Thanks for uploading File:Grossbrand bei F. W. Quist 1983 - Ausschnitt Stuttgarter Zeitung.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Carnaval[edit]

Marc-Lautenbacher (talk) 21:23, 2 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Merci. :) -- Asclepias (talk) 22:41, 2 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Photo Challenge – Second Place
Congratulations!

Your picture Canadian First Nations girl, costume with integrated Hello Kitty earrings.jpg won the 2nd place in the Photo Challenge Multiculturalism, in January 2022. You can find the results of the challenge here.

-- Jarekt (talk) 03:22, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations! I wonder though about the description, which says the dress is traditional. To me both the fabrics and the abstract patterns look Asian. Are you sure this is a traditional dress? I don't know traditional dresses of Canadian First Nations, so I might be mistaken, and there is nothing wrong in First Nation people wearing multicultural dresses, but I think it is important that the description is correct, especially as the photo is getting quite some eyes on it and it is about First Nations culture. –LPfi (talk) 17:59, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your question, if the description is correct. I like to let you know, that I've assisted nearly every year at the great PowWow in the First Nations reservation of Wendake, because I am living in Quebec City, just 30 minutes drive away from this reservation. Because of my intense interest in First Nations culture, I have made several photo reportages of those PowWows in 2009, in 2014, 2016 and 2019.
What I have found out during those years is the fact, that Indian people use less and less traditional materials from former centuries as leather, deer tail hears, pearls made out of Porcupine quills or other materials, found in nature.
First Nations people of nowadays, they have adapted themselves with contemporary materials, modern fabrics as well as contemporary design - without denying their Indian roots. Those roots you can see on my photo with Indian ornamental perls-hat with feather on the girls head, her headband made out of glass-pearls, her delicate make-up beside the eyes, the small round earring-clips and the leather strap with coloured glass pearls, falling down her costume. Even the hair-dress with centre parting and the two braids is a very typical Indian style.
What you mean with abstract patterns is the ready-printed pale blue top of her costume, which was maybe chosen of its similar style of the traditional Indian ornamental world. Finally the incontestable proof that the photo was taken on a traditional Pow Wow is the orange bracelet with its inscription!
What I find it's important, that we have just to consider the fact, that First Nation People are living in the 21st century! We just have to stop thinking, that Indians still have to wear clothes like in Hollywood made films!
By the way, because of those kinds of critically interrogations, I love to be with WIKIMEDIA and WIKIPEDIA too. It proves that the WIKIPEDIA community is always on her guard to offer the correct information to the users of WIKIMEDIA and WIKIPEDIA. That’s simply great!
-- Marc-Lautenbacher (talk) 19:30, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, for your last statement and for your detailed explanation. It is nice to get some insight in the contemporary life of First Nations – which I never hear about over here.
An acquaintance of mine wrote a book about the similar development among the Sámi: now living a modern life while trying to keep true to their roots. There is a Sámi native area, which is bilingual with their languages (at least on paper), but the Finnish municipalities with the highest number of Sámi are southern cities – and there they aren't entitled to Sámi childcare – and if you see somebody dressed in something resembling traditional Sámi clothing, it is likely to be a Finn in the tourist trade. The Sámi might use traditional boots in the fells, and in the city they might wear some piece of traditional jewellery or a scarf in Sámi colours, but the dress is reserved for special occasions.
For the image description, to me a "traditional dress" is different from a "dress true to the traditions", which is my impression of the dress. I'm not a native speaker of English, and this is not my field of study, so I might be wrong in making the distinction. Regardless, I find the photo very nice, and this combination of tradition and outside influence is encouraging and thrilling, especially when reading your description above. It'd be nice to have something of what you wrote here included.
LPfi (talk) 21:11, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hallo LPi, thanks a lot for your reply. To show you, that I take your comment seriously, I have changed the description of the photo and I've added some explanations on the photo description as well. ~~~~ Marc-Lautenbacher (talk) 21:06, 12 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
