Running cleanup bot over search results

Hi Magog. I would love to have the possibility to run your cleanup bot over files found in custom searches. Example 1, 2, 3. What do you think? --Leyo 00:57, 18 March 2015 (UTC)

@Leyo: was this a feature you wanted added to the bot, or something you just want done on a one-time basis? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 05:48, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
Well, I would love to have this as a permanent feature (as VFC does not have it). However, I don't know how tricky (and risky?) it would be to implement. --Leyo 16:52, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
@Leyo: "tricky." Actually I should be able to do that without killing myself. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:10, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
;-) “Risky” was thought to refer to the potential mass use of such an extended feature. --Leyo 23:24, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
Do you think someone might shove beans up their nose? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 23:39, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
@Leyo: this is mostly functional; it seems to be omitting some search results, but otherwise working is working now. It will limit the bot to 1000 results by request. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:05, 19 March 2015 (UTC)
Hey, that's great work! Thanks. The only this is that the edit summaries seem to be mixed up occasionally. --Leyo 01:21, 19 March 2015 (UTC)

┌─────────────────────────────────┘
@Leyo: they're not, but they're hard to read (clean up of file in search insource:/La bildo estas kopiita de wikipedia/ insource:/La originala priskribo estas/ as requested by User:Magog the Ogre). I think I will just use a generic edit summary. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:28, 19 March 2015 (UTC)

The search responsible for that cleanup was not the one mentioned, but insource:/Kategorie\:Datei\:Chemie/. --Leyo 10:33, 19 March 2015 (UTC)
  • Thanks for this feature! This made it possible to get rid of those silly double information templates. When Commons Helper moves files from some East Asian projects, Commons Helper doesn't properly interpret the local information template but inserts the whole template as the Chinese or Japanese "description" in another information template. --Stefan4 (talk) 11:05, 19 March 2015 (UTC)

These pages are not updated for couple of days. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:24, 26 March 2015 (UTC)

It is also the case for Commons:WikiProject Aviation/recent uploads. Gyrostat (talk) 20:02, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
@EugeneZelenko, Gyrostat: thanks for the heads up. I've made a correction and the bot should be making the changes within a few hours. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:12, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
Working again, thanks, usefull tools! Gyrostat (talk) 21:59, 27 March 2015 (UTC)

Request for restoring of files

Hello,
I send you this message to know if you can restore these files. They were deleted in 2013 because they were consider as Violations Copyrights, but i've remake a demand to the original photographer and ask him for an OTRS authorization (i'd forgot the OTRS procedure the last time). This is the files which are the subjects of this message :
* File:MV "Lopi" at Aliaga.jpg
* File:MV "Beau" at Aliaga.jpg
* File:MV "Antic" at Aliaga.jpg
* File:MV "Biladi" and MV "Beau" at Aliaga.jpg

If isn't possible, could you please said me which procedure i've to make to be authorize to reupload them?
Thank you in advance. Good evening. --Lev. Anthony (talk) 23:35, 28 March 2015 (UTC)

Rexexp search against Wiki API

Hi Magog the Ogre, from your cleanup_multi.php - how to run a query containig regexp against the Wiki API? Could you please paste an example for it? I currently only get empty results although the i use the same expression as via Wiki UI. Thanks, --Arnd (talk) 08:30, 29 March 2015 (UTC)

@Aschroet: Please provide me with the regular expression you're having trouble with. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 15:53, 29 March 2015 (UTC)
I am trying this which should return the same results as this. --Arnd (talk) 18:22, 29 March 2015 (UTC)
@Aschroet: uh, I don't even know. Try asking at w:WP:VPT. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 18:31, 29 March 2015 (UTC)
But how do you run the query and extract the files in cleanup_multi.php? --Arnd (talk) 18:33, 29 March 2015 (UTC)
Through the API. I don't know why the API is returning different results for you. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 18:35, 29 March 2015 (UTC)
Can you please extract the source code line generating the API URL? --Arnd (talk) 18:40, 29 March 2015 (UTC)
@Aschroet: this is the query it runs in the above scenario, as with POST (not GET) parameters (although it shouldn't matter): [1]. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 21:25, 29 March 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, works. Seems that the namespace parameter is mandatory. Furthermore, seems to be a bug since it only happens when srsearch param.contains regexp. --Arnd (talk) 12:52, 30 March 2015 (UTC)

Hello!

