First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons:License questions.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Thank you for your comments in Lar's recent RfA![edit]

Dear Kylu: I would like to thank you for your support in my recent RfA which passed 20 to 1. I really appreciate the trust you've placed in me. Please help me be a better admin by giving me feedback when you think I need it, and praise when you think I've earned it.

Wow, Kylu... What can I say? I still use your .js stuff here, it's stood me in good stead for a long time now. I just can't believe how supportive and helpful you've been, especially on en:wp, but here too. I hope you spend more time over here, it's a very cool and friendly place... thank you, thank you, for all your help. ++Lar: t/c 04:21, 12 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I chose LEGO to illustrate my thank you messagess, because LEGO is a system that we build things with. Commons holds the building blocks that other wikis use to make great things. Without Commons images and media, other wikis would be much poorer. Let's help build the greatest freely available intellectual collection the world has ever known... together.
*blush* I'll get working on the translations soonish, really! o.o;; Anywho, thanks. :) ~Kylu (u|t) 23:09, 12 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've been pestering some of our international friends about this. The only place I'm having absolutely no luck is in Arabic, probably because my Arabic stinks and I have yet to get the hang of wikilinking English pages into Arabic script. Just does not want to work right for me.
Example:
Thanks for experimenting with Commons. Your test worked, and has been reverted or removed. Please use the sandbox for any other tests you want to do. Take a look at the community portal if you would like to learn more about contributing. Thanks.
Use "الصندوق الرمل" for "Sandbox" and "بوابة المجتمع" for "Community Portal". Now, once you've found the sections you need to modify (remembering that it's a right-to-left language) try wikilinking it. Pain In The Arse. Really. And you can't just translate one word at a time, since grammatical syntax is different... If you do manage it, that should go into by the way.
~Kylu (u|t) 21:42, 15 November 2006 (UTC) (who has now stopped ranting)[reply]
Sorry, but i didn't understand what you said in my talk page. Try it in english... Anyway, thanks for helping us with the translations. As the Portuguese Wikipedia community decides to block uploads there, we think is important to translate everything what's possible. Thx again. -GAD talk ð contributions 22:43, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That's why I was begging people to help translate: While I can get things close at times, we really need more people that know the language well to help translate. Thanks again! ~Kylu (u|t) 23:04, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there[edit]

Sorry about your nomination. The Arabic links, what can I say, I am having trouble my self with that. You need to have a RTL enabled system to get the render right. To do that you need to install an Arabic keyboard layout. That will make life much easier for you. Any way I will try to translate the templates in Commons:Message templates/todo. I already did some. Hope to see you more in commons. Oh, :), I am a He not a She. See ya --Tarawneh 00:40, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Aha, sorry about that! Someone on the infamous IRC said you were a she, that's what I get for not asking first! Forgive! Anywho, I've got RTL enabled, but it's a real pain in the arse trying to embed wikilinks in RTL languages. Arabic seems to absolutely love moving my brackets all over the place after I've typed. Fortunately, that's not often a problem I run across. Thanks! ~Kylu (u|t) 04:57, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
what happens when you switch typing direction from LTR into RTL? Or when you preview, does render ok? And are you using IE? --Tarawneh 12:07, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Do you mean switching typing direction while in the middle of already-written script?
Let's say I want to make "sandbox" here linked to Commons:Sandbox:
وهو ]]الصندوق الرمل[[ That's what it looks like when I try to surround الصندوق الرمل with square brackets.
Anyway, no, I use Firefox. Any ideas why it does that? ~Kylu (u|t) 04:20, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Kyulu, could you add mg (Malagasy) to it please? Thanks in advance.
More complicated : add a specific background style to each column, compute for each language the percentage of templates already translated and update the column background styles with the result represented on a red to green scale :)
Best regards from France,
-- AlNo (talk) 14:00, 22 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, give me a few moments and it'll be added. I'm a bit confused as to why you'd want the second, when you could simply look at the number of red and blue links though... and wouldn't that make it all harder to read? I may be wrong, so make sure you get back to me. ~Kylu (u|t) 18:44, 22 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, thanks for having added mg:. About the background color request, forget it: as you say, it is too much complicated as you may have no mean from your code to know if a given template is available or not :)
Best regards from France,
-- AlNo (talk) 09:07, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeh, sorry about that. Tell me if you want a custom matrix for your own languages though, hey? ~Kylu (u|t) 23:49, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, that's too is not useful to me: I work directly from the big matrix, as I regularly check new entries in any language so that I can fix categorization.

