Renaming[edit]

I found more photos that we need to do some name changes upon. These for the most part were from back in 2009 and we my first contributions: I will make a subpage on my user account and then share it with you once I have it complete. My new year has already started with a "bang" so to speak, but that you! I will let you know when I have the name changes ready. Cheers! --Don (talk) 08:49, 30 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Don, in such cases, it is better to follow the instructions here than sending me personal requests. Chances that my actions may be questioned in such bulk moves. Better allowing more eyes (file movers) to ensure what we are doing is correct according to our policies. Jee 09:19, 30 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Ok I can do it by hand, nbd. Another question. I have a entry in the featured photos that have an issue. I created the entry on the 2nd and was sure I had put it on the nomination page: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Featured_picture_candidates/File:J_class_yacht_Ranger_in_Newport_RI_by_D_Ramey_Logan.jpg but I looked yesterday to see if it had comments and it did not show up on the nomination page. I found a even better version loaded it and resubmitted the nomination on the contest page but the dates and time ID are out of sku. Any suggestions? --Don (talk) 00:27, 6 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Delist and replace[edit]

Hi Jee:

See Commons:Featured picture candidates/removal/File:Along the River 7-119-3.jpg.

Ever done a delist and replace? The instructions only talk about delisting, not how to get the replace done. PumpkinSky talk 15:43, 6 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Had done it earlier. But now not enough time to look into this case. Sorry. Jee 03:31, 7 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That's ok. Thanks for responding. PumpkinSky talk 03:43, 7 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Butterflies of Kerala[edit]

Hello Jee. Having recently returned from your beautiful State, I amazed by the time you have invested in Butterflies of Kerala. Brilliant stuff and very useful work. Are you going to apply for a scholarship to go to Wikimania in South Africa? Charles (talk) 14:00, 12 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Charles for your kind words. I'm showing some mood swings and so taking rest. Created a few lists of organisms in Kerala in the mean time. Glad to see they are useful. Will try to create Mammals of Kerala too, soon. My passport expired and no plans to renew it. So no travelling abroad. Thanks again for visiting my page. Jee 07:01, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Well I know you'v had a ghastly time of things, but maybe a trip to Cape Town would rejuvenate you? Best wishes. Charles (talk) 10:08, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Oriens goloides[edit]

Jee, I'm confused over Oriens goloides. ifoundbutterflies and funet have listings for Oriens goloides and Oriens gola. You don't have Oriens gola listed. Some of the images identified as Oriens goloides (the ones with a plain forewing underside) look more like Oriens gola: or is it a male/female; dry season/wet season; age difference?. Thanks, Charles Charles (talk) 17:09, 14 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Oriens gola is only in North-east India. You can check the distribution map of every species in ifoundbutterflies.org. Jee 02:14, 15 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Euchrysops cnejus and Heteropsis adolphei[edit]

Me again. Have I got the id of this blue right, Jee? It seems quite a bit different to your image illustrating the Wikipedia article. But I cannot think what else it could be (see notes on image).

And I'm also confused over this one. The colours and markings don't seem to match othert images I can find. Many thanks Charles (talk) 18:34, 14 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I talked with the experts. Euchrysops cnejus is correct. The other one is not Heteropsis adolphei which is is endemic to high elevation hills of South India. Its a Mycalesis sp. and difficult to say the species. Jee 05:33, 15 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Source found here: http://indiabiodiversity.org/species/show/22049 Leoboudv (talk) 01:57, 28 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Leoboudv. Those images are in species page instead of observation page; that's why {{India Biodiversity Portal}} template not worked. Will be careful in future. Jee 03:16, 28 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Rename please kind sir[edit]

I just loaded a file and all but forgot how to use the interface:(rename:Wheel on the J Class Yacht Topaz.jpg to Wheel on the J Class Yacht Topaz by Don Ramey Logan.jpg) if ya have a sec. Thanks --Don (talk) 07:33, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

GODL India[edit]

Hey,

Thank you for adding GODL licence template to one of uploads(Aditya-L1). I was unaware of its existence and earlier all uploads related to ISRO used to get resized and had other limitations (see IRNSS_series_1.jpg). This would allow us to really free up on use of media from ISRO and other agencies for that matter. Under this could we also upload media that is used inside presentations that ISRO folks give from time to time on various events? These presentations usually in form of PPT or PDF documents, are not generally shared on their official portals unfortunately but can be found occasionally on websites of event hosts and would be great resource for wiki. Ohsin (talk) 08:56, 27 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ohsin, it cover "all shareable non-sensitive data available either in digital or analog forms but generated using public funds by various agencies of the Government of India" ("not sensitive" in nature as mentioned in Right to Information Act 2005, section 8). The template is newly created and I invited copyright experts to thoroughly evaluate it. I believe it is fine and so far not much concerns raised. For the time being, please stick with uploads that are available online in a .gov.in or .nic.in. Jee 09:52, 27 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Caprona ransonnetii[edit]

