Hello

Hi, I've seen you've recently erased two files I had brought from Flickr. I would have appreciated you had told me something about it... since I have just noticed it now by chance. I'm not an expert about the licenses and rights but I must tell you I wrote to the author before and asked for his permission. I can send you a copy of his answer if you ever need it even though it is in Catalan. Sincerely, Claudi Balaguer/Capsot (talk) 12:27, 16 September 2010 (UTC)

Hi! Sorry to hear that you did not notice that the files failed the review. Normally I inform users but never get a reply so that day I deleted the files that had failed the review. I restored File:SantEnterramentJChueca.jpg and File:AngheluRujuJChueca.jpg and added a "OTRS pending". Please send the permission permissions-commons@wikimedia.org or ask the Flickr user to change the license (the NonCommercial is not ok for Commons). --MGA73 (talk) 14:50, 16 September 2010 (UTC)
Hello again, thanks for your kind comments and advices. I just wanted to let you know that I wrote to the address you told me and that I pasted some of my mail on my userpage. Take care and thanks for the reverting. Have a good night! Capsot (talk) 19:16, 16 September 2010 (UTC)

Copyright of an image of a ticket

I would be interested to learn of your opinion on the copyright status of an image of a ticket: see Commons:Deletion requests/File:Metropolitana di Roma, Italia, ticket, 27-08-2004.jpg. Snowmanradio (talk) 22:31, 14 September 2010 (UTC)

I commented on the DR. --MGA73 (talk) 15:47, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

Reqest for Picasareview

There are a number in Category:Picasa Web Albums files needing human review and Category:Picasa Web Albums review needed. Some of these I uploaded and edited (cropped or removed watermark) after upload and these will need manual review. Snowmanradio (talk) 09:05, 17 September 2010 (UTC)

Isn't this all derivative images which should not be permitted on Commons? The uploader has had several images deleted from his talkpage but left Commons long ago in 2007. If it is, this file should be deleted I think...if you agree, that is. Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 07:32, 17 September 2010 (UTC)

Deleted. --MGA73 (talk) 19:10, 17 September 2010 (UTC)

Ofcourse it is always nice to win. But if you mean File:Brindis Noble Videla.jpg I would be more happy if any problems with the file would be solved. --MGA73 (talk) 16:47, 21 September 2010 (UTC)

Please help

Hello, could you help me delete the 1st version of File:Tottori Sand Dune.jpg uploaded by me? Thank you in advance. --百楽兎 (talk) 10:58, 21 September 2010 (UTC)

✓ Done --MGA73 (talk) 16:47, 21 September 2010 (UTC)

Hi, happy to see you again. The image needs to be checked on your own. Try to check the Licensing and the English description. And add any other language you know for this file introduction. Thank you. --俠刀行 (talk) 16:29, 21 September 2010 (UTC)

It looks ok to me - even if we do not know who made the print. I could not find out who made it but perhaps someone can help. --MGA73 (talk) 17:35, 21 September 2010 (UTC)

Cudos to you for your likely not easy decision at Commons:Deletion requests/Files by User:Kalon macau. --Túrelio (talk) 18:12, 22 September 2010 (UTC)

Thank you. No, it took me some time to decide and find a good reason I hope most users will accept. --MGA73 (talk) 18:15, 22 September 2010 (UTC)

Do you have a list of the files actually claimed to be copyright of macaubus@macaubus.org as emailed to OTRS? Such a list would not only be the files that happen to be listed in this deletion discussion. Your non-consensus based closure rationale should apply to all files that the OTRS received legal challenge applies to. As an example, the file File:Centro de Serviços da RAEM.jpg was uploaded by Kalon macau and has nothing to do (apparently) with the Macaubus.org forum, whilst File:Itinerário do Percurso AP1 da Transmac Macau.jpg was originally uploaded with a Macaubus.org logo but was never listed in the deletion discussion. It should be noted that Kalon macau is a proven puppet master and so other accounts may need your consideration. (talk) 18:37, 22 September 2010 (UTC)

