Tip: Categorizing images[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 11:54, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

File:Jimmy_Walter.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

Sorry, I am lost as to what to do. The image parody of Biden's re-election campaign was supposed to be under Biden's images. Perhaps that is not allowed.
The images of myself are for the article on me in the regular wikipedia. Since they will not allow me to edit that page, I have no way to actually put them there.
At any rate, I put all these images in the public domain. You have them. Delete or use them as you will. I get no profit or advantage from any of this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jimmywalter (talk • contribs) 04:01, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
- There are two issues:
- (This comment assumes that Commons User:Jimmywalter is in fact Jimmy Walter, which is unproven, but given your comment, "they will not allow me to edit," seems likely).
- You claim that the Biden poster is "own work". If it is a genuine political campaign poster, and not your own work, then it can probably remain here. If it is your own work, then it may be out of scope, because we don't host personal artwork. Others may think that it is in scope, because you are a significant political figure. The DR will decide.
- As for the three images of Jimmy Walter, the issue is copyright. You claimed that these are "own work", but unless you used a self-timer, you did not take the photos yourself. They are not, therefore, in fact, "own work", but the work of an unnamed photographer (or two) who probably holds the copyright to them. In order to keep them we need, at a bare minimum, more information about the circumstances of their creation. We will probably need a license from the photographer using the procedure at Commons:OTRS.
- If we resolve the copyright question, I will add your choice of one of the three images to the WP:EN article. Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 10:45, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
How can I prove that I am Jimmy Walter? If you look at my sites, www.walden3.org, reopen911.org, and jimmywalter.com, you will find my email addresses, jwalter@walden3.org, jwalter@reopen911.org, and jimmy@jimmywalter.com. You will also see my picture on them, which corresponds to the images of me I uploaded.
The Bilden poster is definitely my own work. I created it to look like his. I did not use his work or any political poster of his.
You are correct, the other pictures were not taken by me, but by a photographer I paid to do so. I own the copyright, which was not an option, so I choose the one that I thought most closely fit. They were taken 7 years ago.
Thanks for your time and attention to this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jimmywalter (talk • contribs) 11:25, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
- Unless you want to add anything at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Jimmy Walter.jpg, I think that will close as keep. Please let us know which of the three images you want on Jimmy Walter. Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 11:48, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
And ---- Please sign your posts on talk pages, user talk pages, deletion requests, and noticeboards. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and the date will then automatically be added along with a timestamp when you save your comment. Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion). Thank you. Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 11:48, 30 July 2011 (UTC) The first image is fine by me for that page. It is the one I use the most. I have other images such as the destruction of my car window that the Santa Barbara police and FBI refused to investigate, pictures of me and my car protesting, and pictures of myself and others at events I sponsored around the world. Should I upload them or not?Jimmywalter (talk) 14:42, 30 July 2011 (UTC)

Hi there. I am Jimmy Walter. It is my picture. I am a political figure in the history of the fight against the entry into the Iraq War based on lies. I ran full page ads in the NY Times and other newspapers across the US telling everone that Powell lied on the day that the UN Vote was to take place.
I am also a significant figure in the 9/11 truth movement.
Do what you will.
The T-shirt is the subject of a wikipedia page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guiles_v._Marineau

File:Newspaper Ad for Chickenhawk T-shirts and patches created by Jimmy Walter.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

File tagging File:Newspaper Ad for Chickenhawk T-shirts and patches created by Jimmy Walter.jpg[edit]
This media was probably deleted.

Thanks for uploading File:Newspaper Ad for Chickenhawk T-shirts and patches created by Jimmy Walter.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Newspaper Ad for Chickenhawk T-shirts and patches created by Jimmy Walter.jpg]] ) and the above demanded information in your request. |
