you willing to do that level of verification, a query to a production company wouldn't have been out of the question in the first place.

(Oh, and the image that I must not own? It's in the actual film, which via link is free online to any viewer. At the website of the production company which apparently must not really have produced the piece. The audacity that they would post it. They must be tempting a lawsuit by the real copyright holder. Oh, wait. That's me. Guess I dropped the ball by not being schizophrenic enough to go after ... myself.)

You obviously missed the point of the "long text," since your response verifies on your level this is nothing about concern for copyright rights and everything about someone refusing to play the game about being in the "in group." Meanwhile, if Wikipedia thinks they have done due diligence when it comes to intellectual property through something as weak as "OTMS" procedure it will come back to bite them on the ass, no doubt someday soon.

Storgodar (talk) 06:26, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

Commons is an international project, so how should a LoC regristration help us? Also Commons is NOT for files that everyone can see freely on the web - thats like free beer - Commons is for free files that everyone can use for every purpose including modification or commercial use - thats freedom.
As a copyright holder of a work and a person probably working with media every day it is maybe your every day work to give people who want to reuse your work or parts thereof a permission to do so, in written. What problem you have with giving this permission to Wikimedia? The only difference is that your permission is not for one single purpose like "I want to write something about your movie", but that it is a blank permission for everyone to reuse the file whenever, wherever and for whatever they want under the terms of a free license allowing this (allowed restrictions are attribution and copyleft). --Martin H. As Tardes da Júlia.jpg, why not PD-textlogo? "This image, or text depicted in it, only consists of simple geometric shapes and text. File:建设中的津塔.JPG is not File:建设中的津塔.jpg. Yes, it was deleted precautionary. So far your record is very bad and if you continue to "upload some pictures which are not free" you will be blocked. Uploading non-free images is not one of your personal rights but a strong violation of the basic rules of this project. --Martin H. (talk) 09:04, 15 October 2009 (UTC)
It means you don't have evidence. Before "upload some pictures which are not free" there is a word "If".Most free photo are deleted with out check by you.I just hope you check the photos later and give out the evidence and reason. Because as fresh man upload in a foreign language webpage ,I may not notice some tips.

Help

I already ask for permission to the copyright holder of this image and she allowed me to use this image in Wikipedia. What I have to do next? --Hovik95 (talk) 20:02, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

See the information on your talkpage, please forward your written permission to OTRS. Please note, that a "in Wikipedia" permission is not enough, see COM:L#Acceptable licenses for the requirements a permission must meet and for some not applicable restrictions. --Martin H. (talk) 22:00, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

Lost, apparently

I noticed some changes that you made to the information with the image I uploaded today. Apparently I am even more lost than I realized. I had already asked a question here about image quality problems here. Could you, or someone, help with some guidance until I get a few things figured out? What I am trying to do is add some images from old books, that are now available as PDFs: and to add them to an image gallery I created with already existing Wikimedia Commons image files.

What I need to learn, it seems, is how to upload good quality images, and make sure the permission forms are done correctly. Malcolm Schosha (talk) 17:45, 14 October 2009 (UTC)

Nothing bad here. You only toke the wrong way in Commons:Upload and uploaded it as a screenshot. Ok, it is a screenshot, but that upload option is not intended for old works. Use "from somewhere else" and use the license/permission "Author died more than 70 years ago". This will result in {{PD-old}} as license template. Additional you may enlarge it to {{PD-scan|PD-old}} to indicate that the person or company who scanned the book not gain any copyright for this and that every copyrigth claim is invalid. Google indicates that the scans are only for non-commercial use, this is invalid if the original is public domain.
Regarding the quality I already said on COM:HD: I dont know what was wrong. I downloaded the pdf, clicked the image with the right mouse button, adobe, both programs the acrobat reader 8.1 and acrobat professional 7.0 I have, allows me to save the image that way in .jpg or .bmp format. I saved it as bmp and opend it with IrfanView to convert it to png. --Martin H. (talk) 17:59, 14 October 2009 (UTC)

My bot

Yes, with the bot I use {{subst:nld}} :) --Filnik\b[Rr]ock\b!? 12:46, 15 October 2009 (UTC)