Thank you for uploading File:KinneretLevels-Apr21.jpg to the Wikimedia Commons. I noticed that when you uploaded from another Wikimedia project, you left out some important information, or copied it incorrectly. In the future, please consider using CommonsHelper, a tool which automates the process of moving files over. Thank you,

Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:45, 3 April 2015 (UTC)

Thanks.--i.е. v-mail 03:48, 3 April 2015 (UTC)
Magog, did you intentionally skip adding an original upload log here? --Stefan4 (talk) 16:52, 3 April 2015 (UTC)
No, thanks. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 16:53, 3 April 2015 (UTC)

Help with File Rename Issue?

Magog, Thanks for your assistance with renaming the original image file I recently uploaded.

I tried to upload a different version of the same image today, because a bot (I think it's a bot) did not like the border around the original image.

I therefore uploaded this version of the same image, albeit without a border.

Can you delete the original image, now that it's not longer needed?

This is the image to be deleted:

Shane_K._Bernard.jpg

Sincerely,

--Skb8721 (talk) 20:07, 3 April 2015 (UTC)

@Skb8721: I have done this. In the future, when you upload a better version of the same file, you can simply enter the original filename on the upload form. It will ask you if you're sure you want to overwrite; select yes. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 20:26, 3 April 2015 (UTC)

Justin Forsett at Cal

Regarding this edit at File:Justin Forsett at Cal.jpg, the copyright holder had asked that his real name NOT be used with his uploads. (I have forwarded an email I received from him that you can now view as a part of the ticket at 2007083110001056 where he asked to have his real name purged.) Can you please do a history purge of his real name at File:Justin Forsett at Cal.jpg and anywhere else you may have added it to honor his request? Thank you, --UserB (talk) 05:05, 4 April 2015 (UTC)

@UserB: I have done this. If we need to remove more information, let me know. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 19:56, 4 April 2015 (UTC)
Thanks. --UserB (talk) 01:21, 5 April 2015 (UTC)

WTS wikivoyage

Hi.

I was thinking that perhaps it was time to finish the cleanup on wikivoyage and I asked Stefan if he had any ideas.

Can you make https://toolserver.org/~magog/commons_images-wts.wikivoyage.htm work again without too much work?

Do you have any other ideas? --MGA73 (talk) 14:45, 5 April 2015 (UTC)

This week will be pretty hectic through Wednesday. I will take a look on Thursday. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 15:06, 5 April 2015 (UTC)
Thank you. WTS is pretty slow so perhaps it will be a nightmare to work on it. --MGA73 (talk) 15:09, 5 April 2015 (UTC)
@Stefan4, MGA73: Ask, and ye shall receive. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 05:53, 10 April 2015 (UTC)
Thank you very much. --MGA73 (talk) 11:42, 10 April 2015 (UTC)
I've tried it at it works really fast compered to doing it manually. --MGA73 (talk) 17:39, 10 April 2015 (UTC)
@MGA73: I can create a category delete-all tool in JavaScript, presumably be to used in conjunction with the NowCommons template. But it would be a pain in the butt, so I'm only going to do it if you indicate it will save you a significant amount of time. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 19:05, 10 April 2015 (UTC)
Thank you but I can just use my bot to mass delete if I want. But I think it is best to check and fix one by one. Otherwise we will never have the files fixed on Commons. The first transfers were pretty crappy you know :-(
You are welcome to check a few files to see if you find anything we could have a bot fix on Commons. I ran a few cleanups a week ago so I hope I got most of the general errors. --MGA73 (talk) 21:05, 10 April 2015 (UTC)
If I remember correctly, wts.wikivoyage-old.org is configured so that various Javascript stuff doesn't work. I think I tried creating a userscript on one of the wikivoyage-old wikis but that it didn't work. Therefore, your Javascript tool might not work. --Stefan4 (talk) 21:52, 11 April 2015 (UTC)

fileinfo.php

Hi Magog.