Hi Kylu, I'm back to you to ask you if you could build a similar todo table for each template category listed on Commons:Tag_categories? This is definately not an emergency, but would help for internationalization efforts :)

About my Blocking[edit]

Okay ive read the image policy notes etc and i can only tell you that i used to get easily confused on copyright license etc. and i wont in future.Ever since joining wikipedia the fierce amount of guidelines has been mind boggling and i have not had any time to go over everything as i have been busy juggling between recent exams,a summer job etc.My problems dealing with the images are not intentional as i have been trying to sort out as soon as possible.I'm quite new to wikipedia and so havent been through the ropes totally. Its only in the last month or so that ive just gotten time to actually put up pictures --- Joxernolan The preceding unsigned comment was added by 86.41.134.167 (talk • contribs) at 14:40, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

RfA[edit]

Hi - just to say that I quoted you in my own RfA - I think you hit the nail on the head when you said the below & hope you don't mind me quoting you. While I don't think that admin "powers" will really improve my commons experience in itself, I do think it will make it easier to deal with problems when they do come up. Adminship isn't really there to improve my experience as much as it is to try to help improve the experience of others. Kind regards, Deadstar (msg) 07:53, 11 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Kylu/archive, congratulations! You now have the rights of administrator on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and Commons:Deletion requests), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.

Updates needed[edit]

Please update your entries here: Commons:List of administrators, as well as the other referenced pages, with your languages, and please add babel boxes somewhere, preferably here, I looked on several wikis and I am deuced if I can remember exactly what all the many languages you know and the levels... :) Thanks!!!! ++Lar: t/c 01:42, 16 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

...all my languages and the levels? In babel boxes? Okay, you asked for it... :) ~Kylu (u|t) 02:02, 16 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I did indeed ask for it. But you only updated the one page mentioned, I had to do the other ones it links to. Boo hoo. ++Lar: t/c 03:50, 18 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You know, for some reason I had it in my head that commons had some "magic" code that did that automatically. I didn't even check. :( ~Kylu (u|t) 13:39, 18 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Not that I know of, but I bet there are several ways to achieve it... one master list of admins including their dates and language codes as sortable fields in a table? A bot that reads the data and generates views? One beef I have with the current "by language" is that there isn't an easy way to find high competency level, but non native, admin speakers of a given lang since the admins are present only by their native langs. One master data source, as you know, means that the other data views are always accurate, too. Homm... who do I know that's clever enough to devise a nifty solution for this? ;-P ++Lar: t/c 13:53, 18 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
pgk? I figure, there's two ways to do this:
 1. Get a bot to look at the main table and adjust the others as-needed.
 2. Make dynamic tables and ... hm, why not just use sortable tables somehow? Something to think about. ~Kylu (u|t) 05:27, 19 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

On this page you said: "This is a discussion, not a vote. Comments like "Keep, good image" are irrelevant and will not help things", I would just like to point out that while you are correct as to what should happen, in reality, if many people comment, it does become a vote, there are many examples of discussions which should have ended in delete clearly, but an administrator closed it as Keep, without giving any reason. I can find you some if you don't believe me. The same policy exists on wikipedia, but I once asked an admin why he had decided to keep a page, and he said because most people seemed to be for keeping it at the time. Don't be surprised if it just gets closed as keep with no reason given. Perhaps people don't do that to other admins, but they definitely don't hesitate doing it to images I have nominated for deletion. Jackaranga 16:50, 29 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Quite true, quite true, though those of us who do realize that consensus != voting should do our best to inform the others as to how Wikimedia projects are actually supposed to be run. I'm a bit saddened, actually, that you sound nearly as if you've thrown in the towel on the matter: The only way we can prevent mob rule is by the continued efforts to educate the members of our community. I'm rather tempted to suggest that admins strike out any vote that seems to rely on WP:ILIKEIT as immaterial to the discussion. Possibly, we could extend those to "per <nom/name of other party>" opinions also, as they fail to add to the discussion and tend to push decision-making into vote-like mechanisms. Opine, please. ~Kylu (u|t) 03:42, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Update for the curious[edit]

Okay, so, "Kylu's not around on wiki-anything lately, why is that?"

Well, things come and go, and lately I've spent more time and money than I'd like on health-related issues. Nothing for anyone to worry about other than myself, but I'm going to have to do a bit better budgeting in order to get rid of the "the remainder is your responsibility" bills. I hate to think how much the health industry gouges people who don't have insurance at all!

Anywho, apologies to Commons for my continued absence. Sorry people. :( ~Kylu (u|t) 00:19, 27 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My image of letter from Sharon to Wechsler was deleted at the turnerbrook reserve[edit]

Hi Kylu:

I'm sorry I didn't know you were concerned with the copyright status of my scan of the letter from Ariel Sharon to Ben Wechsler. I had discussed the issue with Wafulz (see copy below) and he said he would help. I have permission from Ben Wechsler to use the letter. What can I do to help resolve this issue? Thanks, Pete Bertine

Forward:

Hi Wafulz:

Kylu deleted the sharon letter I uploaded. I have permission from Wechsler to use it (I'm getting permission for the other deleted images) and I was under the impression that the sharon letter was placed in the right category. Shouldn't Kylu have said something to me before deleting it? What is the process to get it back up in wikimedia? Thanks, Pete Bertine