Uhm, I see that you are an admin and a checkuser so I assume that you know better then me how Commons works :-) To tell the truth, I know only the minimum things in order not to make mistakes and to help the other users regarding the "normal" questions, nothing more but I have a more complex question that can turn useful to both of us ;-) The question is this: my bot can detect if a template is a license or if it's a "white template" (this is the name that I give to the templates like infobox that are useful but that aren't licenses). In this way, a file that has only the template "infobox" will be marked also if there's that template, because it's not a license. On it.wikipedia we have few templates that work like that, not more than 15, on commons seems that users create some new template every day.. in this way, some images won't be checked "for real" because they have unknown template that the bot will assume as licenses as default. Now, to prevent this problem, I've created a log page, this: User:Filbot/Report where are listed all the images that have an unknown template on them. But unfortunately, I've not the time to put in the right place all the new templates that are created every day (and I must say, they aren't only a few) so I don't check that page any more, but it can be useful to other admins that have a bit of time, to make the bot smarter. If you're interested and you know where to ask the help of other admins to help me, I can make a little how-to to explain where to put the white templates and so on.. can you help me? :-) Thanks, --Filnik\b[Rr]ock\b!? 13:03, 15 October 2009 (UTC)
I know of the log and sometimes look at it. Youre right, the number of white templates is growing, e.g. {{Date}}, {{Own}}, many soure templates, and so on. I think admins will maintain such a list and pay more attention to untagged files, but I think im not the right person. You should adress any proposal or improvement at COM:AN. --Martin H. User talk:Losangeleslive

Hello, I was looking at some images added by this user Losangeleslive (talk · contributions · Statistics) at Portuguese Wikipedia, and I suspect they are violating author rights. He has published some photos as if they are his own work, but these photos can be found on the internet, attributed to other authors. I would like to ask, if possible, a closer analysis of his added photos.

Some examples:

  1. original and his copy.
  2. Original and his copy (notice the watermark)

I believe (and hope) you have better tools to identify more possible copies. I'm worrid about this because he has added many of these photos to Portuguese Wikipedia, replacing old ones, and if they are illegal copies, they will be removed, and old ones may not be restored correctly (not automatically, at least). I have also asked it to him in Portuguese, through his talk page at pt.wiki. Regards, Ednei amaral (talk) 07:17, 16 October 2009 (UTC)

I already noticed his uploads. Thanks for asking him in portuguese, at best he will simply say: Yes, all this images are not my own work" and we can delete them. Otherwise I will search for some more of them, and, at some point I can be sure, delete all the image I suspect that they are not own work. --Martin H. (talk) 14:38, 16 October 2009 (UTC)

Georgie sydney

you have left me a message about permission to use an image Whiskers history at night -the cat's whisker page. I have an email from ken russell's agent that I can forward - if you tell me where to send it. other than that, being a newbie I'm not sure how to fill in all the requirements for images. I would also point out that the photographers' gallery used these images for their PR - so they are in the public doman, and yes, ps does know about the cat's whisker page. How can we proceed?195.137.53.74 09:49, 16 October 2009 (UTC)

First an image that is published somewhere, even for public relation purposes, is not public domain. Public domain means, that the copyright holder abandones his copyright or his copyright expires, copyright expires 70 years after the authors death. Second the information I gave you on your talkpage includes all necessary information about how to proceede, please forward a written permission from the copyright holder to OTRS or point directly to a website that is related to the image and announce that the image is free of rights and everyone can use it for every purpose including commercial use. --Martin H. Thanks, I know, but they were uploaded by numerous persons in various ways, so it's unlikely that there is a lot of consistency. I guess it will take a couple of days for the template based category to update. -- User:Docu at 15:34, 17 October 2009 (UTC)
Yes, it will. Its also no problem, the duplicate categorization does no harm. If there are any pictures in Category:Picswiss left, I dont think so, they should only have their category removed. Will check this if the servers did their job. --Martin H. (talk) 15:38, 17 October 2009 (UTC)
I dont know, I not invented this template. But I agree, thats exactly what I thought at the moment I found that there is a specific Information template for Picswis. My personal opinion here is: To have consistent and machine readable metadata for our images create specific information templates only if using them with "subst:" results in a regular information template. The same applies for {{Flickr}} and {{OpenStreetMap}} and maybe others btw. --Martin H. (talk) 19:53, 17 October 2009 (UTC)
Well I created this User:Diaa_abdelmoneim/Information_Picswiss-test tell me what you think...--Diaa abdelmoneim (talk) 20:19, 17 October 2009 (UTC)
I will have a deeper look tomorow. I prefer the information template on every file directly, I actually dont know if this is supported by other users especially users more involved in template maintenance. My idea is to
1) merge all extra information from Template:Information Picswiss to Template:Picswiss,
2) make sure that Template:Picswiss is used on all images and that it is used correctly regarding the license migration problem and
3) replace Template:Information Picswiss with Template:Information.
As said: Im not much involved in template maintenance and not involved in this template. I dont like to make-up such project. --Martin H. (talk) 20:39, 17 October 2009 (UTC)