When I use fileinfo.php to fix a crappy transfer it makes text like this (in author and license):

  • [[:en:User:Jameslamb|Jameslamb]] at [http://en.wikipedia.org/ en.wikipedia]

When I use do_cleanup.php it changes the text to:

  • {{user at project|Jameslamb|wikipedia|en}}

Perhaps you could one day fileinfo.php so the two tools use the same text? --MGA73 (talk) 09:06, 11 April 2015 (UTC)

@MGA73: Yeah, eventually. Unfortunately, the code is in awful shape, due to my complete inexperience and lack of tools (gedit!) when I first wrote it. If you want to try to tackle the issue, I believe you have write rights. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:48, 12 April 2015 (UTC)
Who Me???? I my skills are awfull!!! Remember the wts transfers ;-) Well it is not a big deal. Just something for the "could be nice-list". --MGA73 (talk) 08:02, 12 April 2015 (UTC)

... for this, but I think the net effect is the same. Whaledad (talk) 17:43, 11 April 2015 (UTC)

Mistake Ogrebot 2

Hello Magog the Ogre, this edit has open an annoying conflict[2] as the bot has given the uploader (mover) the authorship and copyright. GreetingsUser: Perhelion (Commons: = crap?)  22:11, 11 April 2015 (UTC)

That is a very special case that was solved. I don't think anything needs to be done by Magog. --Leyo 22:16, 11 April 2015 (UTC)
Hm* I think that can happen more often (I saw this before). The rights owner was rightly quite outraged. But if you say this is an very special case...User: Perhelion (Commons: = crap?)  22:24, 11 April 2015 (UTC)
@Perhelion: actually, the bot just made the text appear as the original file page did at German Wikipedia. It neither added nor subtracted from the author field in that sense. As such, if the uploader wanted a specific attribution, then s/he didn't add it correctly in the first place. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:44, 12 April 2015 (UTC)
Thats the point, but I don't fully agree, this is handled in Commons similarly as we can see here in one of the most used templates on Commons Template: Own#See also. It would be better the work of Magnus Manske‎‎, not you afterwards. But if this really is a very very special case, I accept to do noting here. GreetingsUser: Perhelion (Commons: = crap?)  07:44, 12 April 2015 (UTC)

Thank you. Jaqeli 21:58, 14 April 2015 (UTC)

AN question

Hi Magog ... Does the archival of Look2See1's AN report mean that there's going to be no action taken? This seems to keep happening when the community tries to do something about this user's over-categorization habit. I think s/he's been blocked once for the behavior, but it has continued and each time someone raises it in AN, people comment on it and then the discussion gets archived with no real action taken. I'm not well-versed in how things like this work out here. Just wondering. --Sanfranman59 (talk) 18:37, 14 April 2015 (UTC)

@Sanfranman59: nope. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 21:49, 14 April 2015 (UTC)
Magog; I didn't get to comment on the recent discussion, but I support your block of Look2See1.[3] Thank you. Walter Siegmund (talk) 00:13, 15 April 2015 (UTC)

Tony Martin

Hey, Magog. Would you be so kind as to move Category:Tony Martin to Category:Tony Martin (cyclist) and then delete the Tony Martin? - --Bossanoven (talk) 20:53, 15 April 2015 (UTC)

Thanks. But does it make sense to have a category redirect when there is more than one category named Tony Martin on the Commons? - --Bossanoven (talk) 17:02, 16 April 2015 (UTC)

