IP troll[edit]

Those comments were very likely made by a IP troll who pops up occasionally to take pot shots at reviewers. We don't permit IP to vote and nor should they have any say in how others vote or criticise voting. Before restoring his remarks, you might want to consider whether you are improving Commons or just permitting a coward to be nasty. -- Colin (talk) 18:41, 12 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You can take contribution to the FPC discussion as an answer here. Additionally Kelvin also made an important point: IPs don't write comments, users do. But in most cases you cannot just simply infer from an IP that the comment came from the same user... --LC-de (talk) 20:38, 12 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Replied there. Both of you are lacking the facts and your comments have nothing to do with FPC. Now, if you want to discuss how we review images and assess them as "among our finest" then I'll happily talk to you. If you want to encourage IP trolls... -- 20:45, 12 March 2015 (UTC)

FPC[edit]

Hi, Derogatory comment like this does not bring anything useful, and Colin was right to revert it. Regards, Yann (talk) 08:08, 13 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The starter was adressing some problems with his critics (which are often enough hard on the edge of being derogatory themselves) and then deleting the comment criticizing himself. This looks at least a bit odd to me. If someone is fond of giving harsh critics he should also be able to stand harsh responses. The further reaction then brings me to the conclusion, that the IP might made some valid points here. But I partially agree with you: It was a completely useless comment to a completely useless starter. I won't follow up this discussion anymore. Too much fecal words flying around... but interesting enough: not from the IP... --LC-de (talk) 10:24, 13 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't have reverted it if made by a logged-in user prepared to stick his user name against it, but it's a familiar IP troll. I'm fine with harsh responses by users who sign their posts with a name, what I'm not so happy about is the "please respect my opinions" response which is falsely trying to use some invented etiquette to say "don't critise my review". Equally phony is the "all opinions are equal" viewpoint, when used for the same purpose. Many people at FPC forum are interested in improving both their photographic and their review skills (myself included) and welcome rational criticism of both. Those who can't handle and learn from criticism need to do some growing up. Since I'm not actually editing votes or deleting candidates, the "playing God" idea is just a random insult of no use. For all my concerns expressed, they are just words, nothing more, and people can respond with intelligent discussion or ignore as they see fit. But insults from IPs, we can do without: by definition they are not part of this community and have no vote and no voice. Logging in isn't that hard. -- Colin (talk) 10:56, 13 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
So is it a familiar IP troll? What makes you confident that it is always the same user behind a given IP if they are dynamically assigned? And where is the difference to a logged-in user? It could give you more confidence, that this is really the same user. So on one side you delete comments because you think its from a certain user, but you cannot be sure, but if you can be sure, you wouldn't do it? Sounds a bit odd to me from a logical point of view.
I also would strongly oppose the opinion, that IPs are not part of the community. Of course they are. The whole Wiki philosophy is based on the principle that everyone can take part who wants to. This also includes users who don't want to create accounts, log in, forgot it, whatever. The fact, that the configuration used for this project doesn't prevent IP comments can be seen as a manifestation of this principle.
So I would oppose any comment deletion as long as it wasn't offensive, out of topic or in other ways against agreed rules. It might be impolite to bring up controversal accusations without logging in. It is impolite to just delete those comments as well. --LC-de (talk) 11:48, 16 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia is the encyclopaedia anyone can edit. Commons is not. You can't upload files without an account and you can't vote at FP without an account. By and large, IPs don't edit here and don't participate at FP. There's no such "wiki philosophy". You know quite well why someone might post trolling comments as an IP. There are no reasons for such behaviour that improve Commons. -- Colin (talk) 12:06, 16 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

( Bernd Gross, 6. August 2015)

Wiki Loves Earth 2016[edit]