This file WAS File:Michael Jackson and President Bush 2 (cropped).jpg. The uploader claimed that it was a photograph taken by a White House photographer, he failed to proof this claim. Seems like the photograph still makes it way through the internet under the wrong "White House" Public domain claim. --Martin H. (talk) 21:45, 17 October 2009 (UTC)

--Ikiwaner (talk) 16:57, 18 October 2009 (UTC)

hi. thanks for your response at licensing talk. Still trying to hunt down a picture of a jaculus (right now, we don't have any, only a painting, not very educational).

A question about copyright for a VIC

Hello Martin H., Eusebius directed me towards you to take your advice. I have a doubt about a possible copyright violation (not really intentional) for an image nominated as a Valued Image candidate. Here is the review and the questions about copyright. I would appreciate your eye and opinion. Thanks a lot in advance, --Myrabella (talk) 11:59, 21 October 2009 (UTC)

Thats rather difficult and im not an expert but as most editors here a layperson - so thanks for the compliment. My argumention for a weak "keep" is that it is inspired by other images but not copied. Most of the layout, including the exact proportional differences of details beetween the different stages, is even predetermined by academic facts (or theories) and thus are not eligible for copyright. --Martin H. jpeg Bilder löschen

Hi Martin!

Danke! Amada44 (talk) 12:33, 21 October 2009 (UTC)

Commons:Superseded images policy - nein.

Gracias. --Pumk (talk) 15:03, 21 October 2009 (UTC)

Commonshelper trick

Try changing {{Bild-CC-by-sa/2.0/de}} to {{Self|Cc-by-sa-2.0-de}} at the file before you transfer it to Commons. If you plan on transferring a lot of files you might want to use your own bot (much faster). Multichill (talk) 09:05, 23 October 2009 (UTC)

Hi Multichill, this files are all from one user, I already set up AWB to clean them up for Category:Photographs by Steindy. Im dont have any technical skills to use own bots or scripts or whatever, Im very happy with Commons helper at the moment. --Martin H. (talk) 09:31, 23 October 2009 (UTC)
If you can handle awb you can certainly handle imagecopy.py (part of pywikipedia) . It's a simple (but fast) wrapper around commonshelper. Multichill (talk) 10:20, 23 October 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the tip, some reading there but if I understand it I will give it a try. Maybe there are more Users around on Wikipedia who decide to contribute to Commons in future to make their images available for all projects, so Steindy decided with his realy great soccer images and User:Jacktd who followed this example. --Martin H. (talk) 10:36, 23 October 2009 (UTC)
We moved most of the images from nlwp to Commons using imagecopy.py. About 1800 files left. Most nlwp users moved to Commons for uploading now. I keep some stats here. Multichill (talk) 11:11, 23 October 2009 (UTC)

RE: RV

Hi Martin. In regards to: [3]. That isn't true. Blocked users who are socking aren't welcome here, even if they contribute positively. They can't just contribute if their main account is indefinitely blocked. They need to get unblocked first, then we can accept their contributions. Not the other way around. Kanonkas // talk // e-mail // 09:22, 23 October 2009 (UTC)