@Bossanoven: I don't know. . Could you ask at help desk? (Sorry, it's late) Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:30, 17 April 2015 (UTC)

Why do I have

Hello, why do I have DR Notices? Why am I one your watch list? --BT33015 (talk) 00:33, 18 April 2015 (UTC)

@BT33015: it is an automatically-generated gallery which includes uploads by every user with less than 150 edits. The reason for this is that users with less than 150 edits contribute the vast majority of problematic files on Commons (e.g., copyright violations, non-educational selfies, etc.). Your inclusion on this list only means that you are a new user, not that you are a problematic user.
The "DR notices" means that your talk page contains a notice of a deletion request. This information can help experienced page patrollers to identify problematic uploads. Again, this information does not mean your uploads were (necessarily) problematic - it is just a piece of information which the bot shows to help the community.
I apologize for any confusion. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:24, 18 April 2015 (UTC)

Abhishek copyright infringement

Hi Magog, i am sorry about the mess. Abhishek.bose2033 (talk) 18:42, 19 April 2015 (UTC)

@Abhishek.bose2033: OK. Do you understand why you've been warned? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 20:25, 19 April 2015 (UTC)
Magog, i have two questions:
1) I would like to delete my previous pictures with copyright violation issues. i am using {{speedy|wrong upload}}
For instance in here, am i doing it wrong https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:COMPLETE_cloudburst_of_1000.jpg?
2) If a book is in public domain why is not possible to use that book front cover?
Thank You Abhishek.bose2033 (talk) 21:55, 19 April 2015 (UTC)
@Abhishek.bose2033 Yes, you did that correctly. I deleted the files per your request. It is possible to upload book covers if they have fallen into the public domain in their country of origin. In that case, you can affix this template: {{PD-India}}. If an Indian book cover has no artistic content other than photographs, then the photographs must have been published at least 60 years ago, starting January 1. If it has artistic content, then the artist must have died at least 60 years ago, starting January 1.
If none of these conditions has been fulfilled, we can sometimes upload the covers to English Wikipedia as fair use. But this means some restrictions. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:03, 19 April 2015 (UTC)
Thank You Magog. May i ask You how 'fair use' works? Abhishek.bose2033 (talk) 22:08, 19 April 2015 (UTC)
@Abhishek.bose2033 Yes. You can upload an image, but it must have a lower resolution, have an accompanying text which explains the rationale for its usage, and be used in a very limited context (e.g., it must be informative to the reader and not just decorational). To be frank with you, it's actually quite byzantine, so it might be easier if I just did any uploads for you. Just tell me which pages you want the images on, and I'll tell you what can be done. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:12, 19 April 2015 (UTC)
Magog the Ogre, i am working on this article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thakur_Sitaramdas_Omkarnath Abhishek.bose2033 (talk) 22:19, 19 April 2015 (UTC)

Hi. You made this template to make transfers from wts work better. I think it could perhaps be a good idea to convert the template to regular categories because they are easier to understand and fix (for example with HotCat). What do you think? --MGA73 (talk) 20:08, 21 April 2015 (UTC)

@MGA73: sounds like a good idea. There's only 9 of them, it seems, so it should be quick. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:19, 21 April 2015 (UTC)
Cool. Thank you. I fixed the files and deleted the template. --MGA73 (talk) 16:43, 22 April 2015 (UTC)

retail center data

Dear Magog the Ogre, I'm new to wiki talk feature. I saw your maps for Walmart and Target footprint which gave me hope it is possible to find data for my research work. I'm trying to collect data for all retail centers locations in the US (Walmart, Amazon, Target). I'm collecting data on their (1) type (supermarket, grocery store), (2) location, (3) square feet, (4) year opened. To my understanding the maps you have created for Walmart and Target footprints contain data on location and their square feet? Could you please share web page(s) from which you obtained this data? I've tried to look into US census, but it only gives me information on sales. To my understanding under description of data collection procedure for your maps it wasn't all located on one place. Ideally, I need a list with addresses and size etc. in excel. Are you able to share the data that you have collected for Walmart and Target?

