First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Bonjour. Pour les portraits au fusain que j'ai téléchargés, pourquoi ne sont-elles pas adéquates, les catégories "Scientist from France" (initialement j'avais mis "French scientist" mais cela a été changé) et "Muséum n h n" ? Salut @Maisrimer: , et bravo pour ces magnifiques fusains, ils viennent soulager le grand besoin que Wikipédia avait d'illustrer tous ces articles sur tous ces scientifiques français. Pour la catégorie du Muséum national (celle-là, clic ici), c'est dans la hiérarchie des sous-catégories qu'il faut aller les placer tes fusains... soit dans Category:Professeur at the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle pour ceux et celles qui ont le titre de professeur, soit dans Category:People associated with the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle pour ceux et celles qui ne l'ont pas. Quant à la catégorie Scientists from France, si tu regardes bien dans la catégorie tu y trouveras bel et bien les catégories des scientifiques en question, par exemple la catégorie de Jean-Louis Heim. Dans Commons, au moment de placer une image dans des catégories, on applique différents principes dont le principe de modularité que tu trouveras décrit dans Commons:Categories (modularity principle) et qui dit comme suit : The page (file, category) should be put in the most specific category/categories that fit(s) the page (not directly to its parent categories). Donc voilà le principe : not directly to its parent categories. Autrement dit, dans la mesure du possible, ni l'image elle-même ni les catégories dans lesquelles elle est immédiatement contenue... ne doivent aller ensuite dans les catégories de la hiérarchie supérieure. Par exemple, il est normal de placer cette image de Philippe Taquet dans les catégories Espace des sciences, Philippe Taquet et 2013 in paleontology... mais pas dans la categorie Scientists from France puisque la catégorie Philippe Taquet est déjà dans la catégorie Male biologists from France, qui elle-même est dans la catégorie Male scientists from France, qui elle est à son tour dans la catégorie Scientists from France. Pour tes fusains je crois que la catégorisation est correcte mais je vérifierai tout de même au cas par cas, juste pour être sûr. Salut et merci à nouveau pour tous les efforts que tu fais. Cher @Maisrimer: , me voilà de retour. J'ai vérifié les catégories et j'ai été ammené à corriger la catégorisation du portrait que tu as fait d'Hervé Le Guyader (celui-là je l'avais oublié !). Maintenant les catégories de ces douzes fusains me semblent correctes. Pour comprendre la catégorisation de ces fusains, va dans la page de tes imports et, par exemple, clique sur l'image "Pr. François Doumenge, géographe et naturaliste français.jpg"... tu verras que l'image est dans la catégorie "François Doumenge" et que la catégorie "François Doumenge" est dans la catégorie "Scientists from France". À présent, pourrais-tu s'il te plaît voir en quoi le logo de La Jaÿsinia [1] est différent de ceux de la Ménagerie [2], de la Réserve de la Haute-Touche [3] ou du Musée de l'Homme [4] ? Salut @Maisrimer: j'espère que tu vas bien. Ici nous sommes dans Commons, pas dans Wikipédia en français. Regarde bien où tu as téléversé tous ces logos qui ne présentent pas de problèmes (la Ménagerie, la réserve de la Haute-Touche et le musée de l'Homme) : ils sont tous dans Wikipédia en français, ils ne sont pas dans Commons. @Maisrimer: Mais non mon ami, si tu ne lis pas jusqu'au bout tu ne tomberas pas sur les liens d'import sur Wikipédia. Continue de lire les instructions (en ignorant les imports dans Commons) jusque la section "Exceptions". Là tu cliqueras sur le lien "importer un logo de marque déposée", c'est là que ça se passe. Yes I am a fossil, dear Kintaro ! the evidence ? j'étais bien passé par là, j'ai lu de haut en bas les deux pages explicatives (la générale et celle sur les logos), MAIS quand je clique à gauche sur "télécharger un fichier" cela me renvoie à la page explicative... il faudrait un "assistant d'import sur le Wiki français" et je ne l'ai pas encore trouvé.
Autre chose qui n'a rien à voir. Un projet de livre à but non-lucratif. Photos + haikus sur le MNHN en tant que jardin thérapeutique, jardin d'utopie, lieu de diffusion des connaissances, lieu de rêverie... Salut @Maisrimer: , j'ai essayé de téléverser moi-même le fichier et tout se serait bien passé si le système ne m'avait pas bloqué automatiquement à la suite du conflit généré avec le fichier que tu as toi-même importé de Commons le 23 août. Il faut donc attendre que les administrateurs de Commons effacent le fichier existant dans Commons et, ensuite, 1) éventuellement, que les administrateurs de Wikipédia en français effacent le fichier importé depuis Commons ou... 2) autrement éventuellement que le fichier importé reste sur Wikipédia en français (on verra si c'est le cas) et dans ce cas il suffira de lui ajouter le bandeau de la licence. Sinon, à part ça, je prends bien compte de votre projet de livre, mais la rentrée est arrivée et maintenant, contre toute attente, je suis pris dans un tourbillon de corvées qui vont me réclamer pour les mois à venir. Bon courage pour votre projet. Pour le fichier du logo de La Jaÿsinia, comme je disais, je propose d'attendre que tout redevienne comme avant... et alors il faudra téléverser le logo DANS WIKIPÉDIA :) Kintaro (talk) 20:38, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