Hi Jkadavoor, when you do this kind of change, please do it completely. Here, you still need to correct the name in the taxonavigation template, and move the subcategories too. Moreover, why did you do this ? Thank you in advance for correcting. --LamBoet (talk) 07:02, 30 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi LamBoet, hope everything is fine now. Thanks! Jee 08:29, 30 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you; just one remark for next time: when the new category does not exist yet, it is best to rename the category with the "move" tool. The final result is the same, but this way the edit history is preserved, and the page automatically stays on other people's watchlists. --LamBoet (talk) 15:42, 30 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Chilades[edit]

You asked a question about two species of Chilades; contracta and parrhasius. These were kept as separate species, and placed in different species groups, by Bálint, Z. & Johnson, K., 1997. Follow the link to the pdf from the WS Chilades contracta page and look at pages 13,14 of the reference. ACCassidy (talk) 21:11, 21 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks ACCassidy for the info. Jee 02:27, 22 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Cover Photo[edit]

Hey Jee, so the airport photo of mine does not have attribution. It was on the front of EN on the 21st, with a proper name attribution, but on Commons it just has a link to the EN page the picture is featured upon and its on the commons cover today. I asked Steinsplitter as it seems he runs the Main page contents but thought I would reach out to you and see if you would mind posting attribution. Thanks. --Don (talk) 21:08, 29 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Notification about possible deletion[edit]

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Files from Ministry of external affairs Flickr Acoount[edit]

Hi @Jkadavoor: there are more than 30,000+ files in MEA flickr stream but all of them are copyrighted which is against GODL-India, is there is any possible way to transfer these files to commons [1] Perumalism (talk) 15:56, 20 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Perumalism: The banner there says "all photographs are free to use". You may ask them through Flickr mail to change the license by mentioning GODL in the profile page. I randomly checked some images; most of them seem copied from pib.nic.in If true, we can find better copies there. Jee 16:08, 20 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I have mailed them couple of times but no response from them, if the files are available in pib.nic.in okay then. Hope near-future someone would develop a bot for mass transfer of files from pib.nic.in Perumalism (talk) 16:37, 20 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Indian coast guard[edit]

Hi, I would like confirmation that these are OK:

Thanks, Yann (talk) 14:10, 22 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

OK, thanks. It could theoretically be that the Indian coast guard is not the source. I doubt that the first image is own work. I would just like to be sure that my reviews are correct, and I am fine with whatever consensus we have about these cases.
What about images which are obviously from the Indian government, but we don't have the source (e.g. File:MI-35.JPG and File:SU-30.jpg)? Is it OK to put them in a category Category:Images from the Indian government with broken source and to forget about the review? Regards, Yann (talk) 16:02, 22 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The problem with IAF is that they do not keep old photos in ther gallery. So we can't find the source of old uploads. I think they can be kept in that special category and we can review future uploads. Jee 16:14, 22 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

GODL-India[edit]

Hi, When I review the source, I check that there isn't a higher resolution available. If there is one, I upload it over the file (File:Rajiv Gauba, IAS with Rajnath Singh, Kiren Rijju and Rajiv Mehrishi, IAS.jpg). We need a way to check that. What do you think? Regards, Yann (talk) 13:23, 23 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

And here, it is the wrong source. Yann (talk) 13:25, 23 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Oops; sorry, don't know how I missed it. Regarding higher resolution, it is possible to upload one by one while we review them. Perumalism's comment above is also interesting. We may ask at COM:BATCH to upload contents from PIB using script. Jee 13:37, 23 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Money of India[edit]

Hi Jee, Do you think we can now undelete Commons:Deletion requests/Money of India2 and Commons:Deletion requests/Money of India. If {{GODL-India}} applies to all works made by the Indian government, it also should apply to banknotes, isn't? Regards, Yann (talk) 16:52, 25 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Yann, {{GODL-India}} is applicable to works by RBI too; but we should be careful as chances that some existing laws may prevent the reproduction. IPC 489E prohibits "making or using documents resembling currency-notes or bank-notes". I don't know how much it is applicable to photos and scans. Jee 02:23, 26 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Thanks for your answer. I would interpret that as "printed documents". A picture isn't a document resembling a banknote. Regards, Yann (talk) 09:12, 26 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
May be; but not sure. Jee 10:25, 26 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Crowdfunding Campaign for a new computer for User:Jkadavoor[edit]

I'm starting this thread here, but it might be moved to some other page later. Anyway, for most of the FPC regulars, Jee and his work needs no introduction. Ever since he got his good camera equipment, he has been dazzling us with his photos of butterflies, moths, caterpillars and bugs. This has now unfortunately come to a bit of a halt since he no longer has access to a good computer on which to process his photos. He is now editing via an old (XP) computer with not enough capacity for hi-res photos and sometimes even on his mobile due to constant breaks in the power distribution. Some users here have also been kind enough to edit his raw files and they have so far resulted in QIs, VIs and FPs. I know that the Wikimedia foundation sometimes contributes with computers and other equipment for valued users, but that takes time, a lot of paperwork and it often comes with some sort of conditions. I think that we, Jee's friends here on Commons, could pool our resources and get this done quicker and better.