--74.65.194.153 22:11, 20 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You weren't logged in when you posted this, but I note that there are a number of image notices on your logged-in user talkpage that detail what is needed when uploading images. Basically, though, make sure you fill out each section of the upload form when you're uploading an image and you shouldn't have problems. If you aren't the creator of the media and they haven't publicly given a free license (which requires permission to redistribute and for commercial usage), you shouldn't upload it at all, really, unless it's out-of-copyright. Frankly, I don't know how copyright works in the instance of letters, since there's a certain minimum creative input that's required before a copyright is granted (for instance, a directory listing isn't copyrightable) yet a poem is.
If you get permission, send it to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org please. I'm one of the OTRS agents for Wikimedia, so I can verify permission if needed. Once you have the information needed, let me know and we can recover the image and mark it properly. :)
Anyway, don't worry too much, I'll help if you'd like! ~Kylu (u|t) 01:26, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks ![edit]

Hi Kylu,

I'm just getting my feet wet here on wikieverything and it's great fun. Everyone has been really very helpful. I'm trying to save as much of Ben Wechsler's archives as I can before he passes away and he really enjoys seeing an objective account on the internet of some of the "things" he's been involved with in his life (I got an 89 year old contributing to Wikipedia, yea!). I'll do my best to figure out how to handle the Sharon Letter with Ben this weekend when I visit with him. One of the most important projects he worked on in his life was a radio show called America Sings that he produced in 1960 for westinghouse and featured artists that were part of the Mcarthy Blacklist. The program was one of several that finally killed the black list once and for all. Ben thinks it would be a wonderful audio addition to Wikimedia and wants to deal with the copyright issues to upload it and tell the story. I am overwhelmed with the one of a kind recordings he has in all different mediums of image and audio... how the heck do I upload a kinescope and deal with the 1950's copyright issues?!? Ugh.

Again, it is all great fun and thank you again for your help.

On another topic: my sister www.kathrynbertine.com has done some great stuff. Is there anyway that I can be involved with putting her on wikipedia ?

Pete --Petebertine 07:02, 25 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Glad you're getting the hang of things here! The best thing I think you could do, perhaps, would be to check out en:GFDL and en:Wikipedia:Text of the GNU Free Documentation License, see if you could explain that to him, then see if he'll agree to give you a blanket license to cover all the materials. Once you're got that, give me a yell and I can explain how to send the permission to the Foundation, where I'll file it and give you an "OTRS reference number" so that you can reference the permission when you upload things that are under his copyright.
As far as the kinescope issues go, I'm not totally sure how to convert that to digital format (got a RadioShack handy?) but, as long as you have permission from the copyright holder, you'd send it in the same way you would for Mr. Wechsler's contributions. Note, however, that just because a company went defunct perhaps, doesn't mean that the recordings aren't copyrighted. You'll still have to find who inherited the rights to them and get permission. Happily, if you explain you want to upload them using the GFDL to Wikipedia, they'll typically have no problems letting you.
If your sister wishes to contribute, please feel free to either encourage her to make an account and start contributing or alternatively (again) have her give you a license that we can receive so we can host her works.
If you run into any problems, let me know and I'll be happy to assist! ~Kylu (u|t) 01:56, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

An often mentioned fault? (in myself?)[edit]

Hey,

There is no way that I am the first to bring this up because I am a moron.

When I clicked through to here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:ParadigmShiftsFrr15Events.jpg I wound up on wikimedia commons; however, there is text from wikipedia and all the internal links are dead. I tried to edit the page so that the first link Paradigm Shifts had a web link to the wikipedia page for paradigm shifts, but it's not sticking.

I'm now annoyed, which means that I have hit the upper level of my abilities and will soon get all pouty.

Why do the links go dead? Do you think this should be fixed? Can I help? Why do I now feel really stupid for doing what I though was really clever by editing in a web link only to have the whole damn thing ignore me like all the hot chicks in high school?

Thanks.

--Petebertine 19:55, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for asking, even if I'm not totally sure I follow completely. Hopefully this answers your question: If you want to link (on commons) to a page on English Wikipedia, use a link like this: :en:Paradigm Shifts ... the :en part makes it a regular link (instead of showing up in the "in other languages" box under the toolbox). If you'd like to make the text link there and say something else (I prefer "clean" inter-project links, myself) use alternate text. I've done some cleaning on the page in question, should look better now, though I've left :en links plain, that way the commons-user can tell that it's a link to Wikipedia and not a Commons gallery page. Also, it's best to avoid editing image pages on projects where the image is on commons: it'll just confuse people. And yes, Wiki editing has its esoteric parts. :) I hope that helps! ~Kylu (u|t) 05:41, 29 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for taking part in my RFA. It passed 29-5-0, and I appreciate and will take to heart all of the feedback, and do my absolute best to better Commons with the trust placed in me by the community as a whole. rootology (T) 17:15, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