No, I do not. I closed the DR as delete not only because of the copyvio claim as you can see in the DR. I deleted the rest of the files by User:Kalon macau. --MGA73 (talk) 19:04, 22 September 2010 (UTC)
I disagree with deleting files not listed in the deletion discussion (which appears to have been pre-emptively closed after intervention by Jimbo) or listed in any legal correspondence of copyright claims as received through OTRS. You appear to be acting unilaterally and outside the deletion process guidelines. Deleting files which have no apparent connection with Macaubus.org as they were never hosted on that website or carried any Macaubus logo seems arbitrary and in some cases against local consensus when individual discussions for some photos were 100% in favour of keeping useful images. (talk) 19:15, 22 September 2010 (UTC)
I noted your point of view. I did not expect all users to agree. I tried to give a good reason to deletion. One reason was uploader requested and another was that user is not trustworthy or wanted on Commons. I deleted because I thought those reasons could apply to the other files by that user. --MGA73 (talk) 19:20, 22 September 2010 (UTC)

Help on this cat

Dear Michael,

Can you create a separate cat for Terry Farrell, the actress? There are 2 Terry Farrell's. One is an architect and one is the actress here: [1] I'm trying to create a separate cat for her...and add things like:

  • Category:Actors from the United States born in the 1960s
  • Category:Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
  • Category:Living people
  • Category:People from Iowa

The existing cat goes to Farrell the architect....which is no good here. Pls help. I worked very hard to get this image for her wiki article and now this problem happens. PS: I'm sure the flickr review bot will pass the image but I'm worried about the category. Best Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 20:04, 22 September 2010 (UTC)

Done... Except that I did not get all the categories because you added them later :-D --MGA73 (talk) 20:13, 22 September 2010 (UTC)
  • That's OK. I'll add them myself. Thank you for all your kind help. I would not have thought of adding a German version of her name either. I didn't know one could create disambigulate cats but I guess one learns something new each day. Best Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 20:20, 22 September 2010 (UTC)

Hi! I read renaming guidelines and I understand the point about English language. But what about the painter's name? Isn't it a very good reason to change a filename? And if not, then why you have changed this filename just a minute before???? By the way - it could be changed into "Claude Monet - La casa entre las rosas", if changing language to lingua franca is unacceptable. Marac (talk) 15:52, 24 September 2010 (UTC)

The reason I changed the first file is that you uploaded the larger version and therefore I thought of you as the uploader. Uploader can do pretty much as (s)he likes. We keep the name uploader chooses unless it is meaningless, misleading etc. (as mentioned in "the rules". When a file is renamed it is often allowed to change "freely". So if the name is in Spanish but is identified wrongly then it would be ok to change into the right one in English. --MGA73 (talk) 16:15, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
OK, thanks for explanations. But... the guidelines say: "change meaningless bio-names into binomial scientific names" and "File:TowerBridge'09.jpg should not be renamed to File:Tower_Bridge_2009.jpg only because the latter looks a bit better." I think changing "title.jpg" into "painter - title.jpg" is analogous to the above case of scientific names. Because the painter's name is as important in painting's filename as a proper spieces name in a picture of animal. IMHO it would not look "a bit better", but "whole lotta better". Don't you think that is would be very useful on Commons if a search for "Monet" would return all the files with his paintings? Just like with pictures of animals named with a proper scientific name... "La casa entre las rosas.jpg" is completely meaningless from the "art" point of view. It's not a unique name like "Mona Lisa" or "Venus de Milo".
"When a file is renamed it is often allowed to change "freely"." - what do you mean? I don't understand this sentence... Marac (talk) 16:38, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
I tried to explain in that in the next sentence above. If file is named in Spanish but the name is wrong then you can rename to the correct name in Spanish but you can also choose to translate to English and you can also add name of painter and you can add the year if you think it would be relevant. --MGA73 (talk) 16:45, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
So in my opinion "La casa entre las rosas.jpg" is "wrong", because it lacks the painter's name. See the explanation above. Don't you agree with the above justification? And if so, may I ask why? Whether the filename should be changed simply by adding the painter's name, or by changing the language to "international" English as well is of much less importance. And I can definitely live with a rule forbidding a change with a language as the only reason, even if I have a different view. But I will insist on adding painters' names to paintings, unless you give me a good reason why it is a bad idea and why it is not an analogous case to scientific names. Marac (talk) 17:17, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
We have no rule that says that the name of the painters name must be in the name and therefore a file name without the name of the painter is not an error. At the momement we have concensus to keep the name the uploader choose with the exceptions mentioned in the rename policy. It is not just to respect the uploaders wish but to reduce the amount of work spend to rename files. You think that the name should include the name of the painter and others would probably prefer that it was not included. Files can also be used outside Commons and Wikipedia so every time we rename a file we risk to "break a link" somewhere on the Internet. So we rename only if needed.
If you think that adding the name of the artist is a good idea you can make a suggestion and explain why and then other users can comment. If you can persuade enough users then that could be a new reason to rename. --MGA73 (talk) 18:12, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
Now it's clear, thanks! One more thing, and I'll stop bothering you. :) Could you point me to the best page for starting a discussion on a policy change? Should it be Village Pump, Rename Guidelines talk page or somewhere else? Marac (talk) 18:30, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
The reason I did not tell you before is that I was not quite sure... I suggest on Commons talk:File renaming and a notice on Village Pump. --MGA73 (talk) 18:33, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
Thanks! :) Marac (talk) 18:36, 24 September 2010 (UTC)