I wouldnt call this sockpupetry, the user is not acting under false pretences or hiding his identity. His intention is good, his contributions are of good quality, so why tracking him and removing his attempts to contribute in a good manner. I know the case, also in other wikis, seems like many people have an issue with his rude sarcasm, he reacts short tempered or somewhat stupid if he feels forced onto the defensive. Thats the reason why he was banned from the comunity, banning without any chance of rehabilitation? I disagree. Let him show his good intentions, there is no other way to proof good intentions in an anonymous community. --Martin H. (talk) 09:53, 23 October 2009 (UTC)
It pretty much is IP sockpuppetry/block evading. The user has not been allowed by the community to contribute via their main account, nor contribute in any other ways. Yet the user in question evades the block by editing as an IP. That's a block evasion and a violation of his indefinite block. Simply said: he isn't welcome to contribute. There are other ways to request to be unblocked. However, trying to "show" one is good and the like in this way isn't helping his cause. He can request to be unblocked, but this isn't the way to "prove" himself to be unblocked. I don't see why we should give this user a leap way. He needs to get community consensus to be able to contribute any further here. He can't just edit the way he is doing it now, even if the edits are constructive. Kanonkas // talk // e-mail // 10:18, 23 October 2009 (UTC)
Well, I disagree with your opinion here and I will not do anything in future to prevent him from participation and contributing in a decent and honest way. Of course as long as he not disrupts the project. However, I will not again undo your attempts to exclude him if you think this is mandatory. --Martin H. (talk) 10:30, 23 October 2009 (UTC)

Barbara Rosenthal at Lamagna Gallery with Homo Futurus image

Barbara Rosenthal will give her permission for me to use the photo I took of her. She wants to know, and so do I, how you would like her to send you the permission. Please give specific directions.

And -- about my other image of her in her 6th Ave studio: I don't understand the "template" problem. Could you please just give me instructions about what to do -- do -- step by step. Everyone a Wikipedia in the editorial department tells about the problems, but not how to solve them. And -- I found a photo of the house she grew up in in Franklin Square, New York, that I would like to upload to Wikicommons, but it is not a FEDERAL photo, it is a COUNTY photo. deletion tags

Hey Martin. You have recently added deletion tags to several of pictures that I have uploaded. The reason why I added Afghanistan tags to those pictures was because the sites are all owned by Afghans. Except 1 or 2 cases, all the site administrators are located in Afghanistan even though the domain is registered to a foreign address. The reason why I am saying this is because I am an Afghan web administrator as well but located in Canada. I have bought domains on my name for several Afghan organizations but hey are administered from Afghanistan and they hold a copy right to the content.

Still, I am trying to get in touch with admins of the sites and will get a written permission from them. I just got a permission for File:Mohammad_Daud_Miraki.jpg from Miraki himself. I have his permission in my e-mail as a reply. So how do I post that permission? Do I forward the e-mails to an admin or what?

Thank you (Ketabtoon (talk) 04:47, 25 October 2009 (UTC))

Please forward the written permission to COM:OTRS. The image must be first published in Afghanistan to qualify for PD-Afghanistan and they must also be pd in the US according to US copyright laws. --Martin H. (talk) 04:49, 25 October 2009 (UTC)

Uploaded pictures

Hi Martin, I would like to ask you about some pictures what I uploaded. You markead these pictures

because the copyright status is unclear. I really understand why? All these pictures are more then 70 years old historic events or peoples. So if you give me some advice what was wrong or what kind of more licence do you need to mark them, that would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Andrew69. (talk) 08:27, 25 October 2009 (UTC)

Careful, I marked them in a different situation, you maybe already fixed some problems. Aditional an image is not public domain because it is 70 years old, it is public domain if
1) the author died 70 years ago - so assuming a lifespan of 80 years and an age of 30 years the image must be 70+50 years old to assume public domain - photos from the 1920s are not safe enough public domain.
2) the author never disclosed his identity. This not means the author is not known or the documentation is too bad, it means he never disclosed his identity to anyone.

Hello, can you please check images uploaded by this user, starting from this one. He claims "this work is mine (his)", but he also says it was taken from a 7th grade didactic book. He has already had this file deleted once. If you can check other files by him too, I suspect there are more copyright violations... Thanks, Ednei amaral (talk) 16:38, 25 October 2009 (UTC)

I cant say anything to File:Freetown - Serra Leoa - África.jpg, but it is very similar to File:Crianças passando fome - Berdale - Somália - África.jpg. Luda Sokolova media files

Dear Martin,

could you please explain in simple words, what else should I do in order to prevent you from deleting my media files?