The previous crowdfunding we did here for Jee went through Indiegogo. Another campaign we did here was for The Photographer through Generosity. Generosity, had better contitions, but it has now beem merged into Gofundme which is a part of Indiegogo. Unfortunately, that branch does not list India among the countries it supports, so it looks like we should go with the normal Indiegogo. One advantage with using the same platform is that we can use the first campaign as a template when we set up this one and also refer back to that first campaign and its very successful result.

A new reasonably good laptop costs about 40,000-50,000 INR (USD 585-730) in India. Indiegogo also charges a fee of 5% and the credit card company 3%+$0.30/per donation. There is also a transfer fee of $25. To cover all of this we would need to raise about USD 830.

I'm not that familiar with what programs for raw processing there are for free, so we might consider an Adobe license (PS and LR) as a second goal.

So, what do you say, shall we get started? Suggestions and ideas are very welcome. --Cart (talk) 19:16, 17 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Let's get this started. I'm in. --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 20:02, 17 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Seems like several good-causes fundraising sites have merged into GoFundMe, and the latter only supports a limited number of countries. However, this comment says "you may ask a friend or family member who is a citizen of one of the supported countries to start a GoFundMe campaign on your behalf." GoFundMe has 0% platform fees only in even fewer countries; some still have a 5% fee. In addition, if donors pay by credit card, there may be a foreign-currency transaction charge, depending on your card or bank. I know in the UK there are a few cards that charge no fee (I have one), but many charge up to 3%. Not sure what the deal is with US and EU credit cards -- would like to hear from others about that. I believe the currency exchange rate offered by credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Amex) is considered to be as good as it gets, so it is just the fee to worry about. Perhaps if most donors are in the Euro, it would be slightly better to host the fundraiser in a Euro country that has 0% platform fees.
So I think we can avoid the Indiegogo 5% platform fee. I would be happy to setup the campaign if we think having the campaign in GBP will not be an issue, and Jee trusts me not to run away with the money! GBP also has some Brexit turbulence, but I guess nobody can predict which country might do stupid things. Perhaps someone in the US, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands or Spain could offer a better hosting country/currency? -- Colin (talk) 07:48, 18 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Cart, Frank and Colin. Feel free to use any project convinent to you and the donors. I have no problem in Colin or Cart host it on behalf of me. Hope to be back from hospital soon. (From mobile) Jee 14:26, 19 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
My gut feeling is that any international fundraiser would be best conducted from the UK where Colin is based. I think the banks there have better connections to banks in India than Swedish banks. So if you Colin are prepared to host this, I have no problem with that. Just tell us what help you need. --Cart (talk) 14:48, 19 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Help needed on Flickr[edit]

Hello.
Some months ago we collaborated on the {{GODL-India}} template. May you now help me a bit with Flickr? I need to contact certain Flickr user – but haven’t an account myself, don’t usually register on a site having no intention to contribute, and in any case a message from an established Flickr account will be more credible. Could you pass an information to that user on my behalf? Incnis Mrsi (talk) 15:39, 18 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

PIB naming convention[edit]

If you find a file name in pmindia.gov.in of the format sYYYYMMDDxxxxx.jpg or lYYYYMMDDxxxxx.jpg (for example http://www.pmindia.gov.in/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/s2016050182127.jpg), the image is also published at PIB. The last 5-6 digits form the PIB photo ID and you can append the the ID at the end of the URL http://pib.nic.in/newsite/photo.aspx?photoid= to get to the picture. For the example that I gave before, the PIB photo ID is 82127 and the URL is http://pib.nic.in/newsite/photo.aspx?photoid=82127. Sometimes pmindia.gov.in and the Flickr stream have lower resolution images, but PIB will always have the full resolution image. —Gazoth (talk) 04:28, 22 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Chilades contracta[edit]

Only a formal, authoritative publication synonymising parrhasius with contracta would be reason to change the status here. If you know of such an academic report, then please quote it and update the pages. Because something is not mentioned in new books does not mean it no longer remains valid. ACCassidy (talk) 08:28, 13 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi ACCassidy, please check the links in Luthrodes contracta (Butler, 1880). Stempffer, 1967 The genera of the African Lycaenidae (Lepidoptera: Rhopalocera) Bull. Br. Mus. nat. Hist. (Ent) Suppl. 10 : 248 says Luthrodes contracta (Butler, 1880) is a synonym of Chilades parrhasius (Fabricius, 1793). Jee 14:40, 17 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
