File:A New Frontier (8973491906).jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Glrx, the description on these images changed after I uploaded them, when I uploaded them it said they were property of NASA and were available in the public domain. John Cummings (talk) 09:54, 15 November 2017 (UTC)

That is not true. The file history shows that you uploaded the file from Flicker using Manske's upload bot. Each of the descriptions at the time of upload credits the artist and includes "all rights reserved". See, for example, the 31 December 2013 upload for When Thoughts Turn Inwards, where the description states, "Artist: Henry Casselli, 1981 Media: Watercolor Astronaut John Young reflects pensively as he suits up for launch on April 12, 1981. Casselli conveys a quiet, almost spiritual moment when the astronaut must mentally prepare for his mission. This was the first time that the newly inaugurated space shuttle would carry humans, in this case the two-person crew of John Young and Robert Crippen. Image Credit: Henry Casselli All rights reserved Courtesy: NASA Art Program". The description text has not changed. The 2013 text was a copy of the NASA on the Commons page; that text is also the same today.[1]
The selected license template was {{PD-USGov-NASA}}. Here's the version of that template in force at the time. The template states, "This file is in the public domain in the United States because it was solely created by NASA. NASA copyright policy states that "NASA material is not protected by copyright unless noted". Copyright was noted.
Given the information available at the time, you should not have uploaded the images.
Furthermore, you apparently uploaded the Annie Leibovitz picture of Collins and had notice of that copyright violation in a message above dated 3 January 2014. At that point, you should have reviewed your other NASA uploads and requested their deletion.
Glrx (talk) 16:55, 15 November 2017 (UTC)
Glrx, I'm sorry for not explaining myself well. The descriptions on Flickr did not include the image credit in the plain text (e.g Image Credit: Henry Casselli, All Rights Reserved) at the time I uploaded them, this was added some time between when I uploaded them and now. They only included the description and PD license (which the files still display for some reason). Since NASA told me they were in the public domain I assumed that NASA PD status extended to work created by artists under contract by a US Federal Government agency. John Cummings (talk) 17:05, 15 November 2017 (UTC)
Bullshit. You uploaded the description text with "all rights reserved". That's what the file page history shows. The text existed on the Flickr page when you did the upload. You assume too much about the images. There's no evidence that the images were works for hire; known artists were given extraordinary access to NASA facilities so they could ply their art. NASA gets to display the art, but there is a copyright. Glrx (talk) 17:15, 15 November 2017 (UTC)
Glrx Ah, sorry, I see what you mean, my mistake. I guess I made it because of the license on the page. Please try and be civil to people on the internet, we are actually real. John Cummings (talk) 17:29, 15 November 2017 (UTC)

Hi, could you guide me to where File:BigRep colours.jpg was posted? The source you gave doesn't have it. Anarchyte (work | talk) 15:02, 11 January 2018 (UTC)

Anarchyte it was available in this page when I uploaded it, I guess because it is an older model it has been removed, however its on the Wayback Machine here. John Cummings (talk) 15:24, 11 January 2018 (UTC)
Thanks! I'll review them now. Anarchyte (work | talk) 15:29, 11 January 2018 (UTC)
I've reviewed the ones I could, but File:DUSTER, a 3D printed 2m wide drone.jpg, File:Ocke stool printed on a BigRep.jpg, File:Rene Gurka, CEO of BigRep.jpg, and File:Stephan Beyer, CEO of BigRep.jpg aren't listed on any of the archived versions. Anarchyte (work | talk) 15:33, 11 January 2018 (UTC)
Thanks Anarchyte, I'm not sure what to do, the images were on the page when I uploaded them, this must be a problem people face regularly with linkrot.... John Cummings (talk) 19:03, 11 January 2018 (UTC)
@Green Giant: What happens in these sorts of situations? Anarchyte (work | talk) 01:14, 12 January 2018 (UTC)
@Anarchyte: and John. Apologies for the slow, snail-like response but I was comfortably asleep when you pinged me and I’ve been at work for a few hours now. My first instinct is "Hmm...John Cummings?" From my brief wiki-encounters with him, I’m tempted to say, "Guilty as charged!" Only kidding! No, in these sorts of cases I would recommend a fair amount of discretion. Taking File:DUSTER, a 3D printed 2m wide drone.jpg as an example, initially I would do a Google search to see if there are any cached images. If not, then try the archive.org service (which is very comprehensive for top-level pages but doesn’t always record lower-level pages). In this case, when I’ve Googled the image, I note that there are copies on several websites. Click on the "More sizes" link and it shows a number of copies with their locations. I then clicked on one that links from the company website, the page of which (bigrep.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/) is inaccessible to us mere mortals. However, from the options at Google, we can access a copy of the image in the company website at bigrep.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/Drone.jpg. The date on that image is April 2016, and there is nothing to suggest it wouldn’t have been on the company website in August when John came ambling along, perusing their wares. On the current web page linked to by John, it says "Our pictures can be reused under the CC BY license", with a link to CC-BY-2.0. For our purposes as humble Wikimedians, that is sufficient to review this license and give it a thumbs-up. I’ll leave it you Anarchyte, to check the last few. If you find that’s not possible, I’m afraid we would have to resort to asking the company if they could send a license via OTRS. John, I would recommend caution with every image that is not your own, sourced from such websites - submit them for license review ASAP! I hope that helps. Cheers. Green Giant (talk) 18:14, 12 January 2018 (UTC)