Thank you very much for your help, suggestion.

@Jburek2015: I got the store zip codes by scraping the data off their store locator. I still have the list of zip codes, but it is old, and it doesn't have any other information. You can find similar data aggregated online for free[4] or for a price.[5]
I do not have and I've never had information about the type, square footage, or year opened, nor do I know how to go about retrieving it. You might consider actually asking the store directly, although you'll only get some responses this way. Similarly, maybe you could ask for help at the English Wikipedia refdesk, where someone might know more than I.Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:25, 22 April 2015 (UTC)

Hi Magog,

The licence of this file

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:L%27Humanit%C3%A9_18_Juillet_1922.jpg

is exactly the same as this one :

http://fr.wikisource.org/wiki/Salut_aux_Soviets#/media/File:Salut_aux_Soviets.JPG

Same newspaper, same year.

i got it from the public data base of the National French Library Website, who only spread licence free texts:

The author of the most popular article is Anatole France, who died in 1924.

Cleanup dates 2

Hi Magog the Ogre, thank you for the previous implementation. Another type that even till now seems to be in use is a format like this "20150104". If you have time i would appreciate to include that for cleanup as well. Thank you again, -Arnd (talk) 11:11, 29 April 2015 (UTC)

Hej Magog the Ogre, I've also seen you also remove the template: original upload date completely, why? ExampleUser: Perhelion (Commons: = crap?)  23:03, 29 April 2015 (UTC)
What if it's e.g. 12101230? There might just be a missing dash. --Leyo 23:06, 29 April 2015 (UTC)
@Perhelion: see FAQ #3 at User:OgreBot 2.

Old edit related to WTS

Hi. this edit changed the uploader. Any idea why and/or if it is a single error or there could be many like this? --MGA73 (talk) 07:35, 26 April 2015 (UTC)

Perhaps you could make a one-time-run of "cleanup_multi.php" on all files in Category:Files from Wikivoyage wts (tool only allows to work on 5.000). It is a big help and the number of errors are very low. I noticed this edit that removed {{Own}} but I think it is only something that happens in files with the {{Imagecredit}} but there is only about 20 of those so I'll fix those manually. --MGA73 (talk) 12:54, 26 April 2015 (UTC)
@MGA73: This is a defect in the bot. It only occurs on pages with Template:Wikivoyage and which have bad [[:wts:user:(WT-shared) ...]] links attached (i.e., basically all of them). Unfortunately, I absolutely do not have time to fix this right now (see the rest of my talk page here and on English Wikipedia). Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:24, 26 April 2015 (UTC)
Hi Magog. I eliminated the usage of template Imagecredit and I also fixed the link type [[:wts:user:(WT-shared) ...]]. So there is no need to fix the bot. But if you ever get some time it would be nice if you could run the bot on all files in Category:Files from Wikivoyage wts. I ran the bot at the first 5.000 and it will probably take me at least a month or two to check those files so there is no need to hurry. --MGA73 (talk) 21:55, 27 April 2015 (UTC)
@MGA73: the problem was with images with Template:Wikivoyage, not ImageCredit. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:15, 29 April 2015 (UTC)
@ Magog the Ogre. Okay just forget about ImageCredit - it is gone anyway :-) Your tools are very helpfull when I'm cleaning up the transfers. If you know anything else that makes you bot go crazy just let me know. --MGA73 (talk) 15:27, 30 April 2015 (UTC)

Problem with Creation of a TUSC Account

Hello,
I want to use some of the tools, like the old version filemover, but my problem is, that I can not create an account. Like you can see here, I tried it more than once, and I got the answer "Account creation succesful", but when I tried to log in, I get the answer "login failed". Can you help me with this? Greetings, Luke081515 (talk) 15:23, 12 April 2015 (UTC)