This DR

Should this image from Persian wikipedia be deleted? Two people on wiki thought it was a copyright violation (when I raised its identification with Admin dougweller) and it became a DR here. I could not personally object since I trust they are both right. But check the image if you wish. Thank You...on whatever decision you make. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 08:29, 24 September 2010 (UTC)

Yes it looks like it. Would be nice if a "local" admin would delete it (they understand the language) but if not I will delete it this weekend. --MGA73 (talk) 15:24, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
  •  Comment: Someone now objects to its deletion. The image looks like a poster but as I said on wikipedia, I'm not 100% sure. I had asked Dougweller there (1-2 weeks ago) what it was since this picture was unidentified (and uncatalogued) and the first 2 people in the DR said it was likely a date palm and probably a copyright violation. What am I to think? I can't read Persian. All I can do is look at the picture and ask MGA to look closely at the picture. Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 20:05, 24 September 2010 (UTC)

Comment

Marac made an objection here Maybe you know someone who can be certain it is a copy vio. As for me, I put up my hands and surrender. It looks like a poster but I am not 100% sure...but then I did not file the DR. It was the person on wiki who saw the image on Admin Dougweller's talkpage and objected who filed the DR. Sigh! --Leoboudv (talk) 01:19, 25 September 2010 (UTC)

Elvis pictures by the same uploader

I guess its 'Elvis time' today.

First of all, should this image be deleted or can you check to see if there is any permission for it.

I am concerned because the license is wrong and the image is almost 1 month old now. And you have access to OTRS. Perhaps it should be DR'ed but I cannot do this. Only you can because only you can check if there is a valid OTRS message. People would trust you since they can see you have such access too.

Secondly, this image below cannot be kept since there is no COM:FOP for modern statues in the US. It is also located inside a building which means it is on private property:

Finally, does FOP apply to Elvis' grave or can Commons keep this nice photo:

As I said, its Elvis' time today. Time to rock and roll a little with your response. (just kidding!) Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 08:58, 27 September 2010 (UTC)

Elvis has left Commons :-( but the grave was kept. I only see some text so I do not think there is a problem. --MGA73 (talk) 17:33, 27 September 2010 (UTC)
  •  Comment: Thanks for your reply. I was hoping the grave image could be kept as the photo was not a direct head on shot of the tomb too. Its a pity Elvis died young but even today too many stars cannot cope with success--like Lindsey Lohan, MJ. Its a sad story because once they become stars, all these 'agents' approach them and want a 'piece of the action' and these young stars cannot handly being instant superstars. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 19:49, 27 September 2010 (UTC)

Pay attention to copyright
File:Demi_Lovato_2009,jpg.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Whats the difference

between [2] and [3]? Rauenstein (talk) 20:32, 7 October 2010 (UTC)

That is a really good question. For some reason the first version thinks that the file should be in Category:License migration candidates. It should'nt. There must be an error in the template somewhere. I'll have a look. Thank you for reporting. --MGA73 (talk) 20:35, 7 October 2010 (UTC)
Oh. Now I get it :-) The GFDL-template can not be combined with other templates unless there is a "Self|". If you look at the first version the only visible license is GFDL. --MGA73 (talk) 20:38, 7 October 2010 (UTC)