Thanks Green Giant, how do I request a license review on images? Is there a way to request a license review on a set of images? I sometimes copy over 100s at a time using Flickr2Commons. Thanks again, John Cummings (talk) 09:07, 13 January 2018 (UTC)

Typically Flickr is automatically reviewed. If you upload images that aren't own work and were taken from a site, just add {{License review}} under the license. Also, I accepted the drone image but I was unable to find any other versions of the other three images with claims that they were ever under CC-BY-SA 2.5/2.0. The closest I got was here, but it doesn't mention what copyright it's under. I suggest contacting them, as Green Giant mentioned. Anarchyte (work | talk) 10:42, 13 January 2018 (UTC)

@Discasto: , the license was clearly visible when I uploaded the image, I think Visual.ly have changed their user interface or something so now it is harder to find. I will have a look around. Can you give me a bit of time to do this? Thanks, John Cummings (talk) 21:27, 14 February 2018 (UTC)
@Discasto: , I worked it out, the CC-BY logo is stamped on the image (bottom left). Thanks, John Cummings (talk) 21:31, 14 February 2018 (UTC)
Sure, no hurries. However, the status of the image keeps on being dubious. The file is claimed to be created by Unesco, but it is hosted in a different provider. It seems as if the license in this site was right some time in the past, but the license is no longer available (even if it was right, I can't see a reason to think Visual.ly can license a Unesco material). Now, a valid license has been watermarked, but not by the owner, but by you. You could understand, the status of the image does not seem solid at all. How do you see it? --Discasto talk 21:44, 14 February 2018 (UTC)

Notification about possible deletion

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Thanks for uploading File:World Press Freedom Day 2017 Poster.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

Hi John. I'm currently generating the lists of files to cross-compare them, I should have the first list available soon for you to check through before I add the categories to the files. One thing I wanted to check - last time we added "{{Wiki Loves Earth 2017|unesco}}" as well as the category, do you want something similar to happen this time too? Thanks. I nominated the CC logo for deletion as it violates their trademark policy. It is the CC logo but uses a different font. This is not allowed by their policy. See https://creativecommons.org/policies/#trademark. I updated the page that you used in on as well. --Martsniez (talk) 09:11, 24 August 2018 (UTC)

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Observing Islamic Veil is the Law on Our Country - Poster in Restaurant of Abbasian Historical House - Kashan - Central Iran (7453884640).jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

After you added the general category to the Flickr-specific one, a lot of files is OVERCATTed. Do you have any objections to the removal of the category from the files which are also in the Flickr category? 1234qwer1234qwer4 (talk) 22:39, 27 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi @1234qwer1234qwer4: , please do not remove Category:Images from Department for International Development, it is used for tracking for reporting. Thanks, John Cummings (talk) 23:27, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
Hello, what about the other files from the Flickr cat not in Category:Images from Department for International Development? Also, I see a “depth” parameter in the tool. Why isn't it used for this category? 1234qwer1234qwer4 (talk) 13:54, 28 February 2020 (UTC)
So its not used from that category because DFID also make other images available which aren't from their Flickr, can you please leave these two categories as they are? If something breaks so they can't measure their impact they are going to be sad and not want to share content on Wikipedia any more. John Cummings (talk) 15:22, 28 February 2020 (UTC)

Is this tool still needed?

Hey John. Hope things are fine on your side. As I received a notification through Phabricator, I wanted to quickly check w/ you whether developing this tool is still relevant? https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T189368

I admit it slipped through the cracks but I have a few bandwidth to work on it if it still makes sense.

@African Hope: , thanks very much, yes things are ok, lockdown week 6 I think? It would be nice to have at some time but no rush, I think the fiddly bit will be removing the credits from within the svg, I don't really know what to do about this. John Cummings (talk) 15:51, 9 April 2020 (UTC)
@John Cummings: , glad to hear you're doing fine. Things are not bad on my side either. As for the credits within the svg, I have found a workaround since SVGs are in some ways text files. Will need your help for some testing in a week or two, once I have made decent progress. Take care in the meantime — African Hope (talk) 16:33, 10 May 2020 (UTC)

Thenoun uploader: minimum viable version is live

Hello John,

I continued to work on the icon uploader ticket. A minimal version is now available here https://thenoun-uploader.toolforge.org

PS: For now, the uploader writes the details of the uploaded icons on test sandbox (User:African_Hope/TheNounProject). Once the tests in production are conclusive, the logic will be replaced with the actual upload process, so as not to disrupt Commons.

If you happen to test it, I'd welcome any feedback.

Pinging Arlo Barnes, as I think he might be interested in testing this icon uploader as well.