@Magnus Manske: if you could assist with this. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 15:52, 12 April 2015 (UTC)
TUSC is obsolete. All my tools use the OAuth login. Every tool that uses OAuth has an appropriate link. If you have problems, please give the URL of the tool you try to use. --Magnus Manske (talk) 14:27, 23 April 2015 (UTC)
@Magnus Manske: It's toollabs:magog/oldver.php. --Leyo 14:10, 27 April 2015 (UTC)
Does this mean that you are reversing your decision to continue supporting TUSC despite your clear assurances that you would not? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 17:22, 27 April 2015 (UTC)
I haven't touched TUSC; I'll see if it has failed. Meanwhile, I found my geograph uploader doesn't use OAuth, so I'm converting that at the moment. I would strongly suggest you do the same; TUSC has long outlasted its usefulness, and I can't promise to invest much time in maintaining it indefinitely. --Magnus Manske (talk) 13:14, 30 April 2015 (UTC)
Update: Just tried logging in to my existing (Commons) account, and creating a new one (en.wp). Both worked fine for me. --Magnus Manske (talk) 13:39, 30 April 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for having a look at this issue. @Luke081515: Could you please try again? --Leyo 21:18, 30 April 2015 (UTC)
Sorry, but it do not work. When I'm trying to create an account again, after creation I can't log in. And when I'm try to use the account information, the tool don't let me perform an action. @Magnus Manske: Can you look again, please? Greetings, Luke081515 (talk) 18:27, 1 May 2015 (UTC)
@Luke081515: I wouldn't expect a response from Magnus. He ignores threads if they take more than 10 seconds to deal with.[8][9](third bug report from defunct Toolserver omitted) And as you can see from above, he's even willing to go back on his promises if it means he doesn't have to take another hour doing any work.[10] In fact, I created my most prolific bot for the sole reason that he couldn't be arsed to cleanup after his own.[11](see first paragraph) As far as I'm concerned, his tools have outlived their usefulness. Hopefully I can hack something together to give the community a replacement by a bot maintainer who actually gives a shit about the people who use his product.
Sorry for being blunt, but it's high time that I call this spade out for being a spade. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 23:45, 1 May 2015 (UTC)

I try it again, it works now. The only thing, that I changed was, that I try to create this account with the target commons. Before T tried it with the target dewiki (german wikipedia), there it don't work. Thank you, for your help. Greetings, Luke081515 (talk) 20:58, 2 May 2015 (UTC)

OgreBot

Hi there. Your bot keeps adding me to the uploads by new users list. I understand it's automatically generated, but I've been on Wikipedia four years longer than you, I'm a vastly more accomplished photographer than almost anybody else on that page, and I'm quite clearly not a new user. Scrolling through it I see four competent photographers and perhaps a dozen usable images in total, and a tonne of rubbish from people whose removal from the face of the Earth wouldn't hurt the Wikimedia project one iota.

There's an implication that you're treating my work as a commodity when clearly I'm putting a tonne of effort into it, and there's an implication that users who have mass-posted more than 150 files are more valuable than the much smaller pool of competent photographers. Wikipedia has always had problem with persistent but incompetent users, useless people who amass tens of thousands of useless edits because they're sitting at their computer all day with nothing else to do. DeviantArt has the same problem. There's no quality filter, which means that the good people get lumped in with the bad. It's as if you're deliberately trying to attract them. -Ashley Pomeroy (talk) 20:16, 2 May 2015 (UTC)

