Pay attention to copyright
File:Mum 1965.gif has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

  • This file is a copyright violation for the following reason: Tineye has found ,multiple hits om this picture prior to the upload date here. This looks to be the work the others were cropped from. The filename suggests that it may be a family photo. If so there may be heredity the licence. This information needs to be sent to COM:VRT whether the file has yet been deleted or not. If deleted it can be un-deleted.
Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

This particular photograph is already in Reference 1 "Unravelling the Code" p 670 under a Creative Commons licence.
© = Licensed for re-use under Creative Commons Share-alike licence, Attribution required.
It is also on https://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-02-23/inaugural-dorothy-hewett-award-to-josephine-wilson/7192598, listed as 'Supplied'
at https://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/books/dream-mother-poem-by-rozanna-lilley-20150616-gho7sa.html
and elsewhere
In other words it is already very much out in the wild and there it is no reason it should be 'deleted'. What do you want to do? Marillajoe (talk) 06:50, 21 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Marillajoe Use COM:VRT to present your evidence, please. Doing so here has no effect. Once you have presented your evi8dence the team will determine whether it is sufficient. Again, conversations here have no effect. Timtrent (talk) 08:28, 21 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Request to COM:VRT re three photographs has been sent as per your instructions. Fourth (already deleted) will have to be replaced, as source is unknown. Marillajoe (talk) 22:20, 21 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
File:Dorothy and Les Lambton.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Image deletion[edit]

  • Hello! These look like photos taken by a family member, you can change the license to "Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs" and fill out a VRT form declaring that you are the legal heir to the copyright using this form: --RAN (talk) 17:13, 20 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Please forward to: permissions-commons@wikimedia.org

I hereby affirm that I am the creator or the copyright holder of the images as shown below:

I am aware that this agreement is not limited to Wikipedia or related sites. I am aware that the copyright holder always retains ownership of the copyright as well as the right to be attributed in accordance with the license chosen. • Don't forget to add copies of the family photos to Familysearch and Findagrave, the links are at Wikidata. You have to register for Familysearch, but it is free. --RAN (talk) 23:26, 25 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

One editor, one account[edit]

Your statement here shows that this account is shared between one Marilla and one Joe declares that this account is being used by two people. This is against the rules on all Wikimedia Foundation sites. You need, at once, to desist from account sharing. Continuing to share accounts will result in the loss of editing privileges, and thus defeat your objective of creating your mother's biography here. This was likely to be an innocent error, nonetheless you are required to take action to cease sharing one account.

The simplest action is to abandon this account and create two new ones, one for Marilla and the other for Joe. However, once that is done, do not be tempted to use this abandoned account. This is termed sockpupptery and will result in a block Timtrent (talk) 08:42, 21 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • The actual rules about sharing an account at Commons are here: Commons:Role account, and they aren't even rules, it is someone's personal essay. We have shared accounts for institutions like museums and archives and we encourage institutional accounts since their entries can all be under a single institutional license and handled by a single VTRS notice. Since you are releasing the images as an archive, a shared account is proper. For Wikipedia the rules are different: See: w:Wikipedia:Username_policy#Sharing_accounts. Sockpupptery is the fraudulent use of multiple accounts to evade disciplinary action. --RAN (talk) 23:28, 25 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much Richard for clearing this up. We are new to Wiki and have a lot to learn.
We do have a largish library of useful images (thousands) at Deluge Publishing, many of which are taken by the editors and associates on four continents from 1960 to the present, while others are old family photos taken by deceased relatives. Many are already on flickr. We are quite happy for these to pass into the public domain.
While the Deluge Publishing account (Marillajoe) is barred from editing, we see it is still usable on Commons.
How do we go about having this archive approved on Commons? Marillajoe (talk) 06:04, 26 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Restoring your deleted file[edit]

You can ask for your file to be restored now that you submitted your VTRS. Commons:Deletion review. --RAN (talk) 23:42, 25 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Richard
We have now discovered you can avoid this whole messy delete-restore process by uploading a picture file through the Commons Upload Wizard rather than trying to load it straight into a Wikipedia entry. Then by following the prompts it is immediately cleared for use.
In order to speed things up and simplify, is it worth just reloading these three files, possibly with a different filename, through Commons? 2001:8003:2833:9301:21F6:5A8A:32B5:1A38 07:07, 26 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Dorothy Hewett and Clancy.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you.

You know of the need to use a heredity Licence if valid, and/or to send permissions to COM:VRT 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 21:02, 7 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Here we go again, We have a picture taken in Australia by Australians that is totally out of copyright in Australia (as it is pre 1955) but is not accepted as 'out of copyright' in America - and will not be so until I am long dead and the images are lost. For some reason on an international site we are supposed to regard Americans as 'culturally superior'.
We have been waiting almost a month for replies from permissions-Commons to the last batch of images. They are supposed to have a two-day turnover. How long are we supposed to wait? A year? 25 years until they go out of American copyright?
@timtrent, you seem absolutely determined to block any attempt to facilitate good quality, modern looking Wikipedia entries and want them to be tired, uninteresting and image-free. I am submitting a formal complaint against you to wikipedia. JF Marillajoe (talk) 22:51, 7 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@timtrent, you are deliberately blocking my own work with no justification at all and out of nothing but nastiness. Whats more you seem to have tagged it for rapid deletion. I am submitting a formal complaint against you to wikipedia
JF Marillajoe (talk) 22:57, 7 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You must do as you see fit with any putative complaint. Wikimedia Commons is not Wikipedia. They are separate places with very clear distinction between them.
Wikimedia Commons has very precise rules about licencing, and you must follow them to the letter. You have been told what to do one this page in the section Image deletion, but seem to have chosen to ignore that advice. It is in your best interests to follow the advice you have been given.
Doing the same thing you have always done and expecting different results, and then expressing distaste and bewilderment is not particularly useful as a strategy here. Please remember that you are the person who wishes your mothers pictures to be online, so you are the person who must get the licencing correct.
I imagine there is no need to reply to both sections here? 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 06:53, 8 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Marillajoe: Happy Easter . Wondering if Wickepin stands for Wickepin, Western Australia. The description of the file on the article reads Hewett and sister Lesley, Lambton Downs about 1928. Is it okay to add Wickepin? Thank you for your time. Lotje (talk) 08:42, 17 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, I even considered putting Wickepin myself. The farm is actually near Malyalling siding on the way to Yealering, but Wickepin is the closest small town. Happy Easter! Marillajoe (talk) 11:36, 17 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