I'm officialy employed by the Russian Singer Luda Sokolova, so I have the right to distrubuite her photoes, videos and music files. Besides, she herself wrote an e-mail of the requested template to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org:

"I hereby assert that I am the creator and/or sole owner of the exclusive copyright of WORK http://www.ludasokolova.com. I agree to publish that work under the free license CC-BY, CC-BY-SA I acknowledge that I grant anyone the right to use the work in a commercial product, and to modify it according to their needs, as long as they abide by the terms of the license and any other applicable laws.

I am aware that I always retain copyright of my work, and retain the right to be attributed in accordance with the license chosen. Modifications others make to the work will not be attributed to me. I am aware that the free license only concerns copyright, and I reserve the option to take action against anyone who uses this work in a libelous way, or in violation of personality rights, trademark restrictions, etc. I acknowledge that I cannot withdraw this agreement, and that the work may or may not be kept permanently on a Wikimedia project.

thanks for the answer.

See COM:QFI and Commons:Deletion requests/File:Whitney Houston in Hamburg.jpg, thats not the first time. Images from this flickr account are not free, the flickr uploader is not the author. Please critically evaluate the Flickr licenses. --Martin H. (talk) 16:01, 26 October 2009 (UTC)

The permission is allowable for the 2009 Oscar images. That is a separate author and she has given permission for those images (she gave permission for the entire set). You can undelete those images (I can't see their names but one of them was File:Miley Cyrus at the 2009 Academy Awards 04.jpg). The ones by Angela George, however, should remain deleted. --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 05:41, 27 October 2009 (UTC)

I want to upload some good images of Ethiopian crosses, with knot patterns, for Knots in traditional art‎; but am having a hard time finding images from sources that are obviously ok. Malcolm Schosha (talk) 17:17, 27 October 2009 (UTC)

No. Thats a recent photograph of a 3D object, the photographic work is under copyright. --Martin H. (talk) 17:21, 27 October 2009 (UTC)
1, 2 & 3 are freely licensed images from Flickr. Use Flinfo to generate the meta information easily, the image ID is the last part of the Flickr URL. You may read Commons:Flickr befor using Flickr. There are many images on Flickr licensed as free for commercial reuse and modification - use the advanced search and check this license requirements in search options (last buttons). Upload images with Flinfo, enter the ID, get the information (Flickr-Info anfordern), klick on "Upload-Formular öffnen" - its very easy. --Martin H. (talk) 17:30, 27 October 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick reply. Does the same apply for Picasa as for Flickr? Malcolm Schosha (talk) 17:35, 27 October 2009 (UTC)
Yes, there is the same option to license images under Creative Commons Attribution or Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike. The only difference is, that we not have uploadtools for Picasa, so you have to fill out the upload form by hand. Both, Picasa and Flickr, is searchable via Google advanced imagesearch. Pay attention to wrongly licensed images, means people uploading images to Flickr, Picasa - or Wikimedia Commons :( - that they dont have the copyright. --Martin H. (talk) 17:48, 27 October 2009 (UTC)
Again, thanks for the explanation, and for the very helpful information which I will soon apply (after I finish some work that is getting close to a deadline). Malcolm Schosha (talk) 11:21, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for your help. You said you deleted a duplicate, but I couldn't find any in wikicommons today, so I'm goint to put one in again now. I hope that's ok. The article has already the box for it, so I'm hoping it will just automatically show up there now.Billcreston (talk) 18:08, 27 October 2009 (UTC)

Anna Baltzer photos

Hi Martin,

Last night I uploaded a photo called 10.26.09 Anna Baltzer Lecture 76_Cropped.jpg (or something like that), and you flagged it, which I totally understand. I contacted the photographer (who owns all rights to it), and he was happy to email in the permission, but he wanted the name of the file changed to AnnaBaltzer_lecture.jpg So I reuploaded the same file but with the new name. Sorry for the duplicate -- you can go ahead and delete the first one if you want. You should receive the commons consent via email from the photographer (C. Bay Milin) very shortly.

Thanks much!