Hi Ashley Pomeroy. I noticed your comment here. You are right! The bot does not know how to judge quality. The bot can only count the number of edits. It would be nice if we could teach a bot to judge quality. Until that happens we need humans to judge. Copyright questions are really complex and most of the problematic files are uploaded by users with a few edits on Commons. For example a photographer could take a really good photo but if it is a derivative work then we can't keep it unless copyright has expired or if the copyrighted object is de minimis. We have seen examples of users with thousands of edits on WIkipedia and even admins on Wikipedia that uploaded files to Commons that had to be deleted. That is why we have the bot to help human users to notice uploads by users with only a few edits. Our work here would be hard without the bot to help us. --MGA73 (talk) 08:12, 3 May 2015 (UTC)
@Ashley Pomeroy: to echo MGA73's point, the bot is incapable of telling quality. We've had users who have been around for nearly a decade that show really bad quality in their uploads, to the extent that the files need to be deleted. The bot cannot tell one from another.
And MGA73 is correct; Commons has seen a significant decline in userbase of experienced editors while a significant increase has occurred in the number of uploads. To make matters worse, the quality of said uploads has significant decreased at the same time (the reasons are complicated, and have to do with mobile technology and macroeconomic factors in technology). Regardless, the result is that we have just a few users who are able to address problematic uploads. The bots save us precious time and are literally our last line of defense against Commons turning into a MySpace version 2.
Were there a technical way for the bot to judge quality vs. quantity, it absolutely would do so. But there is not; we must rely on human pair of eyes. This is addressed at the FAQ listed at the top of the page: User:OgreBot/Uploads by new users/FAQ.
Let me know if you have any other concerns. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 16:54, 3 May 2015 (UTC)

A new wrinkle

A user with whom there have been prior problems made a POV edit to one of my photos today, see [13]. He labeled an historic Wiyot shrine (much like a European Cathedral), the place where the world renewal ceremonies are held - as an "archaeology site". That would be like saying the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery is an archaeology site because there's dead bodies there somewhere. Or perhaps that Washington's home at Mount Vernon, or Gettysburg field are available for handy shovel work. Of course, any artifacts from Tuluwat in private collections and in museums were looted and are legally required to be returned. I think this POV edit was way out of line and re-edited the page to eliminate it while keeping the fancy coding added to some parts of it. Could you perhaps review the actions? I do not want our native resources labeled to provide any assistance to pot-hunters and grave-robbers which is not uncommon, unfortunately. When I went to say something to the POV editor, I saw there were problems before and am asking for your help with this. Thank you. Ellin Beltz (talk) 16:29, 8 May 2015 (UTC)

That's funny. I didn't notice that the email said cc-by-2.5 and I asked for clarification saying CC-BY-SA-3.0 (what was in the image page). I guess I'll have to ask her again :/ Platonides (talk) 23:02, 9 May 2015 (UTC)

Hello Magog, today i'm missing the daily updates by your wonderful bot on my WLE subpages. Users with copuvio and the filenames

Hello, I noticed you added a topic about filenames to the user Nasirova K and wanted to inform you that such filenames are created because the images are downloaded from the social network VK (this social network creates random filenames), and it seems that all the uploads of this user have copyvio (like, File:F2VxVo-XlO0.jpg, File:LU4SK-rZNgY.jpg) But for some reason Google image search doesn't find them.

Anyway, if you meet some filenames like that in the future, a big possibility is that they are downloaded from VK. --Helixitta (talk) 13:45, 13 May 2015 (UTC)

Shrek

Cher Dresseur de Magog the ogre,

As you say do not speak the french, I'm going to dare me to do a translation (in .user = 1) for your eyes only

Dear trainer of Magog the ogre,
Your bot is also ill-mannered as Shrek!
When in the description of one of my files is found a {{LangSwitch =..., il mean I gave myself the trouble to laboriously write a description in three languages for which I have some rudiments.
You surely agree with me that it is naturally that the date will be encoded with a {{date}} template which, so I believe the documentation is done so that the date is displayed correctly depending on the browser's language tag.
Superfluous precaution all my latest files start with a {{nobots}} which seems should divert your robot to any change whatsoever... Alas, this ogre is a hungry ogre! He still eats my {{date}} forcing them me to return it.
This is the second time I am remonstrated to this ogre without that his trainer happens to obey!...
Have a nice day ! From France --Daniel Villafruela (talk) 06:37, 17 May 2015 (UTC)