-BR

No problem, I deleted the now duplicate first upload and made a note on the second image that an email with permission information was sent. --Martin H. (talk) 16:51, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

Hallo Martin. Du hast dich an der Diskussion beteiligt. Dieselbe Bitte geht auch an dich. Danke im Voraus. --Leyo 20:30, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

Welche anderen Gadgets hast Du eingeschaltet? Mit welcher Interface-Sprache arbeitest Du? Und was genau hast Du gemacht? Mausrad? Lupo 08:25, 29 October 2009 (UTC)

  • So viele Fragen ;) Verwende MonoBook, 800x600px/180px Bildgröße, Sprache Englisch, Gadgets (mal durchnummeriert): #1.6 + tab, #2.2 * tab, #2.3 category on Google maps, #2.6 Logs filter, #2.7 Contributions Range, #2.10 Not geocoded images in category, #2.11 Disable the image annotations (z.zt.), #3.3 add Information, #3.5 QuickDelete, #3.6 User Messages, #4.2 HotCat, #4.3 Category above content, #6.2 DelReqHandler.
Lupo 10:21, 29 October 2009 (UTC)
Sehr komisch. --Martin H. (talk) 13:05, 29 October 2009 (UTC)
Siehe COM:VP#Add a Note makes Internet Explorer sluggish?.
Siehe COM:VP#Add a Note makes Internet Explorer sluggish? Könntest Du's nochmals ausprobieren (Browser-Cache neu laden nicht vergessen)? Lupo 10:00, 30 October 2009 (UTC)

Hi Lupo, Ja, das Problem ist behoben. Vielen Dank für deine Arbeit! --Martin H. (talk) 16:01, 30 October 2009 (UTC)

Lupo 16:37, 30 October 2009 (UTC)

Finding The Photographer Before Photo Re-Print

Hi Martin, What if a wiki-commons-photographer has no listed email, nothing on their "Talk Page," and their Photo is of a National Landmark, never used (per Wiki data) BUT his wiki-lic. requires a by line, I can't reach him so do I just put his one word name under it? User:Bill has a lot of media here but this is an old photo that he donated to the Arch/Natural Bridge Project.... It is one of the best Photographs of The Natural Bridge in Virginia, USA. thanks, if you get this (I'm having problems reaching anybody at Wikipedia) iam2cricket (is my wiki-tag name is toni) -iam2cricket

Hi Toni, can you refer to a filename? Im not understand the problem completly, do you want to use an image in Wikipedia or do you want to use it outside Wikipedia? --Martin H. (talk) 16:45, 29 October 2009 (UTC)

Could you please take a look at the tagging of this file with deletion template? FOP is being cited here as teh reason, however FOP states Such laws, generally, allow photography of publicly visible buildings and non-private scenes from public places for the purposes of publishing. The concert being a non-private scene, I'm perfectly sure that its photography is legible. When backdrops are used in concert tours, obviously the owners release it for public domain otherwise they wouldn't have reproduced it. I'm confused and have asked the nominater also to explain this. That way there are 100000000000s files in Commons which needs to be deleted ASAP. Legolas2186 (talk) 10:01, 30 October 2009 (UTC)

FOP applies for derivative works of works erected permanently in the public, different from country to country this may be architectural work or buildings, sculptures or even 2D artwork. Here we have the background not located at a public place and not permanently. The only question is, if this is a work and if it is not de minimis. So no, this is not a non-private scene and no, showing something to the public not makes it public domain. So I personally think this is a derivative work of the background. --Martin H. Escutcheons of National University of Córdoba (Argentina)

Hi Martin, are File:Escudo UNC.png and File:Logo-UNC.jpg copyvios?. Escutcheon of National University of Córdoba was created around 1664. Now there are a vectorized version File:Escudo UNC vectorizado.svg. Thanks. Alakasam (talk) 20:48, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

If the emblem is so old the "design" is of course public domain, I wish I knew. The vector version File:Escudo UNC vectorizado.svg seems ok, public domain original and the creative work of creating the vector version under a free license. --Martin H. (talk) 21:06, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

I asked you because I uploaded File:Escudo UNC.png in september 2008, but I don't created it. Thanks. Alakasam (talk) 21:18, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

hi thanks for the reply to my Schinkels Morning question. Youre right I was looking for a higher resolution version to download. But thank you for getting back to me.

Best Wishes :o)
